Dear Parishioners, Today is the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. Several times throughout the year, we celebrate the dedication of this church or that church. The anniversary of the dedication of our own cathedral, Saints Peter and Paul, the center and focus of unity in our own archdiocese, is on our liturgical calendar, as a feast day, and is celebrated each year. One might ask, What is the big deal about a church in Rome? Very simply, the big deal is the fact that this church is the Cathedral of Rome, officially called the Archbasilica of our Savior or St. John Lateran Basilica. Many mistakenly think of the Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome as the Pope s cathedral, but that is not so. On either side of the main entrances to St. John Lateran, plaques are inscribed: The Mother and Head of all the Churches of the City and the World. This church, dating from the fourth century, is the seat of the bishop of Rome, currently Pope Francis. In every diocese, the cathedral is the symbol of unity of the local church gathered around its bishop - its defender - and through him their unity with the other churches that form the Catholic Church. The bishop of Rome has the ministry of the charity and unity of the entire Church. His cathedral, therefore, is a symbol of much more than the Church of Rome. When we celebrate the anniversary of the cathedral that is the mother of all others founded through the ages, we celebrate the Lord, who founded his Church in order to gather together in unity, under the crozier of Peter and his successors, all the children of God, wherever they may live. Today s opening prayer puts it in perspective: God our Father, from living stones, your chosen people, you built an eternal temple to your glory. We are the living stones. We are the chosen people. We are the eternal temple called to be Church. We are the ones who are called to have zeal for God s house, as the Gospel put it. We are the ones who can fulfill our prophetic mission by evangelization. So celebrate the Church today. Celebrate the domestic church, that church which is in your home. That is what we are really celebrating today. Although we all have many things to do today, take some time to enjoy each other. Spend time with each other. Grow in your relationship to other members of God s family. May God bless you and keep you today and always. God Love Ya! Fr. Reilly

3 Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 9, 2014 Announcement Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary Annual Appeal Next weekend, we welcome Mr. Eric Tamney, a Second College Seminarian, studying for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, who will be speaking to us about this annual appeal. There will be a second collection that weekend in order to drop off your Seminary Appeal envelopes that were directly mailed to you from St. Charles. Thank you for your generous support of this appeal and please continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Donna & Bob Honrychs As we prepare for festive meals and celebrations during the season of Thanksgiving, we pause, even if momentarily, to think of those for whom the season may not be so festive or celebratory. It is this time of year when we most often remember those who are in need. We at St. Richard Parish are conducting a Food Drive so that we may prepare Thanksgiving baskets for local families in need and we need your generosity to make this a reality. During the month of November, we are asking members of our parish family to bring in canned goods and other non-perishable food items with them to weekend Masses. During the Presentation of the Gifts at Mass, when we bring forth our gifts of Bread, Wine, and financial sacrifices given in gratitude to for the many blessings God has bestowed upon us, we will also call forth anyone who has food items to bring those items forward and place them at the foot of the altar. Any surplus food collected will be donated to the Little Sisters of the Poor for their outreach and ministry to the poor. During at time when we recount the blessings with which God has graced us, consider allowing yourself to be used as a blessing to someone in need! Pearl Carrigan $20. Joseph & Dorothy Conroy Pre-Jordan classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held the third Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Church. The parents of the child are required to attend the class; godparents are also welcome but not required to attend. Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godparents, you may then call the rectory for an appointment to book the date of your choosing. 4 Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 9, 2014 Advent is a season of preparation: we shop for gifts, plan parties, and decorate our homes for the coming of Christmas. Sometimes it is easy to forget the real mission of Advent: preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus Christ. We are bombarded by commercial messages in which the reason for Christmas Emmanuel, God with us is absent or overlooked. To help us prepare for this season which calls us to reflect on our lives and to repent or turn around from those things that keep us from God, we are holding our first Advent Family Event on Sunday, November 23, from 2:00 4:00 PM in St. Pio School Hall. The event will feature prayer, a variety of fun activity centers for adults and children of all ages centered on Advent, and an Advent Survival Package for families to take home to make the season of Advent truly a time of spiritual preparation and reflection among our families. Our time together will include seasonal refreshments. Liturgical Bits & Bytes: Individuals or a Community? Some ethnic groups or cultures view themselves as a united group. The Jewish people of the Old Testament considered themselves in relationship to God as a group, not as individuals. In the modern world, especially in the United States with its rugged individualism, we tend to see ourselves as individuals who come together for our religious observance rather than as an assembly, a body called together as a whole by God. If we listen to the wording of the prayers in the Mass, we will be formed into this Body, for all the official texts come from this perspective. We are saved as a people of God. We respond to God as this united people. while we each have a personal relationship with God, we are called to live out that relationship in the context of a community. To help us plan for this event, registration is necessary. Registration forms are available online at and in the back of Church. The cost is $20.00 per family. On Friday, December 12, at 7 PM in Holy Spirit Church, we will host TV and film star, actor Frank Runyeon, who will put on a one act play entitled the 3 ½ Stories of Christmas. Children and adults will be delighted as all the parts of the Christmas story are tied together for the first time: From the light of Creation to the manger at Bethlehem, from the origin of Saint Nicholas to the secret of the Christmas Angel himself!
