We can never fully understand the mystery of the Trinity, but we can sum it up in the following formula: God is three Persons in one Nature. The three Persons of God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all equally God, and They cannot be divided. As Fr. John Hardon points out in his Modern Catholic Dictionary, the origins of the celebration of Trinity Sunday goes all the way back to the Arian heresy of the fourth century, when Arius denied the divinity of Christ by denying that there are three Persons in God. To stress the doctrine of the Trinity, the Fathers of the Church composed prayers and hymns that were recited on Sundays as part of the Divine Office, the official prayer of the Church. Eventually, a special version of this office began to be celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, and the Church in England, at the request of St. Thomas à Becket ( ), was granted permission to celebrate Trinity Sunday. The celebration of Trinity Sunday was made universal by Pope John XXII ( ). And in the secular realm, we celebrate Father s Day! Happy Father s Day to all Dads, Grandfathers and Godfathers! As we gather to honor these men, let us remember to also keep them in our prayers. God Love Ya! Fr. Reilly Dear Lord, we who are fathers need your help. You have placed in us the care of each other and of our children. Give us the strength and patience to cope with the many ups and downs of family life. Grant us the grace to be deeply thankful for its laughs, joys and blessings. Let our children come to know of your love through our love for them. Help us as we try to make ours a home where love dwells, a home like that of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in Nazareth. When we fail each other and when we hurt each other, soften our hearts so that forgiveness and reconciliation comes quickly and easily. Protect this family, Lord, and let it flourish in your light and in your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL REGISTRATION This year s VBS theme is Weird Animals Where Jesus Love Is One of a Kind! God filled the world with a lot of crazy creatures...including you! When kids feel weird, different, or lost in a crowd nothing compares to the extraordinary love of Jesus. Our theme this year will help kids realize just how unique and special they are. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS We are seeking adventuresome teens and adults to help with this year s VBS Weird Animals. Here's a listing of the volunteer opportunities available: Group Leader - lead a group of children. This is an ideal position for adults as well as teens seeking to fulfill service hours. Group Leaders assist the various activity site leaders as needed, make sure that their group stays on schedule, and help maintain a safe and well ordered environment during our VBS experience. 4 GOSPEL REFLECTIONS St. Augustine tells the story of meeting a small child on the sea shore who was filling a hole in the sand with buckets of water from the sea. He told her than it was impossible, and she looked at him and said, And you re trying to understand the Trinity. The challenges faced by the early Church in understanding the Trinity had a lot to do with the need to reconcile the strongly monotheistic (one God) tradition of Judaism with the tendency of the pagans to have multiple gods for a variety of tasks and circumstances. While we don t have quite the same issues as they did, we still have to overcome a mistaken idea that God the Father is the Old Testament God of judgment while Jesus is a God of love. Some of this surely comes from human experience with patriarchal cultures and personal experiences of harsh parenting. It s not the teaching of our faith. For a time, as people experimented with language in liturgy, prayer and ritual, the phrase Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier became popular as a way to refer to the Trinity. Some perceived Father and Son to be rooted in an offensive patriarchal culture. They chose to speak about the three persons of the Trinity in terms of what they did rather than who they are. But the fact is that no one person of the Trinity does one task more than another. The Son created with the Father; the Father saves through the Son, the Spirit is the ongoing presence of Father and Son in the world. The Gospel writers tell us Jesus used Father, Son, and Spirit in his own references to the divine activity he was accomplishing. Because of that revealed truth, we always begin and end there in our understanding of the Trinity. Naming God has always been a challenge. Perhaps this is why, when confronted with the burning bush, Moses wanted to know God s name, and then was left with the enigmatic I Am Who Am. In both English and Hebrew this name is a verb, the verb of being. In our first reading today, Moses on Sinai has come to know the Lord better and is still grappling with the question of the divine identity. Exodus tells us, The Lord proclaimed his name and passed by, crying out, The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity. So in fact what God does tells us something about who God is. And even as far back as the beginnings of the Hebrew people, what God did was mercy and grace. Thus, in the Gospel, we hear that God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. This is not a God of judgment and punishment. One of the deepest truths that the doctrine of the Trinity reveals to us is that God is in relationship. The union of Father, Son, and Spirit is a fluid one. The Trinity is always working, always moving, animating the world with divine life. June 15, 2014 This image comes to us from the Gospel of John, which also tells us again and again that God is love. We know from our own lives that love is both activity and mystery. It is beyond words and yet it can be expressed in words. The great French novelist Victor Hugo says in Les Miserables that to love another person is to see the face of God. Our experience of love may help us to understand the overflowing love of the Trinity. Our longing for love may bring us even closer to that mystery. 5 March for Marriage Thursday, June 19, 2014, Washington, D.C. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Life and Family is sending a bus from each county of the Archdiocese to attend the Marriage March in Washington, D.C. Archbishop Chaput, in his weekly column, stated that, "This is a crucial opportunity for Philadelphia Catholics to show their support for the family and for marriage as a permanent union of one man and one woman." The Archbishop urges all Catholics to show "support for the nature of the family and the integrity of marriage as foundation stones of our life as a nation." The day begins at 10:30 AM and concludes at 2:00 PM. The cost for the bus is $15.00 per person.
