Pope Francis recently said, "Hope allows us to see the beauty of God." There are many people in our world, who because of situations not of their making or because of a mistake on their part, are living without hope. It is difficult for them at that moment to see the beauty of God. Our participation in the Catholic Charities Appeal, through our prayers and charitable gifts, can significantly renew that hope for hundreds, if not thousands in our metropolitan area. The $12.5 million overall goal is vital to the efforts of the many human service programs spearheaded by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in the five county area. Because of your generosity, special education students are given the tools to succeed, the homeless are given a safe place to eat, sleep and get back on their feet, students in rough neighborhoods are given a safe place to learn, and college kids can find a Catholic presence at the Neumann Center on their campus. The Case Statement of the Appeal, which you can download for further information by accessing the special DVD presentation at reminds us that funding from the appeal helps a wide variety of needs, including immigration legal services, family counseling centers, community-based living for mentally impaired individuals, care for our retired and ill priests, etc. I am proud to say that our parish goal last year (2016) was $8,562, and we achieved it and more by raising $18,963 through 278 gifts. That was awesome, considering the many other charitable causes you contribute to throughout the year, including our parish needs. This year, our goal for 2017 is $9,418. The Catholic Charities Appeal is my personal favorite charity to which I donate. I know that the Catholic Charities Appeal Board, distinct from the Archdiocese, is there to ensure that my donation will be spent efficiently and according to the purpose for which I donated towards. I invite you to join with me and parishioners throughout the Archdiocese in Giving Hope to All. God Love Ya, Fr. Reilly
3 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 12, 2017 Parish Registration It is IMPORTANT that all Catholics within our boundaries be registered and be active participants of the parish. Circumstances often change registration status. If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are registered correctly in the parish. Have you moved away from your parental home (not just for college)? Have you recently changed your marital status? Are you living with your parents, are over 18, and not receiving your own mailings and envelopes? If you answered yes to any of the above, please call the rectory office to update your registration status. If you made your sacraments here at St. Richard/Holy Spirit or went to school here does NOT automatically register you in the parish. In order to receive a Letter of Eligibility from the pastor to be a godparent or sponsor, you MUST be a registered and active participant of the parish. New families moving into the parish..welcome! You can register online at Pre-Cana Classes In preparation for the sacrament of Marriage, Pre-Cana classes are required for all couples. You must register in advance for this class. For registration and more information visit Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held Sundays in St. Richard Church after the 11:30 Mass. (Dates are subject to change.) The parents of the child are required to attend the class; godparents are also welcome but not required to attend. Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godparents, you may then call the rectory for an appointment to book the date of your choosing. The class dates are: February 19th March 19th Becoming Peacemakers By Bishop Anthony B. Taylor The biblical understanding of peace involves far more than our usual American way of thinking of peace as having to do with the absence of conflict. We usually translate the Hebrew word shalom as peace, but it actually means everything that contributes to a person s well-being. So peace in the Bible has a nuance of wholeness, integrity, unity, and concord. Notice that Jesus eighth beatitude is about peacemaking, not peace loving. Sometimes out of love of peace, people are unwilling to ruffle feathers to confront threatening situations early on while the problem is still manageable. Here are four strategies for peacemaking: 1. Preventative peacemaking: Avoid hurtful or offensive things and seek to increase understanding and connect people. 2. Break the cycle of hatred: When injured, respond with nonviolent resistance and a willingness to endure and respond with love. 3. Eliminate injustice: Peace can t exist in a society that denies basic human rights or exploits the disadvantaged. 4. Conquer evil with good. Touch and soften the heart of the adversary especially when the issue is personal. If we limit ourselves to what we learn about other people from the news, it becomes easy to conclude that people are corrupt, violent, or greedy. But the truth is almost always more complex than what we see in the news. We become peacemakers when we do God s work in bridging differences, healing wounds, eliminating injustice, and bringing people together. Source: Liguorian, January 2013, Liguori Publications Lord, you reveal the mercy of God in the world. Forgive me for the times I ve hurt others out of anger and resentment. 4 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 12, 2017 Excerpts from Amoris Laetitia: Pope Francis s exhortation The Joy of Love, World Marriage Day Sunday, Feb. 12 The word of God tells us that the family is entrusted to a man, a woman and their children, so that they may become a communion of persons in the image of the union of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (no. 29). Every family should look to the icon of the Holy Family of Nazareth (no. 30). No one can think that the weakening of the family as that natural society founded on marriage will prove bene cial to society as a whole (no. 52). The sacrament [of marriage] is a gift given for the sanctification and salvation of the spouses (no. 72). The Church is a family of families, constantly enriched by the lives of all those domestic churches (no. 87). In our families, we must learn to imitate Jesus own gentleness in our way of speaking to one another (no. 100). Love opens our eyes and enables us to see, beyond all else, the great worth of a human being (no. 128). For more resources on Amoris Laetitia, visit marriage-and-family/amoris-laetitia.cfm For resources to prepare for marriage or strengthen your marriage and family, visit PRAYER IN DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE God our Father, we give you thanks for the gift of marriage: the bond of life and love, and the font of the family. The love of husband and wife enriches your Church with children, fills the world with a multitude of spiritual fruitfulness and service, and is the sign of the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, for his Church. The grace of Jesus flowed forth at Cana at the request of the Blessed Mother. May your Son, through the intercession of Mary, pour out upon us a new measure of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as we join with all people of good will to promote and protect the unique beauty of marriage. May your Holy Spirit enlighten our society to treasure the heroic love of husband and wife, and guide our leaders to sustain and protect the singular place of mothers and fathers in the lives of their children. Father, we ask that our prayers be joined to those of the Virgin Mary, that your Word may transform our service so as to safeguard the incomparable of marriage. We ask all these things through Christ our Lord, Amen. Saints Joachim and Anne, pray for us. splendor
