They were shocked to realize that their unknown guest was actually Jesus. Can you imagine how they felt? All that had just happened in Jerusalem and they, personally, walked and talked with Jesus and sat at table with him! Their amazement is clear in the Gospel, as they ask themselves, Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us? They seem to be asking, How could we not have known? The lack of recognition on the part of these men is really not so extraordinary, however, when we look into our own lives and examine ourselves. We might ask whether we, too, meet Jesus without recognition. If we are totally honest, we would probably have to say that we are not so unlike the two travelers. We know Scripture, we have heard it explained, and still we often fail to fully realize that Jesus is truly present at all times, and in a special way whenever we participate at mass or receive Holy Communion. We also should not overlook another very important element of this passage. Do you remember what the travelers did once they recognized Jesus? They did what you and I are called to do they recounted their experience! They returned to Jerusalem, found the eleven Apostles, and told about their encounter with Christ. Their experience added to the growing awareness that Jesus, indeed, was risen from the dead. If you and I truly believe in the Risen Jesus, we, too, will happily testify about him. We will share with others our own encounters with Jesus, who fulfilled the promises made through the prophets and brought us the hope of life everlasting in heaven. My dear friends, do not hesitate to do this, for our world today needs disciples who willingly give witness to their faith. We will have an opportunity to give witness to our faith as we begin this month of May dedicated to our Blessed Mother by honoring Mary with our parish May Procession on Wednesday night May 7 th at 7pm. It will truly be an inspirational evening and I am hopeful that you will all take time out of your busy schedule to honor this great woman of faith. May, Mary our Mother, continue to pour forth her blessings upon us, her sons and daughters and as a parish family. Also, this weekend we are indeed a parish of thanksgiving as 35 of our young parishioners made their First Holy Communion; may our dear Jesus present in the Holy Eucharist touch their hearts so that they may grow more deeply in love with him. The parents of the child are required to attend the class. Please call the rectory to make arrangements to attend. May 12, 2014 in the Church March 1 April 30, 2014 Our PREP is a one week, full day, summer program for students in grades 1 through 6. The program will be held June from 8:15 AM 2:45 PM. The summer program will be supplemented with five Sunday family formation sessions during the academic year along with spiritual and service activities for the family. QUO VADIS DAYS Sunday June 29-Wednesday July 2, 2014 This program provides a unique opportunity to assist high school men in leading a life of virtue, desiring a deeper faith and discerning a call to serve God in priesthood. If not, choose one and stick with it for a month and see where it leads you in your relationship with Christ. GOSPEL REFLECTIONS May 4, 2014 In the newest BBC adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes stories, season two ended with Sherlock leaping from the top of St. Bart s Hospital in full view of his friend Dr. John Watson. Season three opens with his reappearance three years later, in which he endeavors to surprise his long-time friend. Watson is anything but amused, and several times tries to throttle Sherlock. At one point he says with genuine anguish, You let me grieve. Sherlock, known for his hyper-rationality, is always somewhat shocked by normal human emotion. Viewers familiar with the original Conan Doyle stories knew at the end of season two that Sherlock wasn t dead. It was just a question of how he survived that too-obvious on-screen fall. But for John Watson, within the story, it was far less a question of the clever how than the inconceivable why. Like canny readers of literature, we can tend to jump ahead to the ending of the familiar story in today s Gospel. We know that the stranger on the road to Emmaus is Jesus. We know that the two disciples won t recognize him until the very end. We feel a bit superior, like we re in on a joke from the beginning. But let s back up from there and consider these two disciples traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus. They ve just lived through a horrendous tragedy. A man they have been following for as long as three years has just been accused of blasphemy by the leading religious and civil authorities and publicly and shamefully executed as a criminal. Suddenly everything they ve believed in has been called into question. And if they were close to Jesus and his inner circle, they ve also lost a close friend to death and are caught in a personal and intimate grief that s still very new, very raw. Would they feel tricked and betrayed if it turned out that all their anguish was for naught because Jesus was alive again, or would they be relieved and overjoyed at the miracle in their midst? While Luke tells us that Jesus explained the Scriptures to them, I m imagining that it wasn t an academic presentation, laying out the facts and the words of Scripture like so many documents in a court case. The best spiritual directors bring people along gradually, opening their minds but even more their hearts to the truth within. This is truer than ever when people are going through especially rocky periods in their lives, whether it s a marriage on the rocks, the loss of a loved one, or disillusionment with long-held beliefs. Most of us have had an experience in which talking things over with a friend or sometimes a stranger can give us a new perspective on things and we see things in a different light. We see things we had missed before. The simple act of listening can reveal to us something that we didn t know we knew. In the case of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, the discussion is condensed into a day s walk along dusty roads, followed by a meal at an inn. But the wonder of our God is that we can talk things over for as long as it takes for our eyes to be opened, for our hearts to recognize the truth that burns within us. And, like the disciples, we have the grace of the Real Presence, the sign of the Body and Blood of Christ in the bread and wine at Mass. Sneak Next Sunday s Readings Acts 2:14a, As Peter preaches, the power of the Holy Spirit moves many hearts to repentance. 1 Peter 2:20b-25 Suffering for doing good is a grace. It makes us like Christ, who suffered to rescue us from sin and reconcile us to God. John 10:1-10 Jesus reveals himself as the Good Shepherd, the gate, the entry way into the true fold.
