1 Fourth Sunday of Easter Year B April 22, 2018 Readings: ACTS 4:8-12; 1 JN 3:1-2; JN 10:11-1 Readings on p THE DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear Sisters and Brothers, The Church has always promoted the symbol of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. In the course of church history a dramatic change took place in how Christians understood themselves and their place in the Church. Over time, the Shepherd no longer held a lamb on His shoulder, but a miniature Church building cradled in His hands. This symbol conveyed the impression that Jesus was backing the institution of the Church rather than the individual Christian. This theme of Church teaching focused on the role of laity in the church sheep that listened, obeyed, and followed the leadership of the clergy. The laity began to understand themselves more and more as sheep needing to be cared for by their clerical leaders rather than having duties of their own to carry on the work of Jesus. They were to be serviced by the clergy rather than have service responsibilities of their own. As a result of being passive and obedient to the clergy, the Church may have been efficient, but it came at a price. Average Christians never matured in their faith. They never understood themselves as having a mission of carrying on as co-workers in God s Kingdom. The Protestant Reformation and the Second Vatican Council have had a tremendous impact on the progressive evolution of Christianity because they did something significant they reformed the symbol. The focus is again on the Shepherd supporting and prodding us in our personal responsibilities for owning our faith and building the Kingdom of God. What this means is that you, the laity, are encouraged to stop acting like sheep and assume a more proactive role in the life of the Church to act like adults, with an adult faith, mature morals, and responsibility for the development of our consciences. Our baptism needs to be taken seriously. It is more than a social ritual and receiving a Christian name. It is a commission for ministry. Every Christian is called to ministry, be it in the life of the Church, one s parish, secular community, or one s family. The image of the Good Shepherd is still valid, but the Shepherd doesn t ask us to be dependent like sheep, but rather energizes us to fulfill our personal destinies to be of service. 2 Answering a Call to Service I recently led Faith, Family & Friends discussions about Jesus as a gatherer of diverse people, as a leader for his earthly life and beyond and as a reconciler who set the standard for healing divisions among us even today. It was a privilege and spiritually exhilarating to chat with parishioners open to new thinking about familiar Scripture. I learned more than I taught. I relish learning more about my Faith, especially the history of it. I m comfortable sharing thoughts with our Men s Group on Tuesday (weekly) and Saturday (monthly) led by Director of Ministries John Prandini. (I d invite more men on Saturdays, but that could mean less breakfast for me.) I was reluctant when John invited me to lead discussions for Faith, Family & Friends. I m more about suggesting ministry changes, additions and deletions, than actually participating. I didn t have a good excuse not to, and I value John s commitment to grow and nurture our community. Volunteering through the years at the Newman Center has given me more than I ve given back. This was an opportunity to contribute a little, but it got me thinking about our ministry programs. It s easy to be part of the add, subtract and refurbish ministries gang, and John actively seeks our input about how to serve the varied needs of our diverse community. It s not as easy, though, for John, alone, to bring a good ministry idea to life. We can t just illuminate some Batman-like JP beacon in the sky and expect him to rocket to the Newman Center every time we want a new ministry. Because we don t have enough priests and deacons, we lay Catholics have taken on greater roles in parish worship and administration. We need to do the same with highly focused ministries that help sustain and grow our parish family. We re all busy as students, parents, business people, educators and even retirees. Surely, though, our Newman Community is worth an investment of just a little more time and talent in ministries that help us be better engaged in our faith, our parish and in service to our brothers and sisters beyond our campus. After my recent experience, I can attest to the personal and spiritual dividends, too. -Lanny Larson Second Collection Next Weekend Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Catholic Professional & Business Club The Catholic Professional & Business Club (CP&BC) of the Fresno Diocese will be conducting a membership drive this Sunday after the morning Masses. Our club is a great opportunity to share our faith, network and deepen our relationship with God as we listen to inspiring speakers that will motivate and encourage us to live an exemplary Catholic life style. The group meets monthly to network and hear engaging speakers from throughout the country. Membership dues are $45 a year. James Martin. The book and article address the need to create a dialogue between the LGBT community and the Catholic Church in a reciprocal relationship of respect, compassion and sensitivity. The book will be available for purchase, but participants will be given copies of Fr. Martin s America Magazine article which includes the points made in his book. The weekly sessions sponsored by the Newman Center s LGBTQ Catholic Ministry will be held on Thursday evenings, April 26, May 3 & 10, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in Cardinal Newman Hall 101.

3 Faith, Family & Friends "Growing as a Faith Family" This Tuesday, April 24 is Community Meal Night at Faith, Family & Friends, our parish religious education and faith formation program, for EVERYONE! Registered or not! Please join us from 5:30pm to 6:00pm in Cardinal Newman Hall to share a community meal of pasta and salad provided by Carlo DiCicco and Family with family and friends followed by our opening program at 6:00pm. At 6:15pm the children will leave to attend their age specific classes while the adults will gather in CNH to attend an All Adult group meeting to evaluate the year's events and classes, and to share ideas for topics and improvements to enliven and revitalize our Faith, Family & Friends experience.
