Some people "unfriended" their friends on social media, some people are being ridiculed and attacked for their convictions, property is being destroyed and some people are getting beat-up. When you turn on the TV, do you wonder if there is any good news out there? Recently, I read a quote by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. For those of you who are too young to remember - he was famous for the thousands of homilies, speeches and retreats he gave over the decades to a record number of audiences. His "Life Is Worth Living" programs in the 1950's were extremely popular, competing effectively against shows starring Milton Berle and Frank Sinatra. A television critic exclaimed; Sheen can't sing, can't dance, and can't act - all he is, is sensational. His wisdom applies to our situation today. He said - "There is no other subject on which the average mind is so much confused as the subject of tolerance and intolerance." Tolerance applies only to persons; but never to principles Intolerance applies only to principles, but never to persons (from "The Curse of Broadmindedness" by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen) The world charges the Church with intolerance, and the world is right. The Church will be intolerant about the sanctity of marriage, she will be intolerant about her creed, she will be intolerant about respect for life and be ready to die for it. And while she is intolerant even to death, in adhering to the truths given to her by her Divine Founder, she will be tolerant to those who say she is intolerant. Remember Jesus said: "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do." Come celebrate the 40 year Anniversary of our Parish Charismatic Prayer Group Tuesday February 7th 7:30pm St. Richard Church Father Reilly will be the celebrant Parish Registration It is IMPORTANT that all Catholics within our boundaries be registered and be active participants of the parish. Circumstances often change registration status. If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are registered correctly in the parish. Have you moved away from your parental home (not just for college)? Have you recently changed your marital status? Are you living with your parents, are over 18, and not receiving your own mailings and envelopes? If you answered yes to any of the above, please call the rectory office to update your registration status. If you made your sacraments here at St. Richard/Holy Spirit or went to school here does NOT automatically register you in the parish. In order to receive a Letter of Eligibility from the pastor to be a godparent or sponsor, you MUST be a registered and active participant of the parish. New families moving into the parish..welcome! You can register online at Saint Richard Parish Sacrament Schedule First Holy Communion Saturday May 6th 10:00 a.m. Confirmation Thursday April 27th 6:00 p.m. (Bishop Senior will be the Celebrant and Confer the Sacrament to the 6th graders) If you have a child attending a school other then Saint Pio Regional School or Saint Richard PREP, please call Maryellen Carroll at the Rectory. Every child seeking these sacraments needs to be part of the Sacrament Formation class. Please call ASAP to receive the entire schedule of activities and requirements. Pre-Cana Classes In preparation for the sacrament of Marriage, Pre-Cana classes are required for all couples. You must register in advance for this class. For registration and more information visit Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held Sundays in St. Richard Church after the 11:30 Mass. (Dates are subject to change.) The parents of the child are required to attend the class; godparents are also welcome but not required to attend. Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godparents, you may then call the rectory for an appointment to book the date of your choosing. 4 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 5, 2017 And the Children shall lead them We are all called to holiness. We are all called to respect each other. We are all called to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves. This week, we are highlighting 3 different lives in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. All three were children whose lives changed because of what they experienced. One died a martyr at age 14, the other two endured much suffering. All allowed their love for Jesus Christ to mold their lives. February 8: St. Josephine Bakhita St. Josephine s life began happily with her family in Sudan, Africa in Tragically, she was kidnapped by Arab slave traders when she was just seven. They named her Bakhita, which means lucky. She spent the next twelve years sold from owner to owner, suffering cruel treatment. In 1888, Bakhita was serving an Italian family as a nanny. They left her and the child at a Canossian convent in Venice. There, she first learned about Jesus. She refused to leave the convent, and because Italian law did not recognize slavery, she was allowed to stay. Baptized as Josephine Margaret, she became a Canossian sister in She spent the remaining 45 years of her life in the convent in Schio, where she was beloved for her smile and gentle nature. Her holiness was well known during her life. She often said she would kiss the hands of her kidnappers and slave masters because without those terrible events, she would never have become a Christian. She died in 1947 and was canonized St. Josephine Bakhita in February 10: Saint José Luis Sánchez del Río Born in Mexico in 1913, Blessed José Luis Sánchez del Río lived in a time when it was very dangerous to be a Catholic. While the Mexican government made laws persecuting Catholics, those faithful to the Church began to resist and fight for their rights. They called themselves Cristeros, and their motto was Viva Cristo Rey! or Long live Christ the King! Jose wanted to go with his brothers, who joined the Cristero army. He begged his mother, saying he wanted to go to Heaven soon. She allowed him to serve the army as a flag-bearer. During a battle in 1928, he was captured and convicted of treason. Before his death, he wrote his mother: I die happy because I die beside Our Lord To die for God gives me joy. He forgave his killers and died shouting Viva Cristo Rey! He was fourteen years old. Saint Jose was canonized by Pope Francis on October 16, February 11: Our Lady of Lourdes Our Lady appeared to a fourteen year old girl named Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 in a grotto in Lourdes, France. Bernadette saw Our Lady eighteen times from February 11 to July 16. During the visits of Mary, miraculous things happened. Water flowed from a spring that welled up in the grotto after Bernadette dug in the earth. This spring continued to flow until it was producing 32,000 gallons of water daily. This water continues to flow even today. Our Lady told Bernadette that she was the Immaculate Conception. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception had recently been proclaimed by the Church. Today over two million people every year travel to Lourdes, France to pray in the church built on the site of the apparition, wash in the bath flowing from the spring, and sing in the procession. There the people envision Our Lady of Lourdes as she appeared to Bernadette dressed in white, with a blue sash, holding a rosary and with yellow roses at her feet.
