1 Third Sunday of Lent Year B March 4, 2018 Readings: EX 20:1-17; 1 COR 1:22-25; JN 2:13-25 Readings on p THE DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear Sisters and Brothers, Today s first reading from Exodus reads, You shall not have other gods besides me. THOU SHALT NOT. For some people, unfortunately, these three words sum up their entire experience of organized religion. Life in the church, for such people, is all about what you can t do, what s wrong with the world, or what s sinful in themselves. In such a worldview, it seems that there s a devil behind every tree and under every rock. Thou shalt not becomes a way of life when somebody breaks the rules. No wonder, with such a negative message going around, that people choose to stop going to church! In this case, perhaps losing your religion could mean saving your soul, because, of course, the good news of Christianity is not the bad news of condemnation and despair. God can t be both the Giant of No and the Lord of Yes. In a way, the negative image of a punitive God is a false god that we have sometimes put before the Lord. We may have carved an idol out of the jealous God who inflicts punishment on wickedness (Exod 20:5) and refused to acknowledge also the God who delivers mercy unto thousands (Exod 20:6). Clearly the Bible contains strong language about what we must not do. There ARE moral commands against causing harm to others or denying the authority of God. But it s important to remember that when Jesus was asked about the commandments of God, the one he raised to First place was not a No but a Yes. Love God, and Love your neighbor. If we set our sights on love, then love and not fear will define our journey. Peace and Love, Deacon John

2 Memorial Garden Dedication Our Memorial Garden Dedication is today immediately following the 11:00am Mass. We are still taking orders to complete the remainder of our garden. There are more bricks available for purchase. The cost is $100 per brick. Order forms are available at the front desk and on the other side of this week s insert. Lenten Reconciliation Service Our Lenten Reconciliation Service is this Wednesday, March 7 at 6:30pm in the Chapel. We will have multiple priests available to hear confessions. Second Collection Next Weekend Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection (CRSC). Funds from this collection help provide food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and bring Christ s love and mercy to all people here at home and abroad. Next week, please give generously to the CRSC, and help Jesus in disguise. Learn more about the collection at catholic-relief. College Retreat Next Weekend The college students will be on their Spring Retreat next weekend. Please pray for them as they take a break from school and work to enjoy time with God and friends. Lenten Christian Meditation Join us on Fridays during Lent to learn and experience the ancient practice of Christian Meditation. We meet in the Library from 5:45pm to 6:30pm prior to Stations of the Cross. Faith, Family & Friends "Growing as a Faith Family" This Tuesday, March 6 please join us from 5:30pm to 6:00pm in Cardinal Newman Hall to share your pre-ordered pizza or your own food with family and friends followed by the our opening program at 6:00pm. At 6:15pm the children will leave to attend their age specific classes while the adults will gather in CNH to attend one of the following programs of their choice: Family Life Topic: Communicating Affection in Words and Actions. Catholic Faith Topic: The Art of Accompaniment. Everyone is invited to join us at FF&F. It is a great way to share and grow in your faith and meet other members of our parish. Please join us! College Corner Wednesday Night Dinner This week we will be joining the parish Reconciliation service. We will eat dinner EARLY at 6:00pm followed by the service at 6:30pm. See you there! Spring Retreat Take a weekend away to grow closer to God and friends. Join us for our spring retreat next weekend March Retreat waivers are on the website on the Campus Ministry page. Alternative Spring Break We will have an in-town mission trip this spring break. Spend part of your break with us and give back to the community. Applications are coming soon. Grief Support The Grief Support Group is a resource for learning how to embrace and work through the loss of a loved one. We meet in the Community Room on Mondays at 7:00pm now through March 19. Scriptural Rosary Lent is an extraordinary time to review and improve your prayer life and devotions. Please join us on Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm in the Community Room for a devotional scriptural rosary to Our Blessed Mother, and pray for your intentions and those of your fellow parishioners. Front Desk Volunteer Needed We are in need of a front desk volunteer. We need help on Monday mornings from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Duties include greeting people at the front door, answering telephones, and helping with various projects. Some computer experience is preferred. 3 Our Lenten Walk Together The Lenten Altar Setting: Each week, a new symbol is added to the altar steps that corresponds to the Sunday gospel reading for the week. Ash Wednesday is represented by a cross and ashes. The First Sunday of Lent is represented by a dove to symbolize the Spirit walking with us. The Second Sunday of Lent is represented by a dazzling white cloth to symbolize the Transfiguration. Third Sunday of Lent: Our gospel tells us that Jesus trashes the tables of the money changers in the temple who are "making my Father's house a marketplace". Our symbol this week is thirty silver coins. The coins remind us that conflict and opposition will always be part of the Church's prophetic ministry against injustice, yet the struggle is sustained by the power of the risen Christ. We are called To Walk Together this week respecting all people and the rights of our neighbor. Men's Breakfast Group We meet this Saturday, March 10 from 7:30am to 9:00am in the Cafeteria. Join with other men of the parish to share a delicious breakfast, good conversation, and our collective spiritual wisdom as we support each other on our spiritual journeys. March is Women's Her-Story Month The Newman Center is hosting the program, "Harnessing Inner Power for Healing & Healthy Living," on March 18 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm in Cardinal Newman Hall. Come and listen, learn and be inspired by the lived experience of three women: a Chicana leader from Visalia, a Hmong professional, and a Fiji-Indian all crossing cultural boundaries. The program is free and is facilitated by Veena Kapoor. Rising Star Congratulations to Memorial junior, Jake Negrete who has been invited to represent the Eagle Impact Rugby Academy (EIRA), a USA Rugby Development Program for the best young players in the country. Negrete is ranked #2 in the nation at the fly half position and is in the pool for being All-American. He has been contacted by UC Berkley, Brown, St. Mary's and the University of Arizona who have been impressed by his overachieving ways, not only on the field, but also in the classroom. If you are not registered, you can register online by finding our link on our website, or enter the church phone number at the register: The Heart of Reality The coincidence of Valentine s Day and Ash Wednesday falling on February 14 suggests a reflection on the heart as a symbol. Valentine s is an occasion for an exchange of hearts. That Wednesday begins a season of heartsearching: Create in me a clean heart. The heart symbolizes what is deepest, most whole, most real. Although our technological age has brought us great benefits, ours is also a time of instant answers, speedy gratification, and overhyped conveniences. As a result, we skate on the surface of reality, missing personal encounters and true depth. We become dependent on Google, Wikipedia, Facebook, or Twitter for information, facts mostly based on what many people think, rather than on the process of personal experience. T.S. Eliot asked Where is the knowledge that is lost in information? Where is the wisdom that is lost in knowledge? We end up living in our heads or perhaps in other people s heads instead of processing experience ourselves. We need to live within the stillness necessary for the awareness of the contemplative vision. It has been said that the heart crosses the abyss that the mind creates, the abyss being the great illusion that we are separated from others, the world, and God. It is the heart that says yes to belonging, to connection to the cosmos, to be attuned to the harmony of the Real.
