1 Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 25, 2016 Readings: Ex 32:7-11, 13-14; Lk 15:1-32 DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear Friends, Serving the marginalized can take on many different forms. In using their gifts, some feel the call to do direct service, working in the trenches. Some work for change on a systemic level. Some commit to praying for those who suffer, and others support the needy from a distance through monetary resources. It s difficult to say if any of these ways is better than another because all are necessary to address the needs of the many who live on the margins. What is essential is that no matter how an individual chooses to support the marginalized, they are faithful with their talent, time, and resources. I ve seen firsthand that those who work directly with the poor are overwhelmed by the daily need of their service. Many important nonprofit organizations are in great need of consistent and faithful donors to help provide resources that sustain their work just as much as they have a need for committed volunteers who give of their time. A leader of one of these organizations told me that the challenge of communicating with and creating a faithful donor is as important as the challenge of empowering the marginalized. This weekend s gospel contrasts two life circumstances: rich or poor, basking in abundance or living in misery. It also contrasts two choices about how we relate to others: self-centered or other-centered. We often have little control over our life circumstances, but we have complete control over how we choose to relate to others. We never finish doing God s will. We learn how to do His will by doing. The more faithful we are in the doing the more faithful we become in the living. 2 Faith, Family & Friends It s finally here!!! This Tuesday, September 27 is the first session of Faith, Family & Friends !!! Every parishioner interested in invigorating their faith and spiritual lives and that of their family are welcome and encouraged to join our parish community s religious education and faith formation program for EVERYONE! Faith, Family & Friends. We are a Learning Community committed to helping our members to be life-long learners of their faith and intentional disciples of Christ. Join us from 5:30pm to to share a community meal of pasta and salad from Carlo DiCicco with family & friends followed by our opening program at. At 6:15pm, children will be released to attend their age specific classes. The adults will attend their group session from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. The adult session will present a preview of the adult class offerings for the year and then will be given the opportunity to renew baptismal promises in a pray service to begin this new FF&F year. As always we will provide Bible Study, Family Life (relationship & parenting), and Catholic Faith topic sessions. This year there will be sessions specifically tailored for College and Young Adults. Food Festival Raffle Tickets If you have received raffle tickets in the mail and do not intend on purchasing any, please turn them in to the table in the hallway by Sunday, October 2. Thursday Morning Bible Study Community Activities Meditation and Tai Chi For Christian and Evening Meditation, Men s Scripture Group, and Tai Chi meeting days and times, refer to the calendar. Tai Chi - Thursday Evenings Tai Chi classes on Thursday evenings are held at 5:30pm and. The 5:30pm class will teach the Tai Chi Quan Short Form (24 movements) and the class features the Tai Chi Quan Long Form (108 movements). Classes are held in Cardinal Newman Hall. Instructor: Bill Titus. The cost is $10 a month. Joy of Love Moms Group Please bring your family and join us for the Opening Night of Faith, Family & Friends this Tuesday, September 27. Joy of Love families will come together before the family meal night to do a craft and decorate the tables. The playground will be open at 4pm for play and time together. Crafts and decorating will take place from 4:30pm to 5:30pm in Cardinal Newman Hall. Please join us and, if possible, bring a dessert for your children to share for family meal night. Also, please join us for our weekly Playground Ministry after the 9am each Sunday. Feast of St. Francis The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Francis on October 4. The Peace & Justice Ministry is planning an event to mark the feast day. This year's theme is "Dial Down the Heat: Cultivate the Common Good for our Common Home. The event will help answer Pope Francis' call for constructive and civil dialogue about our place in God's creation and the environmental impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities. The event is held in conjunction with the Catholic Climate Covenant on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 3:00pm in Cardinal Newman Hall. This will be in addition to our usual daily Monday through Thursday at. However there will be NO Wednesday evening on the following dates: September 28, October 5, and November 2. We will have quiet reflection as well as shared discussion with other women.
