There is so much to celebrate on this Pentecost Sunday as a parish family and I am grateful that I am able to share in that joy with all of you. Pentecost is a reminder to all of us of what happens at every baptism-what happened at our baptism. Baptism is more than a couple drops of water washing away original sin. Baptism is being immersed in living waters, rubbed with holy chrism, and thus becoming filled with the Spirit-not just in that moment, but for the rest of our lives. It makes perfect sense that the Holy Spirit should appear as tongues of fire as we heard in our readings today. Fire purifies, removing germs and bacteria. Fire transforms. Things are not the same after a fire goes through a place. Fire is consuming. It overtakes everything in its path. Fire rages forth. It goes where it wants to go. These are the same effects that the Holy Spirit brings upon those who open their lives to Him. These are the intended effects of God in our lives. We are to be purified and made holy. Our lives are to be transformed to be more like that of Christ. We are to be consumed, overtaken by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit wants to roar and rage through us, to set our hearts on fire with love of the Lord, so we can help bring His love to others. God showers his Holy Spirit upon us like fire from heaven. If we are going to be truly Christian, we must be on fire for the Lord, we must burn with passion for the faith. And one of the greatest gifts given to us by this Holy Spirit is the gift of fortitude. Fortitude comes from the Latin word fortis which means strong, it is strength of spirit, courage of soul in the face of adversity. Fear is one of our most basic passions, rising within us when we face impending evil or uncertainty. There is a healthy fear, and fortitude keeps it within the bounds so that we succumb neither to cowardice on the one hand, or foolhardiness on the other. The phrase do not be afraid is on the lips of Jesus 15 times in the Gospels. He spoke the most reassuring words of all at the Last Supper table when, just after promising to send the Advocate to his disciples, Jesus says: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. Jesus, in a boat on the Sea of Galilee, calmed the fear of the disciples in the face of a storm. The Spirit of Christ does the same from within us, giving a sense of calm and peace when we face the inevitable storms of life. Far from false confidence, it is the assurance that God is with us and ultimate failure is impossible:

3 Pentecost Sunday May 24, 2015 Continued Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. Courage of soul is one of the most admired of strengths, and the peace of mind it brings is one of the most precious of gifts. As we continue to walk life's road as a parish family may we have the confidence to pray for the gift of fortitude in our lives. May my heart as a priest and your heart as a follower of Christ be purified, transformed and consumed by the Holy Spirit this Pentecost in order that we may be on fire for God in the world. Let us all be open to the Holy Spirit wherever he may lead us. Come Holy Spirit Come! Instill in us a blazing fire for the Lord! God Love Ya! Fr. Reilly Happy Memorial Day Weekend! As we gather with family and friends for fun and Bar- B-Ques, let us not forget the men and women who gave us this freedom to do so. Saying a little prayer for these courageous soldiers would truly be a nice way to begin your holiday weekend. Dear Heavenly Father, As we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. May those courageous soldiers who have fallen fighting for our freedom enjoy eternal happiness and peace with you in your heavenly kingdom. We ask you to please hold our service men and women in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and presence as they stand in the gap for our protection. We also remember the families of our troops, and ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes and your peace, provision and strength to fill their lives. May the members of our armed forces be filled with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Office for Divine Worship Archdiocese of Philadelphia Priests Convocation Archbishop Charles Chaput will assemble with the priests of the Archdiocese this coming week for a Priests Convocation, from May 26 through May 28, This Priests Convocation provides a unique opportunity for priestly fraternity and unity. It is also a time dedicated to prayer and reflection on the gift of the ministerial priesthood instituted by Christ for the Church. These days will include the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours and Holy Mass, as well as, talks on the theme, The Priesthood Fully Engaged, given by Matthew Kelly of the Dynamic Catholic institute. The Deans have planned in advance for the sacramental needs and emergencies in our parishes and institutes during these days with the help of many Religious, senior and retired priests. Please pray for our Archbishop, Auxiliary Bishops, and Priests during the upcoming week. May this Priests Convocation bear fruit for our priests in holiness of life and of greater service to Christ and His Church. Bits & Bytes: Relics In the Catholic vocabulary relics are the remains of the saints. We venerate them, not in themselves, but in honor of the holy people whom they represent, and in acknowledgement of the good work God has done through them. There are three classes of relics. First class relics are actual bits of bone or hair from the saint. Second class relics are items that belonged to the person, such as clothing, devotional items, etc. Third class relics are items that have touched the first class relics. We venerate these as sacramentals. We do not credit them with miraculous power, but honor God as responsible for any miracles or good works done by the saint, or through use of the relic. We acknowledge that God alone has the miraculous power. Pre-Jordan classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held the third Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Church. The parents of the child are required to attend the class; godparents are also welcome but not required to attend. Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godparents, you may then call the rectory for an appointment to book the date of your choosing. A limited number of grants are available in each grade, and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis beginning April 7, While these grants are only available to new transfer students who register at Saint Pio Catholic Regional School, they will also benefit current families by filling empty classroom seats, which increases the school s efficiency and revenue, and minimizes future tuition increases.
