SUPREME COURT Faer Mike Walker, wise pastor of Shepherd of e Valley Church in Central Point, OR, wrote e following in his parish blog. It was posted on June 27. It makes more sense an most of what I ve been reading on blogs, hearing at coffee & donuts, on e street or anywhere else! Faer Mayo - Pastor

5 From Faer Mike s Blog: A Reflection on e Supreme Court s Decision on Homosexual Marriage This week e Supreme Court issued a decision saying at it is unconstitutional for homosexual persons not to have e right to marriage. Almost immediately afterwards e shouting matches began: It s a victory for love and freedom! Homosexual actions are a sin! Issues at cause strong divisions in opinion are fodder for a news and entertainment industry at exploits em for engagement, ratings, and advertising revenues. Stirring e pot is good business but it isn t good for understanding differences of opinion and it isn t good for giving oers e benefit of e doubt or understanding at a difference of opinion does not make someone a God hater or a Bigot. Finally, it isn t good for making policy decisions because e goal of winning takes precedence over any possible policy ramifications. In e context of all of is people have asked me to clarify e Church s position on gay marriage or What does e Bible or Church say? Most of e people who have asked me is already have eir minds made up but ask so at I can convince e oer side at ey are right. For ose of you who want e straight forward answer, it is really pretty simple and it comes in two parts: 1. The Church and e Bible don t sanction homosexual marriage. 2. Homosexual persons are to be treated wi e highest respect and dignity. What I wrote above is a problem for many. How can it be at e Bible and e Church don t sanction homosexual marriage and at e same time profess at homosexual persons be treated wi e highest respect and dignity? Isn t equality and freedom part of at respect and dignity? How will e Supreme Court decision affect religious policies? What about heal coverage, rights of visitation, tax laws, discrimination? How will religious church, school, and hospital policies be affected? Will statements affirming traditional marriage be labeled hate speech? The problem I see now is at we are not well situated to even discuss ese areas as a church or as a country. The shouting matches continue. As a pastor and a Christian, I am really not interested in e shouting matches. One ing I ve learned over e years is at Jesus loved his people (all people) infinitely while at e same time holding up morals and values higher an anyone really wants to admit. No one lives up to e full teaching of Jesus myself included. Nevereless, we are called to live by it and promote it as we strive toward being perfect as your heavenly Faer is perfect (Mt 5:48) or Luke s version, Be compassionate as your heavenly Faer is compassionate (Lk 6:36). Now what? Well, I want to encourage e church to understand e Gospel of Jesus and strive to live according to e fullness of its difficult teachings. This means getting into e deps of e auentic Gospel message and not relying on sound bites and slogans. It means being prayerful and reflective even if at isn t reflected in our media or world. It means going out of our way to be kind and compassionate to everyone wiout exception. It means looking wiin and seeing where we need to change and asking God to help us to step forward in ese ways. It means looking outward and sharing e full message of God s love and tru. It means practicing our fai and asking God to form us more and more in his image as we turn to him as our first point of reference. Finally, Jesus said, I came so at ey might have life and have it abundantly (Jn 10:10). We are all e ey he refers to. Let s do what we can to promote and invite all people to experience e joy filled life he is referring to. The First 1000 Days: A Caolic Culture of Life Initiative Sunday, July 12, Day 119 The 1000 days from conception rough a child s second birday are e most crucial for a child s development. These 1000 days are our best opportunity to shape a healier, more prosperous future for e child. All children. A Child s First Environment Is e Moer s Womb: Many chemicals can cross e placenta & may cause permanent damage to e child. Because children are exposed to environmental hazards at an earlier age an adults are, ey have more time to develop slowly progressing environmentally triggered diseases.
