1 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 15, 2017 Readings: Is 49:3,5-6; 1 Cor 1:1-3; Jn 1:29-34 THE DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear friends, Having just celebrated the birth of Jesus, we now enter into the period of His public ministry and its repercussions for all of human kind. There s little, if any, information in the Gospel about the period of Jesus infancy to His adulthood. The evangelists chose to relate only what they believed to be the most important aspects of Jesus life, i.e., those that were necessary for believing. During this month we ve read of the Epiphany of Jesus and His anointing by God at His baptism. These and the remaining Gospels define the person and mission of Jesus set against the backdrop of Israel s hopes and dreams. At His epiphany and baptism Jesus is portrayed as the one through whom all the peoples of the earth would know the saving power of God. He is shown to be God s promised Son and Servant, anointed and sent forth on a universal mission. When Jesus appeared, ready to embrace the role of servant, He announced His purpose plainly and openly: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and proclaim a year acceptable to God. There we have it from the outset the person of Jesus identified and His mission made clear. For the balance of the year, the Gospels will expand on these facts so that we might know and accept that our own identity and mission should be in harmony with that of Jesus, as individuals and as church. At 6:15pm children will be released to attend their age specific classes and the adults will attend their adult group sessions from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. 4 Annual Clergy Convocation The annual week of formation and prayer for all priests and deacons of our diocese will be held January in Visalia. There will be Communion Services here Tuesday though Friday of that week, January There will be NO Reconciliation hour on Tuesday, January 24 and no evening Mass on Wednesday, January 25. Looking for a Sound Engineer We need volunteers. There is a need at the Newman Center to create a new ministry to partner with the Liturgical and Music Ministries to manage the sound requirements at each liturgical service. Duties include managing the sound levels of all liturgical entities (readers, musicians, deacon, and priest) to make for a more successful liturgical experience for the community. The goal is to minimize sound system feedback and successfully balance the sound at each liturgy. Training will be provided. Some computer / technical experience is preferred. Holy Cross Center Thank You The Women s Guild would like to extend a thank you to the members of our parish, Tom Ferdinandi Jr. and Carlo DiCicco, for their generous donations to help with the Christmas gifts and food for the displaced women that Holy Cross Center administers to. The event was a success and Sister Mary Clennon asked that I extend their gratitude and appreciation to all those who helped to make another person s Christmas a little brighter. Altar Servers As president of the Women s Guild I want to personally thank our ladies for their generosity in recognizing our altar servers this holiday season. First Eucharist Banners There are several banners from last year s First Communion celebration left in our office. Please pick up your child s banner if you wish to keep it as a remembrance of the celebration. Mardi Gras Ticket Sales Mardi Gras will be held on Saturday, February 11. Ticket sales will begin the weekend of January in the hallway after all Masses. They can also be purchased at the office during the week. Tickets will cost $60 per person. There are tables of eight, so start gathering your friends! Memorial Garden Please stop by the Memorial Garden to look at our latest addition of memorial plaques on our benches. It is not too late to order a brick! Brick orders can be made at the front desk or online: newmancenter. Mardi Gras Dessert Silent Auction We are looking for gourmet desserts, each to delight a table of 8. Presentation counts. Display containers are to be included in the donation. Please contact the parish office by Monday, February 6 at or sign up at the ticket sales table after Masses to let us know you would like to donate a dessert. Ideas: individual desserts for eight, tarts, mousse, pastries, eclairs, pies, specialty cakes, fancy brownies or cupcakes. Remember that Mardi Gras is our theme so be creative. Refrigeration for your dessert will be available if necessary. Please bring desserts by noon on Saturday, February 11. Even if you are unable to attend Mardi Gras, this is a great way to be involved in this great fundraiser. Lydia s House Theme for 2017 The Heart of a Woman Lydia s House will meet from 9:00am until noon on Saturday, January 21 in the Cafeteria. The title of the program is Journey of Faith. All women are invited. Bring a goodie plate or fruit to share. Remember your coffee / tea cup. 5 Second Collection This Weekend During this month of January our parishes are asked to take a special second collection to support the formation of our seminarians. The average cost of a year of formation is $50,000. At present we have 23 men in formation for the priesthood in our diocese. I want to thank you in advance for any gift that you can give to support our future priests. In addition to financial help your spiritual support is crucial. Your prayers for those who are in seminary and those who are discerning a possible call to serve is a source of strength and encouragement. For more information call Carol at David Parkes - A Night of Healing The Holy Spirit Healing Prayer Ministry would like to invite you to A Night of Healing with Speaker/International Recording Artist David Parkes. It will be held on Thursday, January 12 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 355 E. Champlain Dr. The event begins at 6:30pm with worship music and David will speak at 7:00pm. David Parkes suffered from Crohn s Disease, unable to be cured by the medical profession. His journey led him to Medjugorje where he experienced God s love and healing. Through that experience he promised Our Lady that he would create pro-life music. He since has recorded many songs and is known for the song Let me Live. OLV 9 th Annual Crab Feed Our Lady of Victory will hold its annual crab feed on January 28. Join us at Holy Spirit Church in Logan Hall for all you can eat salad, pasta, and crab. Living Jesus: Learning the Heart of the Gospel Join John Prandini in this spiritual book study to encounter and come to know Jesus in a personal and powerful way as a living presence in your life. A Stephen Ministry Story Stephen Ministry has over 40 trained ministers to be there for men and women who need someone to talk to. Going into the New Year, there are times where added burdens are placed on many of us. Sometimes things get so tough that it seems hopeless. Stephen Ministry offers a person to meet with you to share your burdens. Anything shared is held in strict confidence. The purpose of the ministry is for men and women to unload their problems to a caring minister. The minister will pray with you and bring to you the message of God s hope. A number of years ago, a Stephen Minister met with a young man who had a problem with anger. Over the course of meetings, which lasted over a year, his anger was replaced by hope and love. The Stephen Minister is not a problem solver. Our purpose is to bring God s love to the person in need, and to assure the care receiver that he or she is not alone. God has not forgotten you. Stephen Ministers are here to provide you a person to share your worries with, to provide you with support and to remind you of God s love. 6 St. Paul Catholic Newman Center Mardi Gras 2017 Treasures of the Past This year the Mardi Gras committee has decided to add a new section to the silent auction called Treasures of the Past. We are only able to accept a limited number of donations due to limited space. All donations need to be clean and in working order if applicable. Any item donated should be in like new or gently used condition. Listed below are ideas for this section of the silent auction but they are not limited to only these suggestions: - First edition or autographed books - Vintage glassware (i.e., wine goblets, vases, perfume bottles, decorative bowls, candy dishes, etc.) - Vintage or antique jewelry - Collectible figurines (i.e., Swarovski crystal, Disney, Hummel, Llardo, NAO, Capodimonte porcelain, etc.) - Antique cookie jars - Decorative tea pots and/or sets - Coffee Grinders - Mantel clocks - Antique mounted guns, knives, swords, etc. - Coin collections Please ensure that your donation is received by the front office no later than Monday, February 6 th.
