Gaudio Love, wife, Annette, children and grandchildren Dear Parishioners, The opponents of Jesus just won t give up! Last week, they tried to trip him up on the sticky question of taxes to Caesar. Today is a cunning attempt to lead him into a hair-splitting debate and lose him in the wilderness of the subtleties of the Mosaic Law! It is noteworthy that St. Matthew uses the same Greek word here - to test - as when describing Jesus earlier confrontation with Satan in the desert. Clearly, he wants us to understand that those who test Jesus are in league with, or at least unwittingly doing, the work of Satan. St. Matthew sets the scene well! A Pharisee - a lawyer - asks Jesus which of the commandments is the greatest. His response does not seek to set aside the Law, but instead to interpret it more fully. For Jesus, the greatest commandment is found in Deuteronomy: You shall love the Lord, your God, with your whole heart, and with your whole being, and with your whole strength. Jesus answers emphasizes the centrality of love - a cord the binds together the human heart and soul and directs us toward God. While asked for only one commandment, Jesus adds a second, quoting from Leviticus, which he says is equal to and inseparable from the first: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Everything, he says, hangs on these two interrelated commandments. Like a door on two hinges that will not open or close properly if out of alignment, so, too, our lives if we do not love God and our neighbor. Jesus is not discounting any other commandments, but simply emphasizing that these two are foundational. So what does this declaration mean for us today? As we struggle to live the Christian life, we can so easily compartmentalize love of God and love a neighbor. Sometimes, it may seem easier to love God than to love our neighbor. But, as Jesus proclaims, these two loves cannot be separated. By linking this gospel with a practical reading from Exodus, we are reminded that this love is more than a warm and fuzzy feeling. Out of Israel s expense of slavery in Egypt, there emerged the reality of a God who is compassionate and protective of the weak. No one is to take advantage of them or to imprison them in a relentless cycle of dependence. How challenging these ancient words and this ethical wisdom can sound today.

3 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 29, 2017 Continued St. Paul confirms this teaching by reminding the Thessalonians of their fidelity to Christ. He rejoices with them because they have remained steadfast and active in faith. For them, faith is more than a passing fad. Clearly, they have recognized the word of God in Paul s preaching, and through the lived example of their lives, have now become ministers of the gospel to others within their community and beyond. Awaiting the return of Christ, they have become people of hope, bringing the combined love of God and neighbor to others. May we, too, be people hope - witnessing the gospel to others and sharing God s love. God Love Ya! Fr. Reilly All Souls Envelopes All Souls Mass A special Mass will be celebrated on November 2 nd, 2017 at 7pm in St. Richard Church for all of our deceased members of our parish family who have returned home to the Lord, especially those who have passed this year. We invite you to join us for the Mass and to use the special envelope provided in your packet and return it before November 2 nd ; in order that your loved ones name may be placed on the altar for this Mass and be remembered during the month of Mass Intentions ~2018 Mass Book The 2018 Announced Mass Intentions Book will be opened on Monday, October 30, 2017 at 8:30am in the school hall. I, along with my helpers, will begin this process as soon as I arrive after Mass. The procedure will be: You will come into the hall and receive a number and have a seat and wait until your number is called. You will then come to a table where I will be with envelopes marked with a date and time of each available Mass. You will tell me your dates and if it is available you will receive the envelope with the month, day, and time already on it. You will then go to another table and fill in the name for whom you wish this Mass and at whose request. There will be helpers to help you with this. When your envelopes are properly filled in you will turn them in to a helper, along with $10.00 stipend for each Mass. Each person will be permitted ONLY 5 Masses. Two for a weekend (Saturday evening or Sunday) and Three for an 8:00am Mass during the week. This procedure works very well; as it moves along quickly and easily. 4 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 29, 2017 Today s Liturgical Summary The 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time The overarching theme of all the prayers and readings for Mass today is that of LOVE. We see it specifically mentioned in every prayer, every hymn, and especially in the Gospel! ~In the Entrance Antiphon for Mass today we say turn to the Lord and his strength, constantly seek his face! ~This is the exact text of our communion chant I Have Loved You. ~While our opening hymn clearly identifies our focus as we sing... Love Divine All Loves Excelling. St. Matthew reminds us that Jesus spoke of both love of God and love of neighbor as the greatest commandments. The Gospel acclamation states Whoever loves me will keep my commands says, the Lord and my father will love him and we will come to him. Jesus in the Gospel teaches us... You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul with all your mind and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. Also, in the Collect, Father prays Increase our faith hope and charity and make us love what you ve made. This prayer is echoed in our recessional hymn For the Fruits of this Creation. Votive Candles are available every week with intentions of IMO in memory of or in loving memory of your deceased loved ones, IHO in honor of the living, FGH for good health, or IT in thanksgiving. For a donation of $10. the candles will be lit starting with the Saturday 4:30pm mass and will be lit for the entire week at St. Richard Church. Candle intentions may be obtained at the rectory during regular business hours. St. Richard Memorial Society Masses are said one week day a month for the intention of all those who are enrolled. Newly enrolled members are published in the bulletin. These masses can be obtained for a donation of $20. at the rectory during regular business hours. Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held in St. Richard Church at 12:30pm on the following Sunday dates October 29th November 19th December 3rd The parents of the child are required to attend a Pre-Jordan class; godparents are also welcome but not required to attend. Please call the rectory to make arrangements to attend the class. AFTER you have attended the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godparents, you may then call the rectory to book the date for the Baptism which are held almost every Sunday immediately following the 11:30AM The Trifecta of Fun, Faith and Family On October 31, we celebrate the secular day of Halloween. On November 1st & 2nd, we celebrate the faith days of All Saint & All Souls respectively. But did you know the connection? Halloween began as All Hallows Eve which was short for evening before All Hallows Day or, as we call it, All Saints Day. All Saints Day, November 1, applies to ALL the people in heaven (canonized or not) and we include all of these people when we say the Communion of Saints during the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass. November 2 is All Souls Day and is a day for us to remember those who died and may be in Purgatory being purified before going to heaven.. We pray for these souls so that they go to heaven to be with Jesus. All Saints Day is a Holyday of Obligation. Prayer for Halloween God of Laughter & Joy, We turn to you in the way of our ancestors, grateful of the abundance of food and festivity that surrounds us at the time of year. Keep all children safe as they embark on their Halloween revels. Light their way through the dark night and enfold them in love. May the real treat of their lives be grace that multiplies in depth and breadth as they grow older. We pray this with all the Saints in Heaven. AMEN Prayer for All Saints God of Heaven & Earth, I give you thanks for the saints who encircle my life. May their courage, compassion and commitment strengthen me when my faith waivers and my hopes dim. May their holy vision and attentive hearts motivate me towards a life of deeper prayer and devotion. May their generosity and service inspire me to reach out to those who are poor and vulnerable. As their holy lives touch mine, draw me further along my own path in sainthood. In the blessed name of Jesus Christ, your Son, I pray. AMEN (prayers obtained from Sadlier Religion website)
