Where did it go?? In our country, Labor Day is a special day, even though it is not a religious celebration, Catholics happily celebrate it because it recognizes the value of an activity essential for human beings: work. According to history, the idea of celebrating Labor Day in the United States came from Matthew Maguire, a machinist from Paterson, N. J., who wanted to recognize those who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold. In most of the European and Latin American countries, the equivalent of Labor Day is celebrated on May 1, a date that Pope Pius XII wanted to include in the Catholic liturgical calendar, creating the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. This relation between faith and work is not new in the Christian tradition. In the Gospel, Jesus includes workers, field laborers and shepherds in his parables to teach us about God and his Kingdom. In the seventh century, a great saint, St. Benedict of Nursia, founded the order of monks who in time would be known as Benedictines. Benedict wanted his monks, even though they lived in a monastery praising God, to also work in order to earn their livelihood. They would worship God not only through prayer, but also through their work. In this way, the Benedictine monks helped improve society in Europe. Their monasteries expanded throughout the European continent, giving it spiritual unity. They also taught agricultural techniques to the people and preserved the classical culture through their work copying the great Greek and Roman philosophical and artistic works. This cultural and spiritual revolution was founded in a simple motto: ora et labora, pray and work. Since its beginnings then, the church has intimately linked these two activities: prayer and work. For us Catholics, prayer is essential. St. Alphonsus Liguori used to say sharply: He who doesn t pray, won t be saved. With this phrase, the saint wanted to emphasize how important prayer is for our life. In the same way that work guarantees bodily food, prayer is the nourishment for the spirit. Without prayer, the soul dies, just like the body does when it is deprived of food and water.

3 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 3, 2017 continued For this reason, Labor Day must be also a Day of Prayer for us Catholics. Both are intimately related, to the point that prayer is a kind of work in the sense that it is an activity in itself and that work must become a prayer, if lifted and offered up to God. On this Labor Day let us keep in our prayers all workers and in a special way for those who work for our spiritual health. Let us pray that we will always have a worthy job, and that the tables of families everywhere will be filled with the bread that nourishes their body, and their souls will be nourished by the Bread of Life given to us by Jesus in the Eucharist. May Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Our Blessed Mother and St. Joseph, model of a prayerful worker, fill our parish with blessings of work and peace this day and always! God Love Ya! Fr. Newly enrolled members are published in the bulletin. These masses can be obtained for a donation of $20. at the rectory during regular business hours.

4 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 3, 2017 Today s Liturgical Celebration Summary The focus for Liturgy today could be on that of hard work both spiritual and physical. Jesus is very specific in the Gospel today as He refers to the difficult spiritual task of carrying one's own cross. He says, Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. Modeling our spiritual work after Jesus is reflected in the theme of our opening hymn "Take Up Your Cross! The opening antiphon for Mass today refers to the forgiving nature of God. This act of mercy in imitating the forgiving nature of God is also a difficult type of spiritual work. We find this evidenced in the lyrics of our hymn during Holy Communion when we sing Loving and Forgiving. "Come to Me is our hymn during the presentation of the gifts which is a homage to the national holiday, Labor Day that we celebrate this weekend. We find in the lyrics the words of Jesus when he says, Come to me, all who labor and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest. One can also look to the lyrics of our recessional hymn "For The Fruits of This Creation to see the continued emphasis on this Monday's celebration of the dignity of physical work. ***Parish Registration*** It is IMPORTANT that all Catholics within our boundaries be registered and be active participants of the parish. Circumstances often change registration status. If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are registered correctly in the parish. Have you moved away from your parental home (not just for college)? Have you recently changed your marital status? Are you living with your parents, are over 18, and not receiving your own mailings and envelopes? If you answered yes to any of the above, please call the rectory office to update your registration status. If you made your sacraments here at St. Richard/Holy Spirit or went to school here does NOT automatically register you in the parish. PLEASE NOTE: In order to receive a Letter of Eligibility from the pastor to be a godparent or sponsor, you MUST be a registered and active participant of the parish. Pre-Cana Classes In preparation for the sacrament of Marriage, Pre-Cana classes are required for all couples. You must register in advance for this class. For registration and more information visit Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held in St. Richard Church at 12:30pm on the following Sunday dates: September 24th October 29th November 19th December 3rd The parents of the child are required to attend a Pre-Jordan class; godparents are also welcome but not required to attend. Please call the rectory to make arrangements to attend the class. AFTER you have attended the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godparents, you may then call the rectory to book the date for the Baptism which are held almost every Sunday immediately following the 11:30AM Mass.
