PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 19, 2013, MEETING Members Present: Faer James Mayo, Joe Schreck, Brigid O Callaghan, Sharon Webster, Vincent Hayes, Rosemary Rettig, Christina Self, Fr. Maximo Stock, Bernard Reksopuro, Molly Mannheimer. Members Absent:, Deacon Chuck Amsberry and Emily Kunkel. Preliminary: The meeting was called to order by Council President, Vincent Hayes and e Morning Prayer was offered by Sharon Webster. A new member, Molly Mannheimer, was welcomed by e Council. Pastor s Comments - Deacon Chuck will be back from nd vacation and in his office on Tuesday, October 22. Fr. Mayo commented at new members are needed in every ministry. The concern is how to recruit new members wiout always asking e same individuals. There is a concern at a small number of individuals are overburdened by requests to serve ministry requests. The issue facing e council is how to foster more connections between parishioner at will result in increased involvement by parishioners. The following list are possible areas to explore furer: One idea came from Rosemary regarding Social Ministry s Monday volunteer group. This group has been very involved wi social services and may be willing to volunteer to join oer groups of e parish. Recommendation to ask e Time, Talent & Treasure forms to be filled out at Mass in order to foster new individuals to join Parish ministries. Use e existing gaerings, i.e. Coffee and Donuts, dinner gaerings, etc. to highlight parish needs, and parish ministries at are in need of volunteers. RCIA members are good source for new volunteers. Fr Mayo could ask e existing volunteers to identify emselves at parish functions and Mass so oer parishioners can approach existing volunteers for Q &A and gain commitments. Social Services Report Need new Laundry person: Rosemary needs a volunteer to do e kitchen laundry each week. A notice will be added to e Mass bulletin. Oer volunteers needed: Need a kitchen cleaning crew to do monly maintenance on our kitchen. Also need soup chefs to prepare soups ahead of time to be reheated on a weekday morning. rd KKIOR/Indonesian Community Report 3 Sunday of e mon, October 20, 2013 at 2 P.M. Celebrant is Fr. Dominic Mntenga, AJ. They are looking for a retreat house to rent for e end of e year. Music Coordinator s Report There was discussion about trying to add different musical styles, etc. at e Noon Mass. Music volunteers needed to add eir music talent at Mass. Ask St. Mary s students to contribute eir music talent at Mass.
6 NEW BUSINESS Building Project: As of October, we have collected approximately $4,400,000 of e $6,300,000 goal. Preparation of drawings is continuing now at e final decisions on design have been reached. The Project Team is reviewing how to phase e project into separate phases given e shortage of funds to complete e whole project. By phasing we can save $700,000 from e final budget by segmenting certain parts of new construction. St. Michael s Budget: Due to a job transfer, we lost a very donor and wi e summer slump, e parish is down about 5% in its weekly income. The Finance Council will monitor is and if income doesn t come up, it will have to look at where cuts can be made. St. Michael s Website: A new parish website is being created by a small group of parishioners. We hope to st debut it on December 1. We urge parishioners to visit e website and our parish Facebook page. Sharon mentioned to use pictures and make e volunteers known and to highlight key happenings. Next Council Meeting: Scheduled for November 16, 9 AM. Hospitality will be provided by Joe Schreck and Rosemary will be e Scribe, and Brigid O Callaghan will to e Opening Prayer. Submitted by Joe Schreck FROM THE PASTOR Each week you see in e report on gifts to our parish and in e weekly update of our Social Ministry Coordinator, Rosemary Retting. It is natural to wonder what people ink whom we help here wi food and oer ways to take care of eir needs. Are ey grateful, why do we do is here when may it could be done elsewhere, etc. On Tuesday morning last week, I received e following from a man whom we helped here recently wi food boxes. It made me proud of all of you ose who daily prepare food and food boxes, of Rosemary, of all our benefactors parishioners, Foundations, people who walk by and give us $100, etc, etc. We seek to do Christ s work and hope He will remember what we do. May God bless is gentleman who was kind enough to let us know of his gratitude and all ose who help us be Christ here in e Sou Waterfront. Dear Faer Mayo, My name is (Name removed). I'm writing to tell you how pleased and grateful I am for e food bank at Saint Michael e Archangel Church. For e last few years, I've been coming once a mon. I've always been treated kindly and tactfully and e volunteers have always shown patience wi me over my special dietary needs. The food bank supplies me wi enough food to make my small food budget stretch to cover e whole mon. I especially appreciate e surprises I receive, in e nature of spices, oil, dessert, etc. These ings are so expensive at e store, I used to go wiout. The St. Michael's food bank has allowed me to eat healier food and has improved my quality of life. I look forward to my visit each mon. I'm not e kind of person at dishes out compliments right and left, but you and your staff and parishioners are doing a good job and deserve honest anks for helping me and e oer folks out. I hope you will pass my gratitude along to your staff and volunteers. Your work and eirs is much appreciated. Sincerely, (Name removed)
