On July 1, 2015 we as a parish family officially celebrated our First Birthday!! Most of you were away when this joyous occasion occurred but it s never too late to celebrate such a milestone. In order to see what we have accomplished in one year, I would like to share with you some statistics. According to our statistics as of 09/09/15: Registered Families ~ 2461 Registered Individuals (make up registered families) ~ 5273 We are registering families new to the parish. As of 9/2015, we have registered 82 new families. In the liturgical world of Sacraments that first year (7/1/14 7/1/15): Baptisms ~ 45 Communion ~ 34 Confirmation ~ 52 RCIA Converts ~ 5 Marriages ~ 11 Funerals ~ 76 (includes non-parishioners as well) In the arear of finances, we are financially secure due to the selling of the former Holy Spirit Rectory. With the revenue from that sale we were able to pay off the $430,000+ debt to the Archdiocese that we inherited as a new parish. Put in a brand new boiler at the Holy Spirit Church site. (The former one was on its last leg and there was no more band aids to fix the problem) Replace a broken air conditioner with a brand new one at the Holy Spirit Church site. Waterproof the rectory at St. Richard. And we still have funds left over for any other major renovation if one occurs unexpectedly. So as you can see, we are still holding our own. I do personally believe that we can flourish as a parish, if we come together, embrace one another and extend that personal invitation to someone to come back to Church. I believe that the numbers we have still make us a thriving parish, however it would be wonderful if more people practiced their faith and joined us at mass on Sundays. If you have any ideas on how to increase attendance at Mass, please feel free to contact me with them. We must remember that We Are St. Richard Parish, and we are in this together! God Love Ya! Fr. 3 Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 20, 2015 World Meeting of Family Tickets Each parish of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will receive Reserved Standing passes to the Festival of Families on Saturday, September 26th and the Papal Mass on Sunday, September 27th. ****ALL 242 PASSES FOR SUNDAY S PAPAL MASS HAVE BEEN TAKEN.**** We have available Reserved Standing passes to the Festival of Families on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway (our spot is located approximately between 20 th and 22 nd Streets). There will be no transportation provided by the parish for this event. SEPTA will be running the Broad Street Line from AT&T Station to Walnut & Locust, from there you would have to walk to the Parkway. This will cost two tokens and includes roundtrip. No cash will be accepted from SEPTA those days. If you are interested in attending and would like to receive passes for Saturdays events; please call the rectory. This Tuesday, the World Meeting of Families begins. People from all over the world have come to Philadelphia to celebrate God s gift of family! On Saturday, Pope Francis arrives and will attend the Festival of Families to close this international gathering. On Sunday, after visiting with prisoners and their families, the Holy Father will celebrate Mass on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Our reflection today focuses on the Tenth and last Theme of the World Meeting of Families, Choosing Life. God is love. He made us for a reason, to be loved and bring His love to the world. This is your Christian mission, your call. It requires courage to respond to Jesus call to mission and service, to protect life in all stages and to be instruments of peace. Listen to the teachings of those who have been put in your life to instruct you in God s ways. Be an instrument of peace in the name of Jesus. Let us remember to pray for all who are associated with the World Meeting of Families. May God protect them and bring all of us to a renewed understanding for Christian family life. Prayer for the World Meeting of Families God and Father of us all, In Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love. With all the press surrounding the World Meeting of Families and Pope Francis visit to the City of Brotherly & Sisterly love, it is hard not to think about our Roman Catholic Faith. Are our hearts open to hear Pope Francis as he challenges all people to be better human beings as he speaks to the Congress, the United Nations and to people throughout this country and world?

4 Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 20, 2015 Urban Trinity: The Story of Catholic Philadelphia A first of its kind urban history documentary. Learn about Catholic history in Philadelphia just in time for the World Meeting of Families! History Making Productions, the Philadelphia-based EMMY award winning documentary film company behind Philadelphia: The Great Experiment, has produced a new documentary film, Urban Trinity: The Story of Catholic Philadelphia. Urban Trinity explores Philadelphia s history through the lens of the many Catholic immigrants who shaped and changed the city. The film is presented in three 26-minute chapters. Urban Trinity will be broadcast on 6abc/WPVI-TV. Parts one and two will air back to back on Tuesday, September 22nd at 7:00 pm. Part three will air on Sunday, September 27th at Midnight, after Pope Francis departure from Philadelphia. Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held the third Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Church. The parents of the child are required to attend the class; godparents are also welcome but not required to attend. Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godparents, you may then call the rectory for an appointment to book the date of your choosing. The next scheduled classes are: October 19, 2015 Sunday Mass on September 27, 2015 Many Catholics throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will fulfill their Sunday Obligation by participating in the Mass celebrated by Our Holy Father on the Parkway. Actual presence on the Parkway fulfills this obligation. Many other Catholics will fulfill their obligation, as usual, by participating in Mass in their parish churches, worship sites and chapels. In some places for this weekend, the Sunday Mass schedule has been adjusted and published for priests and faithful to attend the Papal Mass on the Parkway. Viewing the Mass in a separate location from the Parkway, although spiritually beneficial, does NOT satisfy the Sunday obligation. Every effort has been made to provide for Sunday Masses all throughout the Archdiocese in light of this historic occasion.
