3 Liturgy Weekly Reflections The Exaltation of the Holy Cross September 14, 2014 "Up" and "down" are words that capture seeming contradictions in this gospel and on this feast. The space between up and down, heaven and earth, divinity and humanity is closed by the obedience, self-emptying, and fidelity of the Son. This feast day celebrates that on the cross the Son overcomes these contradictions. We ourselves are drawn into the mystery of the cross as exaltation by our belief in the Son. Our believing bridges the space between God and us, between Life and death, between being saved or perishing. The words "up" and "down" in the gospel point to heaven and earth, which we tend to think of as places. The mystery of this feast and this gospel move us beyond the notion of place to relationship, choice, belief, salvation. How much do we believe? Nicodemus had to take a risk in going to meet Jesus. How did it turn out for him? Are you willing to take risks in your life? Discuss Pope Francis' statements about the meaning of suffering and evil: Looking at Jesus in his passion, we see as in a mirror also the suffering of all humanity and find the divine answer to the mystery of evil, of suffering, of death, and Jesus takes all this evil, all this suffering, upon himself. Jesus permits that evil crosses the line with him, and takes it upon himself to conquer it. Referring to "the mystery of the great humility of God, "Pope Francis observed that: really, we don't have many explanations; it's a puzzling mystery. 'For God has so loved the world that he gave his only Son.' Pope Francis general audience address Vatican City, Apr 16, 2014 Next weeks Readings 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time September 21, 2014 First Reading Isaiah 55:6-9 The ways and thoughts of God are above our own. Psalm 145 The Lord is near to all who call upon him. Second Reading Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a Saint Paul rejoices that to live is Christ and to die is to gain. Gospel Matthew 20:1-16a The last will be first, and the first will be last. Out Gospel today is the well-known parable of the workers in the vineyard, who each receive a full day s pay even though some worked far less. Sometimes in the business of our lives we lose sight of how generous God has been to us. Let us listen now and learn again about a God whose ways are high above our own. Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. Unless otherwise noted, all Masses are on Saturday mornings at 10:30 am. Holyrood ~ 205- NE 205th St Shoreline, WA October 4, 2014 Calvary ~ th Ave NE Seattle, WA September 13, 2014 October 11, 2014

4 Parish Life Tired of just sitting in the pew? Feel like you could do more to help the human race? St. John has many ministries that could use an extra hand or two. We hope everyone had a great Summer. if any one is looking for a volunteer opportunity for the upcoming year we could use you for the Noel House overflow shelter held every weekend at St John School Mezzanine. This ministry is great for working families to fulfill those volunteer hours on a weekend. We are in need of women volunteers to spend the night every Saturday and Sunday to chaperon our guests from Noel House homeless shelter. Volunteer 2 to 3 times between September and June. We also need volunteers (dads welcome) to drive the St John bus to pick up and return the guests from the downtown shelter. Four shifts available, about a 45 minute commitment. If your daughter needs service hours she is welcome if you agree to volunteer too ( 3 time commitment between September and June) Please contact me for more information at marytkearney@comcast.net or come to our shelter wine and appetizer party on October 5th at 5pm at Egan Mezzanine. No obligation just come and learn more about the shelter and meet some new people and bring a friend. Parish office still needs money counters. This ministry is normally on Mondays, start time 9am. Our group is friendly and could sure use some help. If interested, please call Evie at the parish office. 5 Please join us in thanking Steve Berlage for 30 years of service to our St John Community. Steve has been a dedicated part of our St John family. Steve always gave generously of his time, and his many gifts on the job, as well as, in our community. At this time in his life, Steve needs to be available to redirect his priorities to provide both time and energy to allow him to support his father and family. Steve & his family are greatly appreciative of all the prayers for their family. As a beloved member of our St John Family, we understand that many of you will want to reach out to Steve during this difficult time. Steve has asked us to continue to respect his time with his family. Asking that all correspondence, i.e. cards, calls, etc. continue to be delivered to him through the Parish office. We will continue to get your cards/letters/information to him, and allow Steve to contact you as he has time. We would like to schedule a going away Mass with a cake at Coffee and donuts. However Steve, at this point, is not able to confirm a date that he would be in Seattle to attend. So please watch for this sometime in the future.

Stewardship A Disciples Response Even though the Lord led them out of Egypt and provided for their every need, the people in today s first reading were complaining and ungrateful. Does my stewardship of God s gifts show that I know from Whom they came and am grateful? Electronic St John s is easy! You can donate from your Smart phone! St John the Evangelist now offers a mobile version of our online giving page to make it easy for you to give anytime from your smart phone. Simply scan the image you see here using your phone s QR code reader or go to : and locate the online giving page. Or you can donate enter: on your web browser. Virtues in Practice-August Beginning in the Fall of 2014, St. John School students will be participating in the Virtues in Practice, a 3 year program, that focuses on learning and doing a particular Virtue each month for different grade levels. In ; the overall theological virtue (a virtue given to us through Baptism) will be the Year of Faith: Faith Works with a focus on Service. Each month will have a Virtue that helps us to strengthen and grow in our Faith and a Saint that exemplifies that Virtue. Parish members and families are encouraged to learn about the Virtue and the Saint of the Month and then practice the Virtue of the month in your daily living. Suggestions how to live out the Virtue of the Month are available at Evangelization_and_Catechesis There is a Parent Guide and Workbooks for the different grade levels K-8th. These suggested actions can be used by individuals and families to grow deeper in Faith and the Virtue of the Month. Virtue of Month: Faith-believing in God and all He has revealed Saint that Exemplifies Virtue: St. Jerome , Israel Feast: September 30 Do you have a family member or neighbor in or from our parish who would like to stay in touch with the St. John community? We would like to expand our Ministry to the homebound. In addition to taking Communion to these people we would like to reach out with a phone call or greeting card to say hello and that we are thinking about them. We will also need volunteers. Please contact Loretta Fletcher or Marion Johnson if you would be interested, or if you know of someone who might enjoy this type of outreach. Suggested practices to Grow in Virtue of Faith: Is there a Church teaching you don t understand? Look it up in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (at the Vatican website or spend five minutes rereading Sunday s Scripture each night to come to understand God and all He has revealed better. To learn more about the Virtue and Saint this month, see the flyer in this bulletin.
