PARISH PRAYERS FOR OUR CHURCH BUILDING PROJECT We are working and praying to be able to pull our building permits by February 17, 2017, and begin restoring and protecting our dear parish church. We beg Jesus mother, Mary, and St. Michael the Archangel to help us. We invite each member of our parish family to ask God s help to get this project started. Please pray daily the St. Michael the Archangel prayer and at least one Hail Mary, up to the whole rosary. Share the prayer by having each member of the family take a day. Also, as a parish family at each of our weekend Masses, we will pray the St. Michael the Archangel Prayer for Protection and one Ave Maria/Hail Mary. Please pray with us! TRIVIA ON THE 19 NEW CARDINALS Following the Consistory of November 19 th, the College of Cardinals consists of 228 members, 121 of whom are able to participate in a conclave to elect a new Pope. Most of these electors also have duties in the Roman Curia. Of the 17 cardinals created, 13 are electors. In his three consistories, Pope Francis has now created 55 living cardinals. The majority of cardinals alive today, 95, were created by Pope St. John Paul II. Among these is Pope Francis himself. Pope Benedict XVI has created 78 living cardinals, and there are two cardinals still alive from the pontificate of Blessed Pope Paul VI (one of whom is the Pope emeritus). The youngest cardinal, at 49, is Dieudonné Nzapalainga, the archbishop of Bangui, who was created by Pope Francis yesterday. The oldest is José de Jesús Pimiento Rodriguez, the 97-year-old Archbishop emeritus of Manizales. He was also created by Pope Francis in the consistory of The longest serving cardinal is Paolo Evaristo Arns, Archbishop emeritus of São Paulo. He was created in 1973, and as the most senior cardinal-priest he has the function of proto-priest. The most senior cardinal, as decided by rank in the College and date of creation, is the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Angelo Sodano. Most junior are the three cardinal-deacons created yesterday, Cardinals Mario Zenari, Kevin Farrell and Ernest Simoni. The country with the largest number of cardinals remains Italy. 46 cardinals, including 25 electors, call that country home. This is followed by the United States (18 cardinals), Spain (12), Brazil (11), Germany (10), France (9), Mexico (6), India (5), Poland (5), and Argentina, Colombia and the Philippines (4 each). While Europe is still overrepresented in the College of Cardinals, other continents are catching up. The Americas have 62 cardinals between them, and Africa and Asia both have 24. The vast majority of cardinal electors, 72 of them, are archbishops (metropolitan or otherwise) of an archdiocese somewhere in the world. Eight electors are retired archbishops. There are six regular bishops among the electors, two patriarchs, one nuncio and 31 work in the Roman Curia. A final cardinal elector is retired Curia member. 5 Deacon Chuck states, Philip is one of the most dependable helpers. He also added, Philip does many things for others, especially the elderly. He truly is an angel a kind helper committed until the job is done well. We are thankful for all you do for Saint Michael s, Philip - God bless you always! PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL DECEMBER S PARISH ANGEL Philip Austin has been a parishioner for 45 years; has grown and changed with the parish and is dubbed a Saint Michael s historian! He feels the smaller congregation has a family feel, providing better opportunities to get to know other parishioners. He loves the Povey stained glass in our church and their history as well. He would love to talk about the windows if anyone is interested! Philip has a couple thousand books mostly on architectural history and history in general as this has been a passion of his throughout his life. He also has an interest in antique doorknobs and has attended several national conventions for antique doorknob lovers and collectors! There is a convention for everyone! Most impressive is Philip s participation in the Saint Michael s community. A member of the defunct Altar Guild, he is currently a Eucharistic Minister, Usher, and opens and closes Saint Michael s at Saint Mary s on Sundays! For those who enjoy Coffee & Donuts, without Philip we would have no coffee to drink! He brings it up to the Faculty Room for us to enjoy! Philip cleans storm drains around Saint Michael s, replaces outside light bulbs & picks up trash in the parking lot. He regularly takes communion to the homebound and recently bought new flickering candles for the altar! Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
