It is a time when we reflect on a gift that our parish schools have been, and still are, to our parishes, and to us as individuals. Many of you, like me, are graduates of Catholic schools, and we know how important they were to our formation as a Catholic Christian, and a loyal American citizen. Many of us can remember the days when every parish had its own parish school. For many reasons, especially changing demographics, decline in birth rates, etc., this is no longer reality. Catholic schools are now established on a regional level, like our own St. Pio Catholic Regional School. By combining efforts we have assured that our parish children can still enjoy a full-time, excellent Catholic education, close to home. When St. John Neumann started the first Parochial School System in the United States here in Philadelphia, he did that because the public schools were teaching a Protestant form of Christianity which was at the time basically anti- Catholic. He knew there had to be an alternative established to preserve and strengthen the Catholic faith in the children of these new immigrants. Today we have a different challenge. So much of the modern pop culture around us is viciously anti-catholic and anti-religion. Secular values are promoted. Our children need the Christian formation that a full-time Catholic education at St. Pio provides so well. While religious formation is paramount, a Catholic school must also be able to compete academically with the public and private schools in our area. A future Catholic leader must not only know his or her faith, but be able to live that faith as a successful citizen in the business world in which they will live. If anyone wants their children in St. Pio, the inability to afford tuition should never prevent them from that goal. The financial aid that we can provide from the Connelly Foundation is there to assist. I am so pleased that our school has adopted the governance model recommended by the Archdiocese, of a Board of Directors of limited jurisdiction. This board, which is now well established, is assisting the pastors, the principal and staff of St. Pio School in developing strategic plans for increased enrollment, financial stability, and enhanced academic programs. Please take a look at St. Pio School during our annual Open House today from Noon to 2pm, and Tuesday from 9:00am to 10:00am and 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Come and take pride in your parish Catholic school, and be a part of its great legacy! God Love Ya! Fr. Reilly
3 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January Dear Parishioners, Thank you very much for surprising me with your Christmas gift. I am really grateful to Fr. Reilly and each and everyone of you. St. Richard s Parish is always in my prayers and please remember to pray for me too. Thank You and may the Blessed Mother keep all of you closer to her heart. Sonny. (St. Charles Borromeo Seminary- Theology III) All are welcome!! Come celebrate the 40 year Anniversary of our Parish Charismatic Prayer Group Good Morning, Tuesday February 7th 7:30pm St. Richard Church Father Reilly will be the celebrant I am the Lord your God. Today I will be handling all of your problems. Please remember that I do not need your help. If the devil happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, DO NOT attempt to resolve it. Kindly put it in the SFJTD (Something For Jesus To Do) box. It will be addressed in my time, not yours. Once the matter is placed into the box, do not hold on to it or attempt to remove it. Holding on or removal will delay the resolution of your problem. If it is a situation that you think you are capable of handling, please consult me in prayer to be sure that it is the proper resolution. Because I do not sleep nor do I slumber, there is no need for you to lose any sleep. Rest, my child. If you need to contact me, I am only a prayer away. Love Eternally, The Lord Your God Pre-Cana Classes In preparation for the sacrament of Marriage, Pre-Cana classes are required for all couples. You must register in advance for this class. For registration and more information visit Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held Sundays in St. Richard Church after the 11:30 Mass. (Dates are subject to change.) The parents of the child are required to attend the class; godparents are also welcome but not required to attend. Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godparents, you may then call the rectory for an appointment to book the date of your choosing. The class dates are: January 31st February 19th March 19th Feast of St. Blaise We observe the feast of St. Blasé February 3rd. Blasé was a bishop who lived in Armenia in the fourth century. At one time the church celebrated many different saint s day blessings. Not all of them are remembered today, but the one on the feast of St. Blasé has remained popular. St. Blasé is the patron saint of people with throat ailments, so on his feast day many parishes have a special blessing of throats. Two candles that were blessed on the feast of Candlemas (February 2) are tied with ribbon in the shape of a cross and then touched to people s necks while a prayer for health and healing is said. On this day we especially remember people who suffer from diseases of the throat, but this blessing also reminds us that God cares for all people who are ill. Blessing of throats will take place next weekend at all Masses.
4 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 29, 2017 Dear Friends, The theme of this year s Catholic Charities Appeal is Giving Hope to All. The gift of hope is a precious treasure, especially to someone on the verge of despair. It s the hope of the homeless person that the world has not completely forgotten him. It s the hope of a mother that a quality education is possible for her special needs child. It s the hope of the immigrant struggling with a new language in a new land. And it s the hope of the Church herself for new priestly vocations while being able to care for retired Clergy who devoted their lives to the Church and her people. Hope is the opposite of despair. Where despair is darkness, hope is light. Where despair is helplessness, hope is empowerment. And this year the Catholic Charities Appeal will be a channel of hope for hundreds of thousands of people through countless organizations and ministries in the Archdiocese, and a positive source for good in all facets of the Church in Philadelphia including: Education Social Services Evangelization, parish and spiritual life Clergy Local Mission Activities It humbles me to know that I can once again count on your extraordinary generosity to help give hope to those who need it most. Gratefully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia Catholic Charities collection begins next week, February 4th/5th In what areas of your life do you need to focus on living the Beatitudes? How can you show others they are creatures of God this week? Parish Registration It is IMPORTANT that all Catholics within our boundaries be registered and be active participants of the parish. Circumstances often change registration status. If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are registered correctly in the parish. Have you moved away from your parental home (not just for college)? Have you recently changed your marital status? Are you living with your parents, are over 18, and not receiving your own mailings and envelopes? If you answered yes to any of the above, please call the rectory office to update your registration status. If you made your sacraments here at St. Richard/Holy Spirit or went to school here does NOT automatically register you in the parish. In order to receive a Letter of Eligibility from the pastor to be a godparent or sponsor, you MUST be a registered and active participant of the parish. New families moving into the parish..welcome! You can register online at
