.Pastor s Writings April Showers Bring May Flowers The month of May has many important events happening. On May 7, we will celebrate a Membership Sunday. We rejoice that we have folks ready to join our church family. The Deacons are planning a Ladies Mother s Day Tea on May 11, at Rupert s Restaurant, from 1-3 p.m. The tickets are $25 and all women are encouraged to come and enjoy this fun time together. On May 14, we will celebrate Mother s Day with a special worship service. There will be great music and a fellowship time after worship to honor all women. There will be carnations for everyone red if your mother is still alive, white if she lives in heaven with our Lord. (Please, God, watch over my mother, for she now lives in heaven with You.) We are having our annual plant sale on May 27. Our flowers this year are grown for us by Edwards Nursery and the sight of all our lawn and sidewalks covered with beautiful flowers is a sight to see. Linda Hallock is chair of this awesome event and we are all encouraged to come out that day to help from early morning unloading the trucks to clean-up time after the sale is over. June 4 is Pentecost Sunday, the day when the Holy Spirit swept down with wind and fire into the lives of Jesus followers and the church was born. Pilgrim Cove Camp is about to begin its summer camping program and we encourage you to talk with your children and grandchildren, or maybe a neighbor child, about attending. The dates for our UCC kids are July We are already receiving registrations for our three youth camps. If someone you know needs a scholarship, please see Pastor Char and one will be arranged. Often when we talk about the camp, we are thinking about the programs for our children and young people, but the camp serves folks of all ages. The season begins with the work weekends, May and I would encourage everyone who has some free time to plan on coming out to camp to help get it up and running. There will be jobs for everyone those of you who can hammer and saw, hold a ladder, change a light bulb or enjoy eating spaghetti and meatballs. If your talent is more in the area of cleaning, there are cabins to be cleaned and brush to be cleared. Our annual church picnic will be August 20 at the beach at Pilgrim Cove Camp and (Continued on Page 6)

Let s Get Re-Acquainted Virginia Boydstun was born in Nebraska, the oldest of three children. In 1938, when she was a sophomore in high school, her family moved to Emmett, Idaho, where she graduated from high school. Virginia s best friend had a cousin who came to visit a young man named Johnny Boydstun. Johnny and Virginia were married in During World War II, Johnny worked as an airplane mechanic at Mountain Home Air Base. Following the war, the couple lived at Landmark, where Johnny worked on a road crew, keeping the road open from Warm Lake to Yellow Pine. Virginia was the camp cook for the crew. The Boydstuns then moved to McCall and built a service station across the street from Shore Lodge, which they operated for three years. After that, Johnny began working for a contractor in the summers and managing the Little Ski Hill in the winters. During Virginia Boydstun his time in construction, he was moved all over the west. Virginia and the children Barry, born in 1945, and Patty, born in 1952 packed their belongings into a 42-foot trailer and went with him, returning home each winter for Johnny to work at the ski hill and the children to attend school. In 1960, Barry began high school and the family returned to McCall to live full-time. Johnny was hired as the first employee of Brundage Mountain and helped build the ski resort. He worked at Brundage for 27 years, until his retirement. After returning to McCall, Virginia kept busy being a mom, but also worked at Brundage selling tickets. She then worked at Shaver s (which later became Ridley s Family Market), retiring after 15 years. Virginia s son, Barry, is now retired and he and his wife, Patty, live in Boise. Our church actively prayed for Barry during his kidney transplant, which was a (Continued on Page 7)

Membership Sunday To Be Held A Membership Sunday is scheduled for May 7 during the morning worship service. Received into membership will be Resident and Associate Members. A Resident Member is a person who does not have membership in another church and wishes to be a member of McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ. An Associate Member is a person who has membership in another church but worships at this church when in McCall and would like to have membership here also. This enables those members to hold office and vote at the Annual Meeting. The church will also be welcoming anyone wishing to transfer membership from another church. Membership at McCall Community Congregational United church of Christ is by confession of faith or transfer of membership from another church. Membership packets are available in the church office. This packet gives information about the church and also includes a copy of the church Constitution and By-Laws. Anyone interested in becoming a member on May 7, or of you have any questions about the church, please see Pastor Char. Camp Dates Set This year the camps at Pilgrim Cove Camp for the young people will be held July Pilgrims Camp is for those who have just completed 2 nd -5 th grades; Sojourners Camp is for those who have just completed 6 th -8 th grades; and Exodus Camp is for teens who have just completed 9 th -12 th grades. The cost for camp is a little less this year at $ for all camps. Scholarship funds are available for those who need them. Please see Pastor Char if a scholarship is needed. Camp applications are available in the church office. Please pick up your application or call (208) to have one mailed to you as the camp is not accepting online applications this year. Forms must be received by Pilgrim Cove Camp no later than June 15. Deacons Meeting Day Changed The day that the Board of Deacons meets has been changed from the 4 th Thursday of each month to the 4 th Tuesday. The time has also been changed from 4:30 p.m. to 10 a.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 23, at 10 a.m. in the church library.

Mother s Day Tea Planned A Mother s Day Tea is planned for all women from McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ on Thursday, May 11. In the interest of poetic economy and truth, I have succeeded in concentrating my deepest feelings and belief into two perfectly crafted lines: You re my mother, I would have no other! --Forest Houtenschil Coming Events May 7: Membership Sunday Communion May 11 1 p.m.: Mother s Day Tea May 23 10:30 a.m.: Deacons May 27 8 a.m.-3 p.m.: Plant Sale June 12: PCC Camp Applications Due July 9-15: UCC Kids Camps at PCC August 20: Summer PCC Camp Work Weekends Scheduled Pilgrim Cove Camp has scheduled two Spring Work Weekends in May May and May If you can clean, paint, hold a ladder, change a light bulb, or enjoy eating spaghetti and meatballs, your help is needed to help get the camp ready for the 2017 summer season. Anyone wishing to spend the night is welcome, just bring your sleeping bag and pillow. Meals will be provided. If you would like to help out, please contact the camp by May 8, so they can make sure to order the right amount of food. Call (208) or manager@pilgrimcovecamp.org. Pastor s Writings (Continued from Page 2) then our Fall Social will be the 28 th of October in Creech Lodge. Mark these dates on your calendars, as we have such a good time when we get together for social gatherings.

Virginia Boydstun (Continued from Page 4) complete success. Daughter Patty and her husband, Dean Hovdey, own Hometown Sports. They have two children Eric and Anna. Eric and his wife, Jessica, live next door to Virginia. Patty and Dean, with Eric and Jessica, are working on a family succession plan at Hometown Sports. Anna and her husband, Stephen, live in Texas. Virginia and Johnny were avid travelers, having visited Alaska twice, went across Canada to Nova Scotia, and made several trips south. However, the highlight of their travels was a trip to Japan for the 1972 Winter Olympics, when Patty was on the U.S. ski team. Virginia and Johnny joined McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ in 1944, which now makes Virginia the longest-time member we have. She has been active in the Women s Bible Study group and at one time served as a deacon. Johnny passed away in 2008, but Virginia has remained active. However, she said she misses skiing, since she no longer does that. But she does enjoy her weekly exercise class and yoga and she s active in the McCall Senior Citizens. Birthday Greetings...
