In our first reading the prophet Malachi tells us that the Lord will send a messenger. He will send someone who will be a purifier, someone to help prepare the people for entrance into the temple of the Lord. In our gospel, Luke provides us the scene at the temple where Mary and Joseph bring their firstborn son to be offered to the Lord. Simeon recognizes the child as this purifier, as the one sent to be a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for your people Israel. It is in the 2 nd reading from the Letter to the Hebrews, however, that we come to understand how Jesus is that purifier. Though God could have saved us any number of ways, he chose to send his only Son to become one of us. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews states that surely Jesus did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham. It is because Jesus was sent to help us that he became one of us. Hebrews says that in order to be a merciful and faithful high priest before God, Jesus had become like his brothers in every way. Why? Why was it that the creator of the universe had to become one of us in order to fulfill the prophecy of Malachi and the other prophets? Why could not God have simply chosen some other way? The mystery of this choice will certainly never be completely understood, but we read in the Letter to the Hebrews that Because Jesus himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who were being tested, and are we not tested every day? This is an astonishing sign of the love of God for his people. Unlike the gods and deities of other faiths, where no doubt people are sincerely seeking God, it is in the Christian faith, and only the Christian faith, where we can say that God knows, truly knows, what it means to suffer. When we struggle with self-doubt and the pain of loss and anxiety for the future and the suffering of love in its many forms, we can turn to God who knows exactly what that means. God is presented as a broken king, a suffering servant, a dead man on a cross who came to lay his life down for you and for me. The man on the cross is God, and God knows our suffering and yearns to comfort us as our mother Mary no doubt comforted the infant Jesus that day. When Mary and Joseph presented Jesus that day, they participated in God s plan to give meaning to our suffering and so to provide a light to the nations, a new hope for the world. God Love Ya! Fr. Reilly

Friday, March 14 th, 7 9 PM in Gospel Reflection February 2 is the much-ballyhooed Groundhog Day. That groundhog afraid of its own shadow might be a good mascot for us in these dreary February days, though. Far too often we act as though there s a monster under the bed, something in the dark that s waiting to pounce on us. We wake up from our sleepy lives and as soon as we re confronted with something new and perhaps startling, we run back to our caves. We think we must have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, and we scurry back to where we re comfortable, even if it s a dark, underground den. For the past few Sundays we ve heard accounts of Jesus calling his first followers. We might be feeling exhilarated by that challenge, or we might be feeling not quite up to the task. Today, the liturgical calendar takes us back to the Christmas season with the feast of the presentation of the Lord. But if we think it s going to be time to bask once again in the soft glow of Christmas lights, then we need to take another look at the Gospel reading. While the infant Jesus is recognized as the promised messenger of salvation, the revelation also brings with it the promise of discord and contradiction. Salvation isn t going to be a cozy retreat. Simeon prophesies that a sword will pierce Mary s heart. He also says the thoughts of many will be laid bare. While this feast has its somber moments, however, it is celebrated as a feast of light and often referred to as Candlemas. In times past, the year s supply of candles were blessed on this feast. We include it among the joyful mysteries of the rosary. Simeon and Anna both seem to be well-known in the Temple precincts. You know people in your own parish who are always around. They attend daily Mass and all the extra events in the parish. They ve been part of the parish for as long as most people can recall. They keep the faith and their very presence is part of handing on the faith to new generations. They ve been around long enough to know that all life is a mix of darkness and light, but they believe the light always prevails no need to run from its rays. When these two holy people see Mary and Joseph and the child Jesus, they recognize the divine presence and herald the good news. Luke tells us that both of them proclaim prophetic words about this child. They were truly in the right place at the right time. But I suspect they would also proclaim the wonder of all the infants being brought to the Temple to be presented to God. Yes, Jesus was special, but each child was part of the Chosen People. Jesus was being claimed and redeemed in this ritual presentation. In the same way, each child brought to our churches for Baptism increases our family of faith. And, like Simeon and Anna, we welcome those children and proclaim the wonder of their lives as they re presented to God. At the end of our lives, we will be brought forth once more to be presented to God in the funeral Mass of the Resurrection. We will be welcomed into eternity with wonder and awe. What we do between those two presentations will determine how much we ourselves are in the right place at the right time. (Bringing Home the Word; Copyright 2013, Franciscan Media, 28 W. February 10, Rectory April 14, Church March 10, Church May 12, Church Sneak Next Sunday s Readings Isaiah 58:7-10 A prophet provides the people with a sure formula for success. Its main ingredient is sincere religion. 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul tells us that he did not use fancy words when he preached. He depended on the Spirit and the Spirit s powerful presence to transmit the message of Christ crucified. Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus proclaims that his followers are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Liturgical Bits and Bytes: Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest There is a specific rite book for this. It is published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Acknowledging the fact that priests are not always available in all places at all times, this rite provides for a Liturgy of the Word with a Communion Service, if consecrated hosts are available in a tabernacle from a previous liturgy. This service can be led by a deacon or by a lay person. It includes most of what we experience at Mass on Sunday except the Eucharistic Prayer and consecration. It is not an ideal situation, but does provide for a liturgical community celebration when a priest is not available. Archbishop s Lecture Series 2014 Mark your calendars for four tremendous lectures, featuring the Church s most distinguished scholars and authors speaking on the most compelling topics concerning Catholic faith and its relationship to the modern world. $5.00 donation per lecture.
