1 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B July 29, 2018 Readings: 2 KGS 4:42-44; EPH 4:1-6; JN 6:1-15 Readings on p.1243 Moving from Los Angeles to Fresno was a huge change for me. I had a new living situation, in a new town, in a new diocese, and for the first time in my adult life, I was not working for a parish. This was the greatest challenge, as I had to find a home parish. For about a year I went to different parishes, some in my neighborhood, some around different parts of the diocese. But it wasn t until I came to St. Paul Newman Catholic Center that I was home. The strongest element leading to my choice was invitation and welcome. I was invited to come and consider working with music ministry by Edgar Guzman, who I met at a diocesan event. Then I was invited to be a part of the RCIA team by Charles Arokiasamy. But one of the nicest things was that there were always people at the doors when I walked in for Mass, welcoming me with a smile and a cheery Good Morning! Welcome and acceptance is a big part of what makes us a community. As Church, it should be our primary way of evangelizing, seeing Christ s face in everyone we meet, and a desire to make them feel at home. This weekend, we have an opportunity to do just that as we celebrate several people entering into the Catechumenate, to prepare to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church. The text of the RCIA Rite book tells us that as assembly, we are all considered to be part of the RCIA team, and are all responsible to welcome and accept them into the community, surrounding them with our prayers and support. If you get to meet any of our Catechumens, reach out and welcome them. For more information about how to help our Catechumens, contact the parish office and ask to be put in touch with an RCIA team member. Let s work together to welcome them to our family! Rosie Hernandez Director of Music Ministry RCIA Team Member
2 Mission Priest Next weekend, August 4 and 5 we will be having a Mission Priest celebrate Mass with us. There will be a second collection next weekend as well. Adult Confirmation Classes Our Adult Sacramental Preparation program prepares baptized Catholics for the sacraments of Confirmation, Eucharist (First Communion), and Reconciliation. Classes beginning Monday, September 10, at 6:30pm and run through January 28, Deacon Bill Lucido will be journeying with the class during this preparation. Registration forms can be found on our website or at the front desk. For more information contact Deacon Bill at , by bill@csufnewman.com. Changes in Mass Times Coming Beginning the weekend of September 8-9, there will be changes to our Sunday morning Mass schedule. Masses will begin at 7:30am, 9:30am, and 11:30am. The changes are being made to accommodate those parishioners who have the need to speak to Father, Deacon Bill, or me between masses. There are many instances when it is difficult to address parishioner needs and get ready for the next Mass. Baptisms and Anointings need prep time and the extra time allows us to care for the pastoral needs of everyone. An added benefit will be the parking lot crunch that takes place between the 7:30am and 9:00am Masses will be eliminated. Thank you for your understanding and openness to change. Peace, Deacon John LGBTQ Catholic Ministry If you are a member of the LGBTQ community, and would like to be in a leadership position in this important ministry here at the Newman Center, please contact John Prandini at prandinij@csufnewman.com. Those interested will be invited to begin planning in August for the upcoming academic year. CD To Benefit Families on the Border Join St. Paul Catholic Newman Center Choirs in supporting our refugee children and families at the border! Recorded by a group of talented parish musicians, this CD contains inspirational pieces for prayer and reflection. All proceeds from this CD will be donated to Catholic Relief Services, to help support our refugee children and families at the border. Suggested donation is $5 per CD. Thank you for considering a donation to this worthy cause! For more information, contact Rosie Hernandez at rosie@csufnewman.com. Paul Turner The Rosary is a prayer based on the repetition of the Lord s Prayer, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. During its recitation the believer reflects upon the birth, life, death, and glory of Jesus Christ and the role of Mary. A chain of beads resembling a garland of roses gave the rosary its name. The beads are not essential to the prayer, but they help count through 50 Hail Marys (five decades). The recitation of the traditional 15 decades permitted unlettered Christians to imitate more simply the monastic practice of reciting all 150 psalms in weekly prayer. In addition to meditation, the rosary leads to petition. It implores Mary s intercession in bringing our prayers to God. As she won the cooperation of Jesus at the wedding feast at Cana, so we ask her to bring our needs to the Holy One of God. The precise origins of the rosary are obscure, but it probably formed in imitation of meditative practices of Islam and after the Christian desire for prayer in a language more easily understood than the Latin of the Mass. Its popularity increased after the 15th century due to zealous encouragement for the followers of St. Dominic, who believed our Lady had miraculously given the rosary to him. Because believers who attended Mass at the time had less to say, do, or see compared with today, the recitation of the rosary during Mass became a popular Catholic devotion much encouraged by religious educators. The popes of the church have continually cultivated the rosary as part of the faithful s private devotion and especially in family prayer. Many Catholics recite it privately or in groups before Mass. The liturgy for the dead calls for a vigil service of Scripture readings on the night before the funeral, but many parishes replace it with the rosary, even though the rubrics make no such provision. Catholics may observe some people praying the Rosary during Mass. This was an honored custom for many centuries. Today we are encouraged to participate in the Mass and to pray the rosary apart from the Eucharist. Father Paul Turner is the pastor of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City, Missouri. He is also the Director of Divine Worship of the Diocese.
