The Epiphany of the Lord Today s readings give us beautiful imagery along with the familiar story of the Magi. A line in the gospel that could be easily missed comes at the end of the Gospel: they departed for their country by another way. We might assume that because of their encounter with Christ, they realized that they needed to take another way, follow a new path forward. Do we need to take another path, today, to grow closer to the Lord? A trip is always better with a good travelling companion is there someone you can invite to walk with you another way, the way of sacraments and prayer. 3 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Ministry Help: May the Lord give us His peace. I hope you all had a blessed New Year celebration. It was great to see so many of you at the New Year s Masses, honoring our Blessed Mother in her unique role as Mother of God. What a great way to begin the New Year! As I have said, one of my dreams for our Collaborative family is that we would be a place where everyone knows your name (thank you to Cheers). It speaks of a community of believers, animated by the joy of the Gospel, who welcomes the stranger, recognizes the dignity of each person, and cares for their neighbor. Every weekend we have visitors joining our parish family at the table of the Word and the Eucharist. Some may be joining us from within the Collaborative while others may be visiting from another parish. I am sure there are many who are not affiliated with a parish and may even feel uncomfortable coming into our church. Regardless of the circumstances, we have an opportunity to welcome the stranger and create an environment where people feel acknowledged, affirmed and loved. Ministry of Usher: The role of being an usher is an important part of the Saturday/Sunday Mass experience at Saint Joseph s. We are in need of volunteers who would be willing to greet and welcome parishioners and guests, and assist with the offertory collection. Ideally this would be a monthly rotation and you would be able to serve at the Mass you regularly attend. If you are interested, there is a sign up sheet at the rear of the church, or your could contact the parish offices. Thank you for your consideration. St. Joseph s Holy Name Society is looking for new members in Like the little drummer boy, each of us have skills, graces and abilities given to use in our daily lives. By joining our group of dedicated men of the parish, you re able to share your gifts with many people while receiving the joy of helping others. 4 JANUARY 6, 2019 Now more than ever, our priests, seminarians and those contemplating the call to serve Our Lord need our prayers. Here a St Joseph Parish we have a way for you to do your part to support these men who have proven to be our good shepherds and those in training or contemplating the call to be a good shepherd. The vocation crucifix is available to be signed out by individuals or families for one week. Take it home and pray the vocation prayer daily. The sign up sheet is in the entrance of the church. The process is easy. Choose your week, sign the sheet. When your week arrives pick up the crucifix in the sacristy when you come to mass. Please return the crucifix to the sacristy before the 4 pm mass on Saturday so it will be available for the next person. Do you know of anyone, maybe yourself, who may be interested in becoming a Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is designed for non-catholics who may be interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and perhaps becoming a Catholic, by preparing for and receiving the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Adults who were baptized as Roman Catholics, but did not receive further catechetical formation, and consequently did not receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist are also candidates for this program. We are happy to say that we already have four adults who have registered! For more information, contact Fr. Matt ( ) ST. JOSEPH FOOD PANTRY: NEW HOURS: The pantry is open on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 7:30PM for our neighbors in need (located in rectory conference room). Donations may be brought to Mass on Saturday/Sunday. Thank you for your support with all non-perishable food items and cash donations. Winter Weather Policy ALL PARISH ACTIVITIES & MASSES will be cancelled for the day/evening whenever there are Quincy School cancellations (except for funerals which might be rescheduled). This will allow for the safety of parishioners and parking lot snow removal.

5 JANUARY 6, 2019 EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS "The Story of the Other Wise Man" by Henry Van Dyke was first published in It tells the fictional story of Artaban, a fourth wise man who began a journey to visit Jesus, the newborn King. Unlike his fellow Magi, he failed to make it there for the birth of Jesus because he kept pausing to help various people in need. In fact, it took him about 33 years of searching before his quest comes to an abrupt end when he is hit in the head with a falling roof shingle. His final breath takes place in Jerusalem near the place where Jesus is being crucified. As he lies dying, he hears the voice of Jesus telling him that the gifts he has given all along the way to "the least of these" he has actually given to Jesus himself. If you have never read this story or seen the made-for-television movie based on the tale, you really should seek it out. It is a story that reminds us of a profound truth: Jesus himself rests in the lives of all those around us in need. In the story, it was the wise man's constant response to a stewardship call that prevented him from getting where he wanted to go. In the end, where he needed to go was more significant than where he thought he should go. If we live lives of generosity and graciousness, we may find ourselves on constant detours from the road on which we are traveling. It is in the detours and the unexpected circumstances of our journey that often times we find our true purpose in life. We think God is somewhere we must travel to, when in reality, God is closer than we think in the least likely of places. -- Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
