4 WHAT IS NEEDED What is Needed? is from a blog by e parish prie of St. Mary Magdalene Church in Brighton, England, Faer Raymond Burke. It gave me pause to ink about various policies, requirements, etc. we have here at St. Michael s and also some ings wi regard to e homeless we feed. Faer Mayo - Paor As part of my own Year of Fai efforts, to boo my fai as much anyone else's, I have decided to go down to our soup run a bit more often is year. We had about forty ere ere e oer night, practically all men. We try not to be like Evangelical Chriians and alough e food is made wi a great deal of prayer and devotion, we don't attach any "devotional element" to giving out food. We work on to simple premise: Chri tells us to feed e hungry, we feed. It is simple obedience to Jesus' words. Many of ose who come do not know who we are or why my parishioners do it. When I am ere many of e men k/now me from e Church door, or having come to my house, so it is quite easy to talk a bit about God to individuals, but more especially because living on e reets brings em into direct contact wi Divine Providence. They want to talk for many prayer is pretty conant, even if it is: God keep me from being knifed tonight or don't let me be lonely or don't let arve or freeze to dea. Their own hunger witnesses to all kinds of oer hungers: for God ultimately, but also for affection, kindness, for a warm dry place to spend e night and for drink and drugs and for sex too. From time to time someone wants to be baptised. There is no way mo could come along to an RCIA course or even for regular inruction, even e retention of much catechesis is raer difficult. For many it would be possible to communicate e doctrine of e Trinity pretty easily in terms of relationship because at is what ey are really hungering for; ultimately to know God as loving Faer. Forgiveness too ey underand, being "sorry" is very much part of eir lives, as is forgiving ose who abuse, and dehumanise em. "Sin" is a bit difficult, extremes of poverty, like extremes of weal give its own gloss to underanding Jesus' teaching and brings wi it its own invincible ignorance. The big problem is practice, and having regularity in lives at are often disordered by low level crime, psychiatric illness and social problems which are rooted, often, in dysfunctional childhoods. As far as desire for union wi God in is concerned it is ere but my difficulty is eir ability to fit into e Church and its sacramental ructures. What does e Church do for e man who kneels and prays in e gutter, who wants what e sacraments can give but are always going to be out of ep wi e Church? It is at old Caolic ing of what is e minimum of Chriian practice, knowledge and behaviour necessary to receive be part of e Church's sacramental life. In many RCIA groups it is often ju a matter of turning-up for e course, and being able to fill-in e forms, raer an anyone making a judgement about e particular candidate having a deep desire for Chri FINANCE COUNCIL MINUTES Meeting of October 18, 2012 Present: Paor Faer James Mayo, Chair Erick Dennis, Dave McDermott, Andrea Baffaro, Len Michon, Gary Haven, Development Director Connor Savage, and Council Secretary Bud Caro. Excused: Jay Johnson, Patty McIntyre, Bookkeeper Jackie Wheatley, Preliminary: The meeting was opened 6:30 PM wi grace and e Campaign Prayer led by Faer Mayo. Erick Dennis provided dinner. Minutes: The Minutes of e September 20, 2012 meeting were approved. Financial Matters: The Council reviewed e September Year-to-Date Financial Statements. Note was taken at Offertory Collections and Oer Income items were less an expected in e Budget. Expenses are tracking e Budget. As a result funds were taken from Savings Invements to meet e cash shortfall. The Council discussed e need to communicate ese facts to e Parish.

5 Faer mentioned at e Parish contributions to e Bishop s Annual Appeal are 76% of e Goal and e contributions to e Bishop s Endowment Fund are 41% of e Goal. In prior years e Parish has met e Appeal Goal before year end and he anticipates e same is year. Council Membership: Faer announced at Gerry Mildner has resigned from e Finance Council due to e necessary demands of e Building Project and Transitions Committee he chairs. Faer has appointed Charlie Makinney to take Gerry s place. Gerry s input to is Council has been mo helpful and will be missed. The Council expresses its anks for his help over e years. Paor s Comments: Faer said at e Parish has entered into a lease wi e St. John Society for e property e Society recently purchased for an off-site Newman Center facility. The lease is for $1.00 for e fir year. The parish s co for e annual lease will continue to be $1.00, but will be liable for e water, electricity and gas. Based on e pa ree years usage, ese are eimated to be around $3,000 per year. St. Michael Foundation: Bud gave an update on e current inveigation into e need for e continued operation of e Hioric Foundation. Wiout anticipated contributions in e future, it may be proper to dissolve e Foundation. TUESDAYS IN THE HALL: Explore e essentials of e Caolic Fai! NEWMAN WEEKDAY MASS: Every Thursday at 7 P.M. ere is Mass especially for e Newman community. Join us for Mass, and for an hour of adoration/confessions beforehand, 6 pm in e church. NEWMAN CENTER MOVED: We have moved Campus Miniry to 926 SW Clifton Street (on e oer side of I-405 near SW Broadway), to accommodate e grow of e miniry. Soon we ll hold an open house and invite parishioners to look at is new venture in our parish life. Students will ill return to St. Michael s for Mass on Thursdays and Fragua on Tuesdays. Building Project: The Transition Committee continues to research facilities available for our use during e conruction phase. Fund Raising Campaign: Connor reviewed DSG s summary report of e Interviews and e In-Pew Survey. The results are outanding. The Parish met or exceeded all e goals expected by DSG rough its experience in Pre-Campaign work. The Council recognizes e need to keep up is momentum. A report will be given to e Parish on e weekend of October The Advance Phase will begin during November and e plan is to reach our Total Goal before e summer of Oer Business: None. Due to Faer Mayo being gone in early November, e next scheduled meeting is Thursday, November 29, 2012, in e Parish Conference Room and will be hoed by Jay Johnson.
