2 SEPTEMBER 2, nd Sunday of Ordinary Time First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 Moses tells the people to always observe the statutes God has given them, without adding or subtracting from these laws. He reminds them that the law is just, and that any nation who heard their statutes would consider them a wise nation. Second Reading: James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 James discusses the gifts that God has given to all people and implores them to respond by welcoming the words of truth that can save them. He emphasizes that through good deeds and pure conduct, our faith in God is proven to him. Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, The Pharisees observed some of Jesus disciples eating without first purifying their hands and ask the disciples why they are going against their ancestor s traditions. Jesus responds that nothing from the outside can make a person impure. The only true evil, acts such as fornication, murder, and greed among others, come from within and make a person impure. A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS - HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 2, 2018 All good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights... Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for the orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep yourself unstained by the world. As we reflect on the word each week, we are encouraged to not just hear or read, but to decide how it directs me to live it and put it into practice. From the first page of the bible, care for the oppressed, widows and orphans was a key measure for being a faithful person. The history of the church celebrates the heroes who reached out to the needy, beginning in the Acts of the Apostles. Saints like Vincent de Paul, Mother Katherine Drexler, saw needs and acted upon them. In his exhortation Rejoice and Be Glad Pope Francis indicates that the Beatitudes are our identity card. So if anyone asks What must I do to be a good Christian?, the answer is clear. We have to do each in our own way what Jesus told us in the Sermon on the Mount. Saint James and Pope Francis tell us we are a people of the beatitudes.

4 MASS TIME CHANGE at ST. MATTHEW: Since the Archdiocese has asked us to reduce the number of Sunday Masses this is opportune time to adjust our mass schedule. For two years now over the Summer we have combined the 8:00 am & the 9:00 am into the 8:30 am Mass. As we will now have one less priest we will extend the summer schedule throughout the year. St. Matthew Sunday Mass Schedule: Saturday Vigil: 5:00 pm, Sunday: 8:30 am & 12 noon Our Lady of Perpetual Help Sunday Mass Schedule (NO CHANGE) Saturday Vigil: 5:00 pm, Sunday: 8:30 am & 10:30 am FROM THE PASTOR I was away on vacation when the news about the scandal of priest abuse in Pennsylvania broke and returned just before the news of an Archbishop challenging the Holy Father. So, except for a couple of masses this past weekend, I didn t have an opportunity to share my thoughts with you at all the masses. Here are my thoughts: For those children who were abused you have our total love and support and we ask your forgiveness. Most of the priests in the US are good priests. For us we feel the anger, hurt, betrayal and guilt that you do. On top of that we feel shame for the way a small percentage of priests have sexually abused children. It is horrid, shocking and unbelievable behavior. No matter what people tell us we still feel that it has damaged the relationship of trust that we have with parishioners. I know and understand why many Catholics are so hurt and angry, that they have stopped going to mass on Sundays, and are leaving the faith. I pray for them, that they don t let this damage their relationship with God. As Catholics we acknowledge that there is evil in the world and that there is a personal powerful force behind that evil that we call Satan. Good will always be in conflict with evil until the Judgement day. Our church does not depend on how good or bad the priests are, but on our faith in the fundamental mystery of The Cross and The Resurrection. We are a people of hope and believe we shall get past these difficult times for people of faith. - Robert P. Henry NON PERISHABLE FOOD DONATIONS: Donations of nonperishable food items are collected in the back of St. Matthew's Church and are picked up and delivered after the 12 O'clock mass on Sunday to St. Peter s Food Pantry in Yonkers. Non perishable food donations can be dropped off at any Mass. Your donations are greatly needed and appreciated. PLEASE: Do not leave clothing in the church. We are unable to accept donations of clothes. Any clothing that is left in the church has to be discarded. Thank you for your understanding. BIBLE STUDY CLASS with FR. THOMAS: The Acts of The Apostles ACTS OF THE APOSTLES Bible Study Classes will be held on Sunday s and begin on Sunday, September 16 at 4pm in St. Matthew Church.
