Hope Messenger July, 2016 Your Love Letter from Your Pastors: Bob and I moved into a church parsonage in late October the year I served as Interim Pastor at a church in Northeastern Washington. The front and back yards had landscaped flower beds wrapping around the house and garage. No one told us what was planted in the beds. No one seemed to know. However, in the late weeks of May and the early days of June at least forty or fifty bulbs had broken through the thawed ground and it wasn t long before the house where we were living was surrounded by color, bathed in the hues of summer. We came to realize that we lived in a beauty imagined and created by the hearts and hands of others. In this season of vegetable and flower gardens alive and growing, I am reminded of the power of planting seeds. I am reminded of the hope that emerges in the hearts of planters, how diligently farmers and gardeners rake and plow and dig and make way for life. I think about how, in faith and with care and hope, others drop seeds into the earth in joyful anticipation. Most people plant gardens for themselves but some folks, like the anonymous members of that church in Washington, plant their bulbs and seeds for others. It is the same in spiritual gardens. We plant seeds of kindness, faith, hope, joy, love, peace, and patience in our own hearts, hoping to enjoy the bounty of our work and desire. But we also plant seeds in the hearts of others, in temporary places, in organizations, places of worship, in souls of those who may or may not ever know our names. We plant seeds without having to reap the bounty. We plant seeds without needing to watch the garden grow. We plant seeds letting the hope of what might come, the power of what may spring forth, be reason enough to keep planting. Kristin and I have been blessed to be able to enjoy so many fruits that come from the labors of others. We are grateful for the work of previous pastors and lay leaders who planted seeds of service and ministry. We know the garden that blooms today in Mount Hope Church comes from the work and diligence of so many who are no longer with us; and we are grateful. It takes faith to grow a garden you don t get to harvest. It takes faith to plant a seed. We hope everyone can witness the love and good work around us and understand that the garden growing today comes from the attention and dedication of others who came before us. And we hope that we will be willing to continue the good work by sowing more seeds of love and kindness in this place we call home.

As none of us was able to attend the Summer Conference at Elon on June 22-23, I do not yet have the information about the new programs. We will have a district meeting in early August when we will be able to find out what the program material will be for I heard that the Summer meeting was the best ever, so it was disappointing that none of us could be there. Even though we are not meeting regularly we are all being kept busy. Our talented quilting group is continuing to work on new creative projects. They made a beautiful quilt for Rev. Lloyd and Gussie Spencer as a farewell gift which we all signed. The quilt will be an extra-special keepsake for them. Now the pickling brigade is hard at work making beet and cucumber pickles. Thank you to all you ladies for all the hard work, and to those who have been growing and contributing the vegetables. These items are a big hit at the church suppers.

4 Thank you to everyone who helped with the refreshments following the funeral of Dewey Greeson. Although it was a sad time, it was also a special time of fellowship for the family and friends of Dewey and Jean. We enjoyed a delightful covered dish supper at the home of Virginia and Cleo Barker on June 14 th. We missed some of our regulars, but were especially pleased that one of our new ministers, Rev. Lynne and husband Bob, could attend. It was a beautiful evening with plenty of good food and company--much to be thankful for. Thank you Virginia and Cleo for your hospitality! Try to stay cool and hydrated, and avoid ticks and mosquitoes! Love and peace, Elizabeth Craft The Friends and Neighbors group is off for the summer but the Chaplain for the group, Doug Clapp, had some especially good news to share. You may have heard already, but I want to make sure you know our son, Michael Clapp, has returned from his year in Afghanistan. We met him last Tuesday (May 31) at BWI Airport. He is formally assigned to the Washington Navy Yard and current plans are for him to pursue studies at the National War College on Fort McNair. We are thankful for his safe return and we thank all of the Mt. Hope congregation for their prayers, thoughts and letters over the last year. Proud Parents, Doug and Diane with Michael Rev. Spencer s and Gussie s last Sunday with Mt. Hope was May 29 th. Here are some photos of that last Sunday: Michael arriving home!

6 Spencer s cell is We will let you know Gussie s cell when we get it. The following notice was sent to the local newspapers: Words From Lloyd and Gussie: It s been about the fastest nine years of our lives. From the time we arrived at Mt. Hope to the day that we are leaving you our lives have been changed forever. From the time I answered the call to the ordained ministry Gussie and I have been on our own. Extended family is something we could only think about. Who were we to turn to when we needed someone to lean on or when we needed some physical or emotional nourishment? We honestly understand what it means to call the church our family because for forty-two years the church has been the closest thing to a family that we ve been able to have. We feel so privileged to have come to Mt. Hope to bring us to the end of our formal ministry. You have been such an important part of our lives and we ll never forget it. Thank you so much for the wonderful send-off that you provided for us. Thank you so much for the wonderful gift that you gave us as a token of your love. Most of all, thank you for the love and friendship that you have given us for these past nine years. The one thing I m certain of is the fact that our spirits will be part of each other for the rest of our lives and beyond. We wish only the best for you and rest assured that every time you get together for worship, chicken pie/bbq Supper, or any work or fellowship event, our spirits will be right there with you. So much love, Lloyd and Gussie Rev. Spencer s New Address: Here is the new address for Lloyd and Gussie Spencer: Reese Blvd., # 107, Huntersville, NC Rev. 7 alive to be able to serve with a minister for whom she has the deepest respect and appreciation in a place that she cherishes and has always thought of as home. The two begin their ministry on June 1, The church is located at 2400 Mt. Hope Church Road in Whitsett, NC. On June 5, 2016, we were pleased to welcome our new co-pastors Rev. Lynne Hinton and Rev. Hope Volunteers participated in a Saturday Garden Workday at Peacehaven Community Farm on Saturday, May 7 th, from 9:00 am noon. Peacehaven, is dedicated to establishing an affordable housing community that provides a permanent home for adults with special needs in a supportive and family-like environment and committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability on their working, community supported farm. They are embraced by the support of a diverse and dedicated community engaged in growing both vegetables and relationships. Volunteers were: Carmen Cox, Chelsey Cox, Barbara Greeson, Bennie Gerner, Judy Gerner, Karly Smith, Emily Smith, Greg Moser and Lisa Moser. This was followed by a potluck lunch with meal donations from our Mt Hope Church Members and others participating. The afternoon concluded with Mt Hope Representatives participating in a program to Helping the church see opportunities to grow and become a sanctuary for special needs kids and their families. The representatives from our church were: Judy Gerner, Elizabeth Craft, Bennie Gerner and Lisa Moser. One of the leaders for this program was Rev. Kristin Vaughn. Many thanks to everyone!

9 Crossnore Trip On June 15, 2016, a group of fifteen Mt. Hope members went to a place in the North Carolina Mountains called Crossnore. This not only is a little town but also a school campus that has been in existence for 103 years to help hurting children. This place started out because two doctors saw a need for a doctor in this mountain region and it has grown into a place where children can go into a foster-like home, only more. They give these children, who come from broken homes, the help they need in any way they need. Crossnore tries to keep things as much like a normal home as they can. They help mentally, physically, spiritually, and also let them know that there are people who love and care about them. There are cottages that have house parents. Each home group has a house pet. Sometimes when a child will not talk to anyone, he will relate to a pet and can heal. They usually eat breakfast and lunch in the dining hall but fix their dinner in the cottages. The older ones help cook the evening meals. Sometimes there are several in a family group that come and they try to keep them together and let them stay in the same bedroom if appropriate. Normally everyone has their own bedroom. Each child has their own chores to do which are suited to their age level. The children range from age one year to 20 years of age. There is a rock church on the campus and on Wednesday night they have services but on Sunday s, each cottage has a different church in the community that they attend as a family. Again, trying to keep things as normal as can be. There are four horses, two normal size and two miniature. These are used for therapy also. They use all kinds of sports; track, kickball, basketball, etc. They also use arts for therapy. Whatever works for the children they use, even to teaching the children weaving which also helps with funding. They have two paid weavers that teach but also make clothing that can be sold in the Weave Museum. These funds go back to help support the school. As for more on funding, the government pays 50%, give or take, and the rest they depend upon moneys from the second-hand store, the Weave Museum, the Coffee Shop, and mostly from donations. The Coffee Shop is staffed by the children that are old enough to work in it. They are paid a salary but part of it is put aside for their college fund. The second-hand store is stocked by the donations from outside people. The cost per child, per year, is around $30,000 and at this time they have over seventy children to take care of. We were told that one day, not too long ago, they had to turn away 27 children because they didn t have the room. They are building a new cottage and will be able to accommodate twenty something children in it. We were taken around the campus to see all of these things by a sweet lady named Cortney who is from Hickory, N. C. but had done some volunteer work at Crossnore some years back while she was still in school. Later she had seen that there was a job opening, applied and got it. She did a fantastic job for us. If you would like to learn more about Crossnore you can go to their website at crossnoreschool.org or as me and I ll try to get you the information. We did deliver the school supplies, the things for the bird cage, and personal items for the kids. Then we had a few boxes and bags for the secondhand store. Thanks to all who donated to the cause. I personally would like to thank Clifton Greeson for the great job of driving the van up those mountain hills and back down again. Didn t lose one passenger!! Sincerely, Social Concerns Chairperson, Brenda Currie
