JOSEPH FOOD PANTRY: NEW HOURS: The pantry is open on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 7:30PM for our neighbors in need (located in rectory conference room). Donations may be brought to Mass on Saturday/Sunday. Thank you for your support with all non-perishable food items and cash donations. Through the waters of Baptism we welcome into the Catholic Faith the following little ones Elizabeth Siara Maraj, Richard Gabriel Maraj, Roger Michael Maraj, and Eric Thomas Lund who were recently Baptized at St. Joseph Church. 3 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, May the Lord give us His peace! I hope and pray your New Year is off to a blessed start. I have so much I wish to share with you about out our Collaborative and the great things that are happening, however the sadness of this week beckons me, indeed all Catholics, and men and women of goodwill, to pause, reflect, pray and act. January 22nd marks the 46th Anniversary of the legalization of abortion in our country. The Church in the United States has deemed it a day of prayer and penance, in reparation for the 60 million innocent human lives who have been lost through abortion. Please consider going to Mass, paying a visit to the Blessed Sacrament, praying the Rosary and/or Divine Mercy Chaplet, and fasting. We beg God s mercy upon our nation and our Church, for our failures at protecting and standing up for life. Reverence and respect for human life and acknowledging the dignity of every human person, from the first moment of conception to natural death, begins with the lives that God puts right in front of us. The reason for the introductions before every Mass is a first step in creating a culture in our parishes where all are known by name, welcomed, loved and our human dignity is honored. Jesus incarnation, life, death and resurrection proclaims God s love for all human life. You are worth Jesus! Think about that for a moment: from the Heavenly Father s perspective, your worth is Jesus Christ, whom the Father sent to be the expiation, the atonement, for your sins and mine. Our value, the value of every human life, in the womb and those who are terminally ill, is on display and proclaimed on the Crucifix, in the Gospels and celebrated in every Mass. We are a people for life because God is for life and His command is clear: thou shalt not kill, and love your neighbor as yourself. Being a people for life shapes and inspires all that we do: The way we love and care for our family and our neighbors, the way we pray for our enemies and forgive those who have hurt us, the way we visit the sick, imprisoned and elderly, the way we discern candidates for our elections and what their stances are on abortion, as well as our involvement in the political arena. As Catholics, with the Gospel in one hand and the Catechism in the other, we engage in political discourse, seeking to shape the common good so that it reflects the fundamental principles upon which the Declaration of Independence is written: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter.. I would like to share a prayer I have been praying for the unborn for over 20 years on a daily basis. May this prayer become part of your daily prayer routine and inspire you to be a champion for life: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion. -Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen As I write this I am very much aware that most of us have been affected by abortion, whether personally ourselves, with a family member or a friend. God s mercy endures forever. There is no sin that he cannot forgive. Psalm 51 states that God will never turn away a heart that is humble and contrite. We are here for you. We love you. Jesus loves you and is calling out for you. Fr. Joseph, Fr. Arthur and myself are here for you to listen and accompany you on a journey of healing. The Archdiocese also has a beautiful healing ministry for women who suffer from abortion known as Project Rachel. For more information: and Your brother in Christ, Fr. Matt+ Youth Group - Pot Luck to celebrate World Youth Day Panama Next night of fun and games will take place on Friday, January 25th at 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at St. John's lower church hall. Cost is $4 or bring a dish to share. Take part in videos from World Youth Day in Panama, games, discussion, and food from around the world. Special note: For the first time, we are expanding to middle school aged kids as well. Separate activities for older students. We encourage 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to join in and tell us what you would like our middle school program include. All elementary and middle school age kids welcome.

4 JANUARY 20, 2019 Thinking About Becoming Catholic? Do you know of anyone, maybe yourself, who may be interested in becoming a Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is designed for non-catholics who may be interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and perhaps becoming a Catholic, by preparing for and receiving the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Adults who were baptized as Roman Catholics, but did not receive further catechetical formation, and consequently did not receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist are also candidates for this program. For more information, contact Fr. Matt at the rectory. Now more than ever, our priests, seminarians and those contemplating the call to serve Our Lord need our prayers. Here a St Joseph Parish we have a way for you to do your part to support these men who have proven to be our good shepherds and those in training or contemplating the call to be a good shepherd. The vocation crucifix is available to be signed out by individuals or families for one week. Take it home and pray the vocation prayer daily. The sign up sheet is in the entrance of the church. The process is easy. Choose your week, sign the sheet. When your week arrives pick up the crucifix in the sacristy when you come to mass. Please return the crucifix to the sacristy before the 4 pm mass on Saturday so it will be available for the next person. If you re family is new to the parish, or maybe have a child who missed some years of religious education, please contact us; or restjohnquincy@gmail.com Our youth preparing for their First Eucharist will be receiving First Reconciliation on Saturday, January 26th at 11Am at St. John the Baptist church. Please keep them in your prayers. Also, please prayer for their parents and family, who are the first teachers of the faith. Our parish Religious Education team supports these families as they continue the journey in their faith formation. MEETING CHRIST IN PRAYER; An eight-week guided prayer experience based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius will be held during Lent.
