5 SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT By His Eminence, Timoy Cardinal Dolan Archbishop Archdiocese of New York Visiting Wi Immigrant Children Immigrant children coming into is country have been e subject of much attention, debate and, fortunately, great compassion by many especially our Caolic charitable agencies and parishes. For e most part, ey are young people, wiout eir parents, who are arriving in is country seeking a refuge from poverty or gang violence. I was privileged today to travel to Norern Westchester and celebrate Mass for a group of ese young people, to meet wi em, and learn a little more about eir circumstances and see where ey are temporarily staying until ey can be reunited, most often wi eir family members. Former Mayor Ed Koch once told me, Two women welcomed e immigrants to New York: Lady Liberty and Moer Church. And he was right. I just returned from a brief trip to Ireland, and people ere still talk gratefully of e welcome given to so many Irish refugees during e great famine of e 19 Century. We are called upon again today to care for a new group of immigrants, only is time e immigrants are teenagers or younger. Caring for e downtrodden, e outcast, e stranger among us, is part of our call as Caolics, and we here in e Archdiocese of New York have been doing just at for more an 200 years. Lincoln Hall, for instance, where I celebrated Mass is morning, began as a residential treatment center back in 1863 to care for orphans left destitute after e Civil War. The Archdiocese of New York has a long and proud tradition of caring for newcomers to our country. Now, togeer, we are facing anoer crisis, one of children fleeing violence and risking eir lives wi e hope of finding family and shelter here. Pope Francis said it so well, late last mon, when he reminded us at is humanitarian emergency requires, as a first urgent measure, ese children be welcomed and protected. And at is just what Caolic Charities, parishes, professionals and volunteers roughout e country are doing. At Lincoln Hall and in similar residences children receive e temporary housing, education, heal, and legal support ey need to survive and begin to re-establish eir lives. Immigration is not a new issue. I have been very much preoccupied wi e vulnerability of our immigrants and refugees because I meet em everywhere I go roughout our archdiocese: men, women, and children so grateful to be in America, so searching to find a home here, so eager to work, settle down, and become part of a nation at has traditionally welcomed and embraced e immigrant. I am grateful to ose political leaders on bo sides of e aisle, people like Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Peter King, who have led e fight for comprehensive immigration reform. I am more an frustrated at too much partisan and self-interest politics up to is point has trumped e common good of our country. But. I am not giving up hope, nor e struggle. I continue to work and pray for e type of immigration reform our country needs to remain strong. But ese young people can t wait for immigration reform. As Pope Francis rightly points out, is is a humanitarian emergency, and however ey got here, ese young people must be cared fornow. Politicians and pundits might argue about how best to handle is humanitarian crisis. For us, e answer is simple anks to guidance Jesus gave us more an 2,000 years ago: Whoever welcomes a little child like is in my name welcomes me. NORA SCHRECK, PRAYER MINISTRY prayer@stmichaelportland.org If you have a need for which you d like prayer, please Nora at e address above. She and her prayer partners love praying for you!
