So what does it mean to be the people of God? It means that we are called by Christ to be the salt of the earth. Salt is a preservative. Before refrigeration it was used to keep food from spoiling. And what spoils us after our baptism? Sin. And what preserves us from sin? Faith. But if the salt loses its saltiness it is worthless both as a seasoning and a preservative. In the same way, if we weaken in our faith, we run the risk of falling back into sin. Thankfully, we have been given opportunities for penitence. Like the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which is a great gift of grace especially as we approach Lent. And the practice of fasting and almsgiving, in which we follow the example of Isaiah and deprive ourselves of relative luxuries in order to shower them on those who lack what we take for granted. And what else does it mean to be the people God? It means we are called by Christ to be the light of the world. When we were baptized, we were each given a candle lit from the Easter candle that burns brightly at every baptism. The same candle that bore the Light of Christ into the darkness of this church lights another candle, which the newly baptized carries forth into the darkness of the world. But what happens if we place that candle under a basket? The light isn t just blocked. It is extinguished. It dies. Think about that. You have been given the fire of faith that is the light of Christ. If you keep that fire to yourself, it will die, but if you share with others, it will spread. We are the people of God, the salt of the earth, and the light of the world. We are the body of Christ, united in baptism, with our Lord Jesus Christ as the head and the Holy Spirit as the breath of life that animates us. And while we may go forth today in much fear and trembling we can trust in the Holy Spirit. For our faith~ our salt, our light~ rests not on human wisdom but on the power of God. God Love Ya! Fr. 3 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 9, 2014 PPA RECOMMENDATION The members of the Pastoral Planning Committee for area 630 met on Monday, January 27th. The committee finalized our proposal which will be presented to the Archdiocesan Strategic Planning Committee. Monsignor Kutys, who is our Regional Vicar was present to hear any concerns and field any questions. The recommendation is below: St. Edmond and St. Monica will merge, with St. Monica being the parish and St. Edmond as the Worship Site. Holy Spirit and St. Richard will merge. The Archbishop along with the Archdiocesan Strategic Planning Committee will help in the decision as to which site will be the parish and which will be the Worship Site. The rest of the parishes in PPA 630: St. Charles Borromeo, St. Gabriel, St. Rita of Cascia, and St. Thomas Aquinas, will remain as is. PARISH MISSION Come Join us!!!! February 9-12, from 7-9 PM, in St. Richard Church. We have invited Fr. Francis Sirolli, OSA, to St. Richard to provide us with a parish mission. The theme of our mission will be Made in the Image of God - The Spirituality of God's Presence within Us. Over the course of three days Fr. Frank will lead us into exploring what it means to be created in God's image and likeness and what the implications are for our purpose in life and our destiny to be with God for eternity. Gospel Reflection Jesus uses two images in today s Gospel. He calls his followers to be light for the world and the salt of the earth. We re familiar with the contrast of light and darkness. We might not be quite as familiar with the image of salt. It s part of our everyday life. It has a place on every table. Some of us use too much, others avoid it for health reasons, most of us never give it much thought. Anyone living in cold climates in this month of February knows the blessing and curse of the salt that melts the snow and ice, but at the same time leaves a thin, white film over cars and roads and shoes. If it s not washed off, the salt can even become corrosive. Yet, in today s Gospel, Jesus uses the phrase salt of the earth to refer to his followers. In his day, salt was essential not only for seasoning, but also for preserving meats, fish, and other foods. Presumably Jesus disciples, several of whom were fishermen, would have been familiar with this use of salt. Salted meats would have to be reconstituted with water before they could be used. Too much salt rendered them inedible. Not enough would allow them to spoil. Jesus warns his followers that if salt loses its flavor, it is worthless. One of the things Scripture scholars tell us about this passage is that while salt can t lose its saltiness, it can become so diluted by impurities that it can no longer be used. We ve all known times when we become so overwhelmed by the day-today grind of our lives that life itself seems to lose its savor. Not only can we not be salt and light for others, we can t even find anything in our own lives to perk us up. It is perhaps at these times that Jesus words strike a chord deep within us. All of these things make salt a rich metaphor for our lives as followers of Jesus. We can think about how our faith adds spice and flavor to our lives and the lives of those around us. And we know that when we let our spiritual lives get diluted and contaminated by too many other things that we lose touch with the faith that saves us. But we also know that if we become overbearing in our insistence on other people doing things our way even if we re convinced that our way is God s way it s likely that we will turn people away from a path they might otherwise have followed. That kind of religious browbeating can become corrosive. We need to let the living water of Jesus example temper us. Salt is a chemical compound, and one of the characteristics of such compounds is the way it interacts with everything with which it comes into contact. If we are indeed to be the salt of the earth, we need to be aware of how we re interacting with others. We need to be sure that we re bringing the flavor of the Gospel to others. Jesus calls us to walk in his footsteps, to treat others the way he treated them. We might need to have a little lighter hand with the salt shaker. Like salting our food, living our faith allows for a range of differences. If we find ourselves in a peak moment when we hear Jesus words, they will be a clarion call to bring his presence to the world. But if we re feeling less than bright and salty, we need to find ways to return to the source of our faith. Sneak Next Sunday s Readings. Sirach 15:15-20 A wise teacher describes two very different paths. One leads to life, the other to death. The choice is ours to make. 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 Paul speaks of God s wisdom revealed by the Spirit to those who love God. It is the truth that God saves them through Christ crucified. Matthew 5:17-37 Jesus offers concrete examples of how he has come to fulfill the law and the prophets. Liturgical Bits and Bytes: Benediction The word actually means blessing. The usual conclusion to the rite is the blessing of the people by Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament as the host in the monstrance (a vessel on a stand to display the host for viewing). A very simple version of benediction could be a simple blessing of the people with a veiled ciborium (the vessel used to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle). Specific songs are sung, most notably O Salutaris Hostia and Tantum Ergo. The rite originated during the time when people were not receiving communion because of the emphasis on their unworthiness. They substituted viewing the Blessed Sacrament instead. Reception of Holy Communion is now encouraged and made easy through a relaxation of the laws of fast. However, the celebration of Benediction still remains in the church as a popular devotion.
