PARISH NEWS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR PARISH SAFETY COMMITTEE: St. Michael parish is establishing an onsite safety committee, to meet at least quarterly during office hours. We need at least two volunteers to serve wi an equal number of employer-selected members. Safety Committee responsibilities include: developing safety procedures, performing quarterly workplace inspections, establishing accident investigation procedures, evaluating all accident & incident investigation reports, & making safety committee meeting minutes available to all employees. 4 ALWAYS WANTED ONE? YAMAHA CLAVINOVA The parish has for sale a Yamaha Clavinova musical machine. This is e one we used in church for Masses until we were able to secure e lovely Rogers organ we have now. It functions as a piano, organ, harpsichord, guitar, etc. It will do just about everying short of doing dishes! It is a steal at $1,000! It s in superb shape! Mr. James Herrera On May 19, 2012, at St. Mary s Caedral our own James Herrera will be ordained a Deacon and made a cleric of e Roman Church. His ordination to Priesood will be in We ll have more details later, but James wanted us to let you know so at you can plan on being ere if you would like. We are very proud of him and look forward to his being Deacon of e Mass on Sunday, May 20. God bless and keep him! PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES Meeting of February 18, 2012 Members Present: Faer James Mayo, Deacon Chuck Amsberry,, Christine Ro, Joe Schreck, Rosemary Rettig, Vincent Hayes,Brigid O Callaghan, Fr, Lucas Laborde, Absent: Meghan Jackson, Helen Heller, Ellen Fargas, Emily Kunkel, Giselle Rincon, Preliminary: The meeting was called to order by Pastoral Council President, Brigid O Callaghan. The council members provided a quick introduction for e newest council member Vincent Hayes. The Minutes of e January st 21 meeting were reviewed and approved as submitted. STAFF REPORTS Pastor s Comments Fr. James Mayo The May 19 Council meeting was re-scheduled to May 12 due to e ordination to e diaconate of our seminarian, James Herrera on e 19 at St. Mary s Caedral in NW Portland by Archbishop Vlazny. The Archbishop Capital campaign preliminary results for St. Michael s contribution is very positive, by achieving nearly $150,000 of $300,000 goal for is campaign. Pastoral Associate s Report - Deacon Chuck Amsberry Deacon Chuck updated e council on e RCIA Ministry, and e parish Lenten activities beginning on Ash Wednesday. The Council will sponsor e March 21 st stations of e cross and a sign-up sheet was passed around to council members to sign up for providing a simple soup st supper following e stations of e cross on March 21.. Campus Minister s Report There was a very good start of Fragua III, wi 25 new students coming wi e current team of 15 students. This program will continue for 9 Tuesday evenings and includes a weekend retreat on February Also it is notewory at ere are now 10 Campus Ministry students who volunteer to help Rosemary Rettig s Social Services Ministry to provide lunch and food boxes for e poor. Social Services Report Rosemary Rettig Social Services provided e most sack lunches ever recorded in January. The St. Michael s food service passed The Oregon Food Bank annual site visit. The purchase price of e new van is $14,000, and e Food Bank offered to underwrite a proportion of e cost of e van. This may result in no more OFB delivery of food to St. Michael s. The van will now be used to pick up food at e OFB. The families of St. Therese s School in NE Portland gaer and deliver jars of peanut butter and loaves of bread. This support from e families of St. Therese s School and Parish are very much appreciated. KKIOR/Indonesian Community Report The next KKIOR rd Mass schedule remains once a mon on every 3 Sunday of e mon. There will be an attempt to contact oer parishes to help increase awareness of is Indonesian Caolic Mass at St. Michael s in Portland Oregon. Music Coordinator s Report All e musicians from each of e Masses are helping e parish learn e changes in e Heritage Mass Music. Meghan is now planning for e upcoming Easter and Lenten music for all Masses. OLD BUSINESS Building Project Q and A document. This document is almost complete. The document will be available via e St. Michael s web site and in e bulletin.

5 Archbishop s Endowment as stated in e Pastor s comments, preliminary results are very good wi St. Michael s parishioners nearing 50% for e $300,000 goal. NEW BUSINESS The Annual Caolic Appeal (ACA) for 2012 is beginning is weekend. All Masses are set to see a video at will describe is year s Annual Appeal from e Archdiocese of Western Oregon. Lenten Stations of e Cross- Pastoral Council to host on March 21, 2012 St. Joseph s Table Dinner - Set for Friday, March 16 in Balestra Hall at 6:30 P.M. This dinner is a charity dinner designed to gain funds for our Social Ministry. More coming later in e bulletin. Next Council Meeting: Scheduled for March 17, 9 AM. Giselle Rincon will provide e Opening Prayer. Rosemary Rettig will serve as e Secretary for e meeting and Christine Ro will provide hospitality. FINANCE COUNCIL MINUTES MEETING OF FEBRUARY 16, 2012 Present: Pastor Faer James Mayo, Chair Ryan Courtney, Gerry Mildner, Dan Dziuba, Jay Johnson, Dave McDermott, Andrea Baffaro, Erick Dennis, Patty McIntyre, Parish Bookkeeper/Secretary Jerri Schultz and Council Secretary Bud Caro. Preliminary: The meeting was opened 6:30 PM wi a Spanish prayer by Faer Mayo. Jay Johnson. Minutes: The Minutes of e January 19, 2012 meeting were approved.

6 Financial Matters: The Council reviewed e January financials presented by Jerri Schultz. Notice was taken at Offertory Collections remain a little ahead of Budget for e fiscal year. Year to Date Expenses continue run lower an Budget. Again e Council and Fr. Mayo are very grateful for parishioners continued generous support! Investment Income for e mon was significantly high recognizing e recovery of e stock and bond markets. Faer Mayo reported at e contributions to e Archbishop s Endowment Fund were very generous and he expresses his appreciation to e Parish. The specific results will be published in e weekly bulletin. Dave reported at he has located a used 12-passenger van to be used to pick-up food for e Social Ministry Program. He expects to put it rough a trial run Monday and, if all goes well, e Parish will purchase it for about $14,000. Faer Mayo said at e Oregon Food Bank has offered to make a cash donation toward e purchase. The Council approved acceptance of e offer. Dave will investigate e market for e sale of e existing van and attempt to sell it for e most possible. Pastor s Comments: Faer Mayo said at is weekend we kickoff e Annual Caolic Appeal. A video presentation will be made at each Mass. Our Newman Center s students are shown as one of e beneficiaries of e Appeal. Building Project: Faer Mayo reported at e search for a Development Director has been successful wi e employment of Connor Savage. He is a full time employee and will report to Faer Mayo. Patty McIntyre and Cheryl Scarcelli will also have some supervision responsibility. Connor s office is in e Conference Room. The Council en began a lengy discussion regarding e Fund Raising schedule. It was suggested at Commitment Sunday be scheduled for early September, after school vacation. Announcements to e Parish on e final Plan could begin a week after Easter. Major Gift fund meetings could be scheduled to occur in May and ereafter. Gerry reported on a recent suggestion to place e two large paintings, now on each side of e altar, in e Reconciliation Room now planned to be in e bell tower. They would be visible from some of e pews. Faer Mayo said at e Building Committee auorized an expenditure of $3,500 for a more certain figure for e construction cost of e renovation. At present we have only standard figures and need costs based on our local economy, etc. Gerry said e Transition Committee has been inactive awaiting furer information on when construction will commence. He expects e next meeting will be a week or so from now. Oer Business: A suggestion was made to draft an article for publication on e partnership of St. Michael and St. Mary s for e general public s information. Submitted by Bud Caro, Secretary TIPS FOR MAKING A GOOD CONFESSION From Fr. John Zuhlsdorf s Blog on making a good confession. Our Lenten Penance Service is coming up soon and is might be helpful to some of you. We should 1) examine our consciences regularly and oroughly; 2) wait our turn in line patiently; 3) come at e time confessions are scheduled, not a few minutes before ey are to end; 4) speak distinctly but never so loudly at we might be overheard; 5) state our sins clearly and briefly wiout rambling; 6) confess all mortal sins in number and kind; 7) listen carefully to e advice e priest gives; 8) confess our own sins and not someone else s; 9) carefully listen to and remember e penance and be sure to understand it; 10) use a regular formula for confession so at it is familiar and comfortable; 11) never be afraid to say someing embarrassing just say it; 12) never worry at e priest inks we are jerks. he is usually impressed by our courage; 13) never fear at e priest will not keep our confession secret he is bound by e Seal; 14) never confess tendencies or struggles just sins; 15) never leave e confessional before e priest has finished giving absolution; 16) memorize an Act of Contrition; 17) answer e priest s questions briefly if he asks for a clarification; 18) ask questions if we can t understand what he means when he tells us someing; 19) keep in mind at sometimes priests can have bad days just like we do; 20) remember at priests must go to confession too

This dinner helps provide funding for our Social Ministry under Rosemary Rettig and her many volunteers loving care! It begins wi cocktails at 6:30 wi e Mayfield Five providing live jazz music for our enjoyment. During dinner, Steve and Betty Moss will provide classical guitar and voice to help us gently dine. Please mark your calendars...only 120 seats! The cost is $15/person or $25/couple. We ask you to telephone or Jerri, our parish secretary, if you are attending and how many will be wi you. You can pay at e door. Wi e dinner cost comes two tickets for drinks. Additional drinks are for $3 each. You may have access to purchase food cheaper an we can, so we will take e equivalent of $15 or $25 in food and case goods. Rosemary has indicated at e following items and sizes are needed.
