VOTIVE CANDLES 2nd Anniversary of Steve Tiberio requested by Dick & Mary Donnelly Margaret Cuticchia req. by dear friend Mary Spatola Rose Spatola requested by children 21st Anniversary of Sil Cocco req. with love, Ned Theresa Whitcraft requested by Whitcraft family Dear Parishioners, Millions were glued to their television sets last month for the Olympic Winter games in Russia. It boggles the mind to think of the sacrifices and countless hours of training that each athlete devotes to their chosen field, to win nothing more than a couple of ounces of precious metal. The season of Lent is like a spiritual Olympics-we do more, we try harder, we become more ambitious for the things of heaven and we seek a prize of far greater worth than the fading metals of glory worn by the Olympians-we seek to become saints. We have much to overcome in order to achieve that goal, not the least of which are the after effects of sin. We learn about the consequences of sin in today s first reading from Genesis. But what Genesis doesn t tell us is whether or not Adam and Eve gave any resistance to the serpent s tempting. Did they immediately give in or did they try to hold him off. For how long? Four minutes? Four hours? Jesus defiance of Satan at the beginning of the fourth chapter of Matthew stands in stark contrast to Adam and Eve s almost eager willingness to give in. Newly baptized in the Jordan, Jesus is led into the desert by the Spirit for the sole purpose of being tempted by the devil himself. Jesus quotes the Book of Deuteronomy to refute each of Satan s three offers. Satan has no kingdom to offer to Jesus, but he offers it anyway, more lies. Jesus could multiply loaves and fishes to feed thousands. Scene asking him to turn a stone into bread seems small by comparison. Jesus is unphased and unimpressed. How does he do it? How does Jesus remain so resolute in the face of temptation? Why is he so strong while we are so weak? One would think that, after Jesus 40 days fast from all food and water, he would not be able to mount a counterattack against the wickedness and snares of the devil. Jesus doesn t just pass the test, he crushes his opponent. In his letter to the Romans, St. Paul compares and contrasts the great strength and faith of Jesus with the weakness of Adam. In St. Paul s line of thinking, Jesus is the new Adam, born of the new Eve, the Blessed Mother. He was sent from the Garden of Paradise in heaven to gather together all the children of Adam and Eve who were cast out of the earthly Eden. Adam s sin of disobedience brought death. Jesus conquering of sin and death with perfect obedience and total trust in the Father brings forth new and eternal life. Sin began with a tree at Eden, and sin would be destroyed with the tree at Calvary.

3 First Sunday in Lent March 9, 2014 So what kind of Lent will you have this year? Will it be more like that of the old Adam or the new one? Will you resist your temptations for a time as Adam did, or can we fast and pray with Jesus, keeping our Lenten promise for these 40 days until the beginning of the Sacred Triduum? Are we trying to live on bread alone, without God in our lives? Are we putting God to the test, demanding things of him that we do not expect from ourselves? Are we worshiping false gods, just as Satan hoped Jesus would? Lent is our 40 days in the desert. We come here with and for the Lord. We come here to find out who we are, who we are not and who we are called to become. As we began this Lent, this spiritual Olympics, do not settle for last place or a mediocre finish. Let s go for the gold! Happy Lent everyone. God Love Ya! Fr. Reilly Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross will be every Friday during Lent, 1:00 pm with the School children and Friday evenings at 7:00 pm. **There will be no stations on Friday, March 14th because of the Holy Shroud of Turin presentation.** Fasting and Abstinence Fasting and Abstinence are mandated by the Church during this season. In fact, the call for Catholics to fast and abstain is one of the five precepts of the Church. Although people are encouraged to do more for their own spiritual growth, the currently designated fast days are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This applies to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. Fasting is defined to mean only one full meal a day. Two other smaller meals may be had. All Catholics 14 years old and older must observe the law of abstinence. This means refraining from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, or dairy products. Confirmation News Our candidates for confirmation will have a final retreat experience on Saturday, March 22, Their day will include a trip to St. John Neumann Shrine, Mass, and Confession.
