Some are tourists, lovers of art and architecture. For them, St. Peter s is just one of many must-see attractions in Rome, like the Coliseum or the Spanish steps. For others, it is the very heart of the Catholic Church - a concrete sign of the unity we share as Catholic Christians Imagine yourself as one of these pilgrims, shuffling along the marble floor through a crowd of thousands, trying to take in the beauty and majesty of this remarkable place. Perhaps you are struck by Bernini s twisting bronze columns supporting the canopy high over the altar, or moved by the delicate beauty of Michelangelo s Pieta - the sculpture of the Blessed Mother holding the lifeless body of Jesus in her lap. Just as St. Peter s is, for many, the heart of the Catholic Church, the Temple in Jerusalem was the center of the Jewish faith. God was worshiped in the Temple. He resided in the Holy of Holies, the innermost sanctuary of the Temple - so sacred that only the high priest could enter, and only once a year on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Sacrifices could only be offered to God at the Temple, which is why Jerusalem was flooded with pilgrims during all of the major feasts. But we are not to put our faith in temples made by human hands. We are to put our faith in the living God. Ultimately all things made by human hands - as beautiful as they may be - will turn to rubble. The promises of God stand unshaken. Therefore, let us continue to pray and support one another in growing in our love for God and keeping our eyes firmly fixed upon Jesus. Let us witness to our faith and love of God by living in love and unity with one another. The Lord gives us many concrete signs and symbols, such as St. Peter s in Rome, which remind us how to lead our lives as Catholic Christians. Let us open our hearts to what these signs and symbols tell us, and keep our sights firmly fixed upon Jesus, and our feet firmly planted on the path that leads to eternal life in heaven. God Love Ya! 3 Thirty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time November 13, 2016 Thanksgiving Day Food Drive On the eve of Thanksgiving, November 2 3rd, a mass will be celebrated at 7 PM at St. Richard Church. We hope that you can attend this mass of thanksgiving for all the blessings you have received and to bring with you a bag of nonperishable food. All food collected will be distributed to food pantries in South Philadelphia. If you are unable to attend this mass, please bring a bag of food with you on the weekend prior to Thanksgiving Day. Please also remember the poor and hungry during the entire year by bringing a bag of nonperishables with you every Third Sunday of the month. St. Richard Parish Prayer Group Our Prayer Group will celebrate as one in Thanksgiving at Mass on Tuesday, November 15th 7PM St. Richard church Fr. Jim Casey will be the celebrant. All are welcome!!! Every child seeking these sacraments needs to be part of the Sacrament Formation class. Please call ASAP to receive the entire schedule of activities and requirements. A couple of weeks ago, we put an insert into the bulletin. The Holy Year of Mercy handout featured Fr. Bill Atkinson, an Augustinian priest and a quadraplegic, who ministered to thousands of people, in particular at Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel hill, throughout his life. People described him as inspirational, caring, courageous, kind, forgiving and patient. Fr. Bill has been given the title Servant of God and is on the road to Sainthood. We invite you to take a prayer card, found in the back of church, and pray to Fr. Bill to intercede to the Lord on your behalf. Family Fun Activity The Meal Box Every week we will offer you suggestions on how to nurture the faith of your children. When it comes to things that make you really happy, what five things would you rank at the very top? Food for Family thought: When asked what it would take to get to heaven, Jesus said, Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, and clothe the naked. That s what parents do each day. It s a paradox that our greatest happiness comes when we freely give of ourselves. Think about that the next time you re fixing supper or folding laundry. 5 November 13, 2016 Searching for Block Captains In order to help spread the word of what a great parish we have here; I am looking for block captains who will take a few extra bulletins home with them and place them in the neighbors doors. You don't have to preach, explain or even talk about your faith. You are just letting you neighbors know that we, as a parish family, are happy to welcome them and we have many great ministries and services to offer them here. We are looking to begin this by the First Sunday of Advent. If you feel that you are able to do this, sign ups will be next weekend after all the Masses. Thank you again for all you do for making our parish a great one!! Fr. Reilly Pre-Cana Classes In preparation for the sacrament of Marriage, Pre-Cana classes are required for all couples. You must register in advance for this class. For registration and more information visit Pre-Jordan Classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held Sundays in St. Richard Church after the 11:30 Mass.(Dates are subject to change.) The parents of the child are required to attend the class; godparents are also welcome but not required to attend. After you have attended the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godparents, you may then call the rectory for an appointment to book the date of your choosing.
