Our Mission: We, the faithful of St. Mary Star of the Sea, joyfully continue the mission begun in We share in Christ s ministry by proclaiming the Gospel in our thoughts, words, and deeds seeking to spread the Good News of salvation under the loving care of our Blessed Mother. Since we live in challenging times of new possibilities, we as stewards pledge to strive to provide for the spiritual and temporal needs of our people. As the stars guide the ships at sea, we seek to be a welcoming beacon of prayer and community to all who come that they find a home for their hearts and comfort for their souls. A copy of the birth certificate and attendance at Baptism Preparation class are required. Baptism is celebrated several Sundays a the year at 11:00 AM. Reconciliation/Confession Saturdays after 4:00 pm Mass, by request after weekday Mass, and other times that are mutually convenient for you and Fr. Chris. Marriage Couples wishing to marry must contact Fr. Chris at least six months prior to the date they desire. Log on to for info. Anointing of the Sick Anyone seriously ill may ask for this Sacrament of Healing. You may also request prayers and visits to homebound/ill parishioners. 2 ST. MARY STAR OF THE SEA BROOKLYN This weekend, August 18th & 19th we welcome someone very well known and loved in our neighborhood - Fr. Dominick Dellaporte! Fr. Francis Gargani, CSsR, will return to celebrate Mass on Saturday, August 25th and Fr. Matthew Allman, CSsR. will be back for our 10 am Sunday Mass on the 26th. I am very grateful to Fr. Dominick, Fr. Francis, Fr. Matthew, & Fr. Kamil for coming to celebrate Mass with you. I give my deepest thanks to my Rectory Office Manager Debbie Russo and our Rectory staff Sylvia, Philip & Deirdre. Special thanks also to our great volunteer parishioners Carmen, Doris, Genine, & Rich! Keep up the wonderful work everyone I ll see you soon. Thank you! Please remember, the wonderfully generous parishioners who are continuing to pay their pledges in the Generations of Faith Campaign should be thanked for the beautiful marble floor in our sanctuary and all the new carpeting in our Church! 3 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Please remember to join us on Sunday, September 9th, following the 10am Mass for a special brunch in Dugan Hall. I hope to see you all there. R.C.I.A. is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the method by which adults become members of the Catholic Faith. The process is a two year journey of study, reflection, and prayer. We will have classes almost every week over the next two years, except for July & August. If you know of someone in our parish who wishes to become Catholic, please ask them to contact the Rectory. ** Please note: You must register for this 2 year program by Thursday, September 6th! ** Food for Thought Every so often, someone approaches me asking if they are able to receive Communion due to divorce or other issues. There are many misunderstandings regarding our Church s teachings. You may always speak with me; I will do my best to help you. Please give me a call and we ll figure out a good time to talk. I would love nothing better than to have you reunited with Christ in the Eucharist! This Eucharistic Feast Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural-and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! The Collection for August 11th &12th was: $1,834 We are taking our usual summer dip Please help us average at least $2,300 a week so we can continue making essential repairs! 4 AUGUST 19, 2018 Non-Catholics are invited to join us in prayer. We kindly remind them not to come forward to receive Holy Communion. Catholics who are new to our Parish are asked to please introduce themselves to Fr. Chris after Mass. Registration may be done at the rectory during office hours or by dropping the parish membership form in the collection basket. Active parishioners are those who are registered, join us regularly for the celebration of the Mass and use the weekly donation envelopes. Only in this way can we issue documents attesting to Parish Membership and Catholic practice.
