4 PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES January 16, 2016 PRELIMINARY Members Present: Faer James Mayo, Sharon Webster, Deacon Chuck Amsberry, Molly Mannheimer, Denise Smi, Sister Teresa Harrell, Joe Schreck, Stan Burnham, Anony Stine, and Stefan Jenie. Members Absent: Andrew Burt, Brigid O Callaghan, Christina Self. Preliminary: The meeting was called to order by Pastoral Council President, Sharon Webster. The Morning Prayer was offered by Fr. Mayo and hospitality provided by Anony Stine. November 7 Minutes were approved. PASTOR S UPDATE - Faer Mayo Fr. Mayo provided Council wi an update on e building project. The structural engineer has completed a new-modified seismic design at will not require building a completely new concrete foundation. The general contractor, Bremik, has submitted RFPs to e sub-contractors to determine a final building cost. This cost should be determined in e coming weeks. The parish collection is approximately $162,000 vs. e operating budget of $197,000 resulting in a deficit of approximately $35,000. There has already been a cut to staff salary & elimination of staff Christmas bonus. The parish budget is an item of concern given e number of parishioners who have moved on to oer parishes during is reconstruction phase. Therefore, e Council addressed how to bring new members to St. Michael s. First, it was decided to replace e 4-page new parishioner registration form wi a ½ page form. The ushers will be tasked wi determining potential new parishioners and handing out is new form. Second, ere is a motion to send post cards via US Mail to households wiin e St. Michael s parish boundary. These postcards will cost approximately $0.20 each. Stan Burnham agreed to produce once e final card is approved to send. SOCIAL SERVICES UPDATE - Denise Smi: St. Michael s was blessed wi some wonderful community support during e holiday season: st The Madeleine School achieved eir aim of breaking eir sandwich record on Giving Tuesday, December 1 by making more an 600 sandwiches at day! Those sandwiches were shared wi our homeless friends, and women and children in downtown shelters, anks to e efforts of e Newman Center and partners St. Stephen s. High-schoolers from Norwest Academy joined St. Michael s Friday Lunch volunteers December 18 to serve meals, distribute personal hygiene, and clean e pantry. Many anks to e Alumni of Jesuit High School for donating food boxes for use in bo our pantries. Molly Mannheimer and family delivered 25 boxes laden (heavily laden!) wi wonderful food on a December Saturday to our W illiam Temple House pantry location. Kudos to St. Michael s Food Pantry Volunteers for donating extra time December 15 and 16 to help pantry partner, W illiam Temple House, stock and distribute toys, children s cloing and Christmas food boxes to 346 families. According to e staff at W illiam Temple House, is is e largest number of children and families e Holiday Project has ever served! FUNDRAISING Much gratitude to Mr. Joseph Weston for a generous grant of $5,000 awarded from e OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation. The funds are in support of our Social Services Food Pantry. The children s choir was once again performing and we had a few new kids join e group. Joey Babal played e trumpet for Christmas and Epiphany. We had Annie Harkey play e cello for Christmas. She has been our cellist for Good Friday for several years. We have a short time now before Lent starts up in early February. The planning will begin soon for e Lent and Easter seasons. One change we made at has had positive feedback is a typed flyer at lists music titles and numbers at people can refer to during e Mass. PASTORAL ASSOCIATE S UPDATE Deacon Chuck Amsberry: RCIA Update: We have a good group of people progressing in e sharing and grow of eir Caolic fai wi each oer. It will be a blessed time of visiting and learning more about e Abbey, Seminary and Retreat House. We pray for special blessings from is pilgrimage to e Mt. Angel Abbey hilltop.

5 Prayer efforts for e building project: These two efforts are e St. Michael s prayer candles and e parish website, sign up to pray, Jesus, I trust in You a certain number of times each day. There is a great response for e Prayer Candle campaign. Candles are available after our weekend Masses at SMA. The daily Mass group at SJL are getting eir candles and prayer cards, too. Pastor Dennis of St. James Lueran just got his candle and prayer to pray along wi us, and also may share is prayer effort wi his parishioners. We hope e website prayers of Jesus, I trust in You, are also going well. KKIOR/INDONESIAN COMMUNITY UPDATE Stefan Jenie: November 15, 2015 (Thanksgiving eme) at 2 PM wi Mass Celebrant Fr. Now it is my joy and privilege to participate personally in her daily care when I am not traveling. In e photo are my sisters, Marty, to e left of my moer, and Barb. Marty is a retired school teacher after 34 years and now lives in Beaverton and Barb resides in Michigan and visits when she can. Oh, what wonderful times we have togeer! Thank you, Lord, for family. To me, ere are no pastoral priorities more important an doing everying we can to provide assistance, support, accompaniment and help for marriages and families here in e archdiocese. To is end we have recently re-opened our Marriage and Family Life Office, now funded by our annual Archbishop s Caolic Appeal. The purpose of is office is to provide leadership, coordination and support for e many initiatives around marriage and family at take place at e local parish or regional level. Through is office we also work closely wi our Offices of Caolic Schools and Fai Formation and Education to help ensure at we are providing a strong foundation for our children so at ey come to understand, value and pursue e true nature of marriage and family. It is an exciting, yet daunting, mission! The future of e Church, e future of our society and our culture in general, is very much wrapped up in what e future of e family is going to be. The pressures and challenges on marriage and on family life today are simply unprecedented. Your generous participation in is year s Archbishop s Caolic Appeal will enable us to fund is highpriority mission, as well as e many oer ministries at are listed on e reverse side of is sheet. Thank you for your prayerful help! Sincerely yours in Christ, Photo by Bob Kerns Supporting Marriage & Family in Christ Most Rev. Alexander K. Sample Archbishop of Portland in Oregon P.O.
