1 The Most Holy Trinity Year B May 27, 2018 Readings: DT 4:32-34, 39-40; ROM 8:14-17; MT 28:16-20 Readings on p THE DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear Sisters and Brothers, I dread thinking about preparing the homily for this Sunday s solemnity of The Most Holy Trinity because it s so easy to get caught up in trying to explain either a mathematical puzzle or a complex theological mystery. The problem here is not so much the content of the homily, but the intent. The mystery of it is that no matter how much we try to describe what the Trinity is, we could never fully communicate the depth of its meaning because the Trinity is ultimately about relationship. Like any relationship with a loved one, we can only understand it fully by entering into it with our hearts. I ve escaped the responsibility of preaching this homily, but I m leaving you with an explanation from a liturgical handbook. When we make the sign of the cross on our bodies, we recall that everything we do begins and ends with God. We mark ourselves with a sign that identifies who we are and whose we are. It is a sign that physically encompasses our entire being, reminding us that we are drawn into the life and love of the Trinity, a life-giving and self-sacrificing relationship between Father and Son in the love of the Spirit. The sign of the cross consecrates and gives purpose to anyone and anything we bless with that sign, for the work of the Trinity is to bring blessing to all creation; and all creation is made for being in relationship with the Creator. We first learn the significance of this sign (and thus the meaning of the Trinity) usually from our parents or family and friends who have shared with us their faith. Here, then, we learn that being in a loving relationship with God is not an abstract idea but is a relationship we first encounter through the love of another person for us. By loving others, we embody and deepen our understanding of the meaning of the Trinity. Peace and love, Deacon John

Fair Trade Coffee Sales Fair Trade Sales will be held this weekend after the Saturday evening Mass and the Sunday morning Masses. We will be selling coffee, hot cocoa mix, chai tea, and chocolate bars. This Fair Trade project in our parish implements the exhortation of Pope Francis in Laudato Si to steward our environment and promote sustainable development wherever we can. Fair Trade helps small scale farmers maintain sustainable environmental farming practices, promotes better trading conditions, and forbids child labor and forced labor. Knights of Columbus Breakfast Come out and support the Knights of Columbus Council 9445 and Vacation Bible School after the morning Masses today. We are selling sausage and bacon burritos with coffee and orange juice for $5. We will be selling them in the cafeteria. Half of the proceeds will support this year s Vacation Bible School. Please come out and support this summer function for the kids. LGBTQ Catholic Ministry Show your support of our Newman Center s LGBTQ Catholic Ministry by marching with us in the Fresno Rainbow Pride Parade on Saturday, June 2. If you are a member of the LBGTQ community or are a family member, friend, or ally of an LGBTQ person, please join us at St. Therese Church at 9:00am for coffee and doughnuts. Vacation Bible School Thank you to everyone who has signed up for VBS this summer. We are going to have an amazing week! VBS Volunteers Needed Vacation Bible School does not happen without the help of wonderful volunteers.
