As the stars guide the ships at sea, we seek to be a welcoming beacon of prayer and community to all who come that they find a home for their hearts and comfort for their souls. A copy of the birth certificate & attendance at our Baptism Preparation class are required. We celebrated Baptism on several Sundays during the year at 11 am. Reconciliation/Confession Saturdays after 4:00PM Mass, by request after weekday Mass, and other times that are mutually convenient for you and Fr. Chris. Marriage Couples wishing to marry must contact Fr. Cashman at least six months prior to the date they desire. Log on to for information. Anointing of the Sick Anyone seriously ill may ask for this Sacrament of Healing. You may also request prayers and visits to homebound/ill parishioners. 2 ST. MARY STAR OF THE SEA BROOKLYN This Wednesday we begin the season of Lent. When we receive ashes, we are continuing a very ancient ritual of faith. The Jewish people of biblical times wore sackcloth and sat in ashes to show their repentance, humility, and their desire to do works of penance. NOW when we come seeking the symbol of Christ s cross in ashes on our foreheads, we are committing ourselves to use this season as a time of prayer, penance, works of charity, mercy, and kindness! ASHES WILL BE BLESSED AND DISTRIBUTED DURING: 9:30 AM MASS 3:30 PM Prayer Service 7:30 PM Prayer Service Please make note of these times. Ashes will only be given during these services; ashes will not be available at the Rectory. We will offer many opportunities for prayer, reflection, and grace during this Lent starting with Daily Mass. Wednesdays will again be special here. On February 21st, 28th, & March 14th we will have Stations of the Cross at 7:30 pm. On March 7th we will have a relaxed night of Faith questions and sharing in Dugan Hall with coffee & cookies, from 7:30-9:00 pm. We will also have a Day of Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesday, March 21st, which will end with Benediction at 7:30pm. On Reconciliation Monday, March 26th, confession will be available here from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM ( Other Churches may be 3:00 PM - 9:00 PM, but with dinner break. Check with Churches to be sure) I invite you to make every effort to avail yourself of all these unique occasions to receive God s grace. The love of husband and wife is a reflection of Christ s love for the Church. We ask God s blessing on all marriages. As a Catholic community, we support and respect all of our married couples. On Feb. 2nd, Bishop DiMarzio sent all the pastors of our Diocese a letter asking us to encourage all to use the Catholic Relief Services Rice bowl and Lenten calendar this Lent. 3 SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Abstinence All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent. Fasting All the faithful between the ages of are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day. Ash Wednesday For the first time since 1945 it falls on Valentines Day. All Church rules continue to apply. Perhaps practicing Catholics may consider celebrating Valentines Day on the 13th known as Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday. GIVE GOD THE GLORY A curious feature of the first half of Mark s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great secret revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secretkeeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus humbled himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God s reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. 4 FEBRUARY 11, 2018 Non-Catholics are invited to join us in prayer. We kindly remind them not to come forward to receive Holy Communion. Catholics who are new to our Parish are asked to please introduce themselves to Fr. Chris after Mass. Registration may be done at the rectory during office hours or by dropping the parish membership form in the collection basket. Active parishioners are those who are registered, join us regularly for the celebration of the Mass and use the weekly donation envelopes. Only in this way can we issue documents attesting to Parish Membership and Catholic practice.
