In October, we will need to re-apply to e McDonald Foundation to reque future contributions. The parish was recently e target of a prote by a group from e Weboro Bapti Church of Topeka, Kansas. This is a notorious group at spreads hateful messages on a variety of topics and organizes protes across e country. St. Michael s parish was recently recognized by e Caolic Sentinel for responding to e situation by offering kindness in e form of coffee and donuts to e proteors. In e spirit of e parables, e parish responded wi e Love of Chri to ose who came to spread hateful messages. 18. A draft of e survey will be presented at e next council meeting in September. We hope to diribute e survey in October of The Council will use e responses to e survey to conduct a SWOT Analysis of e parish Strengs, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This issue will be placed on e agenda for e September meeting as we need to address issues related to e domain name and software licensing. Fr. Mayo also provided an update on e building project. He fir reviewed e hiory of e project which was driven by a need to ructurally reinforce e aging church building and complete a required seismic upgrade. The project became more complicated when we learned at we would need to meet certain code requirements for parking and e church would need to be vacated for a significant period of time to complete e upgrade. An Appreciation Dinner will be held on Augu 6 at 6:00 p.m. for all e parish volunteers, Finance Council members, and Paoral Council members. Next Council Meeting: Scheduled for September 18, Our new Council President, Joe Schreck will lead e meeting. Giselle Rincon and Rosemary Rettig will provide hospitality. Deacon Chuck will provide e Opening Prayer. Submitted by Brigid O Callaghan Member In order to meet e co of e project, e parish would need a development partner. NEEDED SCHEDULER FOR CANDLE HELPERS Wi e dea of Maurine Hill is pa week, we are in need of someone who can create and diribute a quarterly schedule to e helpers who maintain e candle altar by e Pieta. If intereed, please contact e office. Thank you! ~from Fr Dwight Longenecker s blog C.S.Lewis once observed, "How monotonously alike all e great tyrants and conquerors have been: how gloriously different are e saints!" Therese of Lisieux wrote, " All e saints will be indebted to each oer...who knows e joy we shall experience in beholding e glory of e great saints and knowing at by a secret disposition of Providence we have contributed ere unto...and do you not ink at on eir side e great saints, seeing what ey owe to quite little souls, will love em wi an incomparable love? Delightful and surprising will be e friendships found ere--i am sure of it. The favored companion of an apole or a great doctor of e Church will perhaps be a young shepherd lad; and a simple little child may be e intimate friend of a patriarch." I wonder, for inance, what sort of intereing conversation e little shepherd lad of Fatima is having wi John Paul e Great, or what kind of friendship does Therese of Lisieux have wi St Benedict? (If you want to read more about is friendship check out my book, St Benedict and St Therese) What does St Francis, God's little donkey, have to say to St Thomas Aquinas, God's dumb ox? What is brainy Edi Stein saying to poor old not-too-clever Joseph of Cupertino? What got me inking again about e great variety of e saints was e celebration is week of two American saints. I love e way e Holy Spirit introduces us to new friends in heaven at ju e right time. Living in Europe for e la twenty five years I didn't know much about St Elizabe Ann Seton or St John Neumann. After is week I feel like ey are two more friends of e family. As I read e life of St Elizabe all sorts of connections were made. An American who lived in Europe, but was called back to e USA, a parent called to e religious life, a convert from Anglicanism, a teacher and founder of schools. I hope she is praying for me. St John Neumann, called to e priesood in Europe, but no bishop would have him, he comes to e USA and winds up as Bishop of Philadelphia. I grew up in his Diocese it turns out. Also involved in education and work wi young people, I hope he is praying for me. This reveals e mo amazing ing about Caolicism. It is, on e one hand, e universal church. It's power and glory spreads into every land, and ands humbly unbowed in every age. It is a community of fai at retches back 2,000 years, and spans every language, nation and tribe. At e same time, it is a village, a corner shop, a cosy club and a family reunion. Time and again, among e living I have met a new Caolic in a new land or a new place who knows someone I know on e oer side of e globe. They've read e same book or been to e same place or had e same experience. Do you see e underlying unity in a church where a Polish Pope in Rome embraced an Albanian nun who lived in worked in India? John Paul and Moer Theresa were family. The same is true in our life wi e saints. They may be dead here and alive in heaven, but when you meet em and read eir life and get to know em, ey are inant broers and siers. "What!" we cry wi inant recognition, "you too? Why I ought no one else went rough at sorrow or experienced at joy!" "Can it be?" we say wi aonishment, "at is child in France a hundred years ago ought ese same oughts and felt ese same great emotions? or is hermit in a cave in Egypt sang wi e same joy and wept e same tears?
