JOSEPH PARISH, QUINCY MA March 10 ~ First Sunday of Lent Lent is a good time to reorder our lives and to focus our attention on the essentials of our faith. In the second reading today, St. Paul challenges us to make these words come alive: if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Does your way of life profess that Jesus is Lord? Do you believe in the Resurrection? This Lent take some time in prayer asking that your faith be strengthened. Weekly Collection Report February 23 & 24, 2019 Offertory Collection $3, Second Collection $1, Total $4, Lectio Divina is an ancient way to read the scriptures slowly and prayerfully, listening for what the Word of God has to say to each of us personally. Please join us for a time of faith sharing, scripture reading and discussion focused on the Gospels of Lent in the tradition of Lectio Divina. Where: St. Joseph s Rectory When Monday, Mar 11, 18, 25 & Apr 1, 8, 15 from 10-11:30am The Gospel of Luke This is a five week study will look at the Gospel of Luke with a special emphasis on the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus. In our Lenten journey we will examine the themes of mercy and forgiveness as we study the many stories such as the prodigal son and the good Samaritan. Sunday, March 10, First Sunday of Lent At Catholic Charities, we work to serve the marginalized and vulnerable in our community; to provide a hand up when our clients are doing their best for their families. 4 MARCH 10, 2019 BABY BOTTLE BOOMERANG St. Joseph s Sodality will be sponsoring their annual Baby Bottle Boomerang Campaign which helps support Friends of the Unborn in Quincy, an organization that provides a safe haven for unwed mothers and their newborn babies in a loving Christian environment. This event begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6 th and will continue until Palm Sunday, April 14 th. Baby bottles will be given out after all Masses and can be returned (hopefully filled with your donations!) to any of the receptacles placed around the entrances of the church. This is a wonderful opportunity for sacrifice and meeting your Lenten obligations through works of charity. The Vocation Crucifix has been signed out by the following parishioner (s) for the weeks of: March 10th Patty Naughton March 17th March 24th Hunger for Justice Giving Cross St. John's and St. Joseph's is so blessed to have incredible teens who are participating in a heroic retreat this Easter Weekend. The Hunger for Justice Retreat is a 40 hour retreat with hundreds of youth giving up food, phones and shelter spending their entire Triduum in service, prayer and fasting. Our own Pastor, Father Matt has been the spiritual director of this retreat for many years and Father Joseph has led the teens on Holy Saturday in meeting greeting and giving out sandwiches and socks to our homeless brothers and sisters in the streets of Boston. Some of our Youth are participating in AMAZING Holy Week. The preparation for this faith-filled event is well underway and takes support from every member of the parish to make it successful. Along with your prayers, we are asking that you take a small purple cross from the Giving Cross located in the back of the Church. The Giving Cross will work just like the Giving Tree at Christmas. We ask that you chose a cross, take it with you, then purchase and return the donation prior to Sunday, April 14, The youth of our parish will not only fast for the 30 hours, but will sleep in cardboard boxes on the parish hall floor, feed the poor, clean and repair a shelter in need and raise money for the poor; all on their own and without ALL of the comforts of home. They are giving their time, service and faith to so many in need and we ask for your support. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Francesca Alberti. With in our Hunger for Justice Program, we have raised over $700,000 for those in need in third world countries, specifically Ecuador and Haiti. Thank you for your love support and prayers.

5 MARCH 10, 2019 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, May the Lord give us His peace. As I write this article I do so with great joy and gratitude. As you now know, I have asked Francesca Alberti, an amazing high school senior, to coordinate and lead our middle school and high school ministry until she leaves for college in the fall. This past week a family from our Collaborative approached me and said they would like to support this effort and wrote a check out for $10,000. Praise the Lord! I know and believe with all my heart that the Lord has great things in store for our Collaborative Family! As we enter this Lenten Season, may it be a time for all of us to be renewed in the Father s love for us, His children. May the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving help us to know we are loved with an everlasting love, and to allow our hearts to find rest and peace in His; for we know that our hearts will always be restless until they rest in Him. May we claim Jesus as our Lord and Savior, Friend and Brother, and the foundation upon which our lives are built. May we ponder the mystery of His Cross and experience anew how good He is. May this Lent afford us the time to enter into His gaze, and allow our eyes to meet His eyes, and to be drawn into the depths of His heart. May this gaze help us to recognize Him in our neighbor and move us to generously serve our brothers and our sisters.
