Even if you are not Caolic, you are mo welcome to join in all e prayers, songs, and actions of e Mass. Holy Communion is e only part of e Mass reserved to Caolics who have spiritually prepared emselves for It non-caolics cannot receive Communion in our church. Good hos inform em before coming to Mass.. At e Sign of Peace, it is cuomary to offer e peace of Chri to ose around you (in is country, it is usually a handshake). Since it is a sign, you are not able to reach someone, don t worry: he or she ill gets e peace of Chri. CATHOLIC ETIQUETTE This may have been poed a year or so ago, but it is helpful to see what expectations might be and where you line up in terms of ecclesiaical etiquette. There is no need to come to Mass in a tuxedo or formal gown. As a sign of respect to God and to ose at Mass wi you, ough, it is cuomary to dress up a bit. As a general rule, one should not wear shorts or come wi bare shoulders, low-cut tops, or skirts above e knees. When a person goes into a new environment (opera house, cinema, nice reaurant) it's not always immediately obvious how one should act and what one should do. Having a handy li of basic etiquette generally makes a person feel much more at Mass. Make sure to turn off your cell phone and set your pager to silent before you go into church. Lower e kneeler on e pew carefully. It s not meant to be a under simulator. Ladies are no longer required to cover eir heads in is country, but gentlemen are expected to remove eir hats at e door. Since e church is a house of prayer, one should avoid lengy or loud conversations. If you need to speak to someone, do so in a lowered voice, even if Mass is not going on. Mo churches have a veibule (sometimes called a gaering space or narex ) where one is able to converse. In American churches, one does not typically bring animals in. Scoot into e pew as far as you can. This makes it easier for oers to take a seat as ey arrive. Church is certainly an appropriate place for children. If yours is prone to make lots of noise, sit toward e rear so at you can take him out if he begins to make a scene. Many churches provide a crying room where one can take crying children for brief periods. It is poor manners to chew gum in church. To go up to Communion wi gum in one's mou is mind-bogglingly poor manners (and arguably a violation of e Communion fa). Coffee and sweet rolls are often served in parish halls after Masses, but it is inappropriate to eat em in e church itself. It's also inappropriate to bring oer food or drinks into church, even if one expects e Mass to be raer long.
