1 Mt. Hope United Church of Christ Mt. Hope Messenger April, Mt. Hope Church Rd. Whitsett, NC Office: Fax: website: church co-pastors Rev. Lynne Hinton (505) (cell) Rev. Kristin Gerner Vaughn (336) (cell) interim choir director/organist Ekin Ustunel church secretary Shirley Connor Office hours: Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Thurs. - Fri., 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. consistory president Elizabeth Craft board of Christian education Carmen Cox, director youth director Lisa Moser custodian Brenda Currie Your Love Letter from Your Pastors: It is April! Easter has arrived! Spring has sprung! This winter has seemed to drag on so it is especially life-giving and desperately important to celebrate the longer, warmer hours of daylight and more, the Resurrection of Jesus! As we consider what this religious season means, Frederick Buechner said it well, The worst isn t the last thing about the world. It s the next to the last thing. The last thing is the best. It s the power from on high that comes down into the world, that wells up from the rock-bottom worst of the world like a hidden spring. Can you believe it? The last, best thing is the laughing deep in the hearts of the saints, sometimes our hearts even. You are terribly loved and forgiven. Yes. You are healed. All is well. Sometimes in our spiritual lives we stop on Friday. We stay in a place of despair and doubt; but the Easter celebration reminds us that we are not a Friday people! We are a Sunday people, an Easter people! We believe that life is stronger than death. We believe that God s word is a word of victory and hope! We cling to the story of a crucified Christ, risen from the grave, glorious and transfigured! We hold fast to the belief that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Not death, not the things of this world, not grief or temptations, not rulers or present things or hard things from the past or fears of the future. We will overcome. Justice will roll down and mercy shall not cease. Our mourning will turn to joy. Even if the rest of the year you are downcast or heavy laden, let April be the month when you remind yourself that you are God s child, loved and forgiven and received. Remind yourself every day that our God is great and merciful and that no matter what difficult circumstances you are facing or will face, you are not alone and you will not be defeated. From day to day, from life change to life change, from disappointment to celebration, from heartbreak to new love, from suffering and death to the world beyond this one, we remain in the palm of God s hand. Nothing shall tear us away from our God who loves us so. We sing. We dance. We ring bells to mark our Alleluia s. We watch the life burst from the seed and spread across the dark and barren earth. We gather together in community. And we believe. We know. We are. Our God is a mighty God!

3 to all the ladies who provided food following Clarine s funeral on March 30 th. Our joint meeting in March was cancelled due to inclement weather. We will make up for this by holding a joint meeting on Tuesday, April 10 th, at 7:00 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Please be prepared to make nominations for our 2018 honor or memorial certificate recipients. New members are welcome to our women s fellowship. Blessings, Dee Greeson Sisters of Hope The newest ladies group has decided on a name - Sisters of Hope. We would like to thank Marcia Cham and Tracy Brady for sharing their pictures and stories from their recent trip overseas at our last meeting! For our April meeting on the 16th, we will meet at 6:30 at Wholly Guacamole at Stoney Creek. lamb? Kites, St. Patrick s Day, March Madness (basketball), Spring has sprung, green leaves and blooms everywhere, Lent and leading us to Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter. The last few have something in common: the ideas of rebirth, resurrection and regrowth. Just as in winter, seemingly many of the plants die, losing their green and becoming brown and dry, so too did Jesus die on the cross. In our spring we see the dead plants revive, becoming green again, growing again, producing flowers again, and eventually seeds for the next generation. At Easter we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the life everlasting for ourselves. So, my wish for you this March is May our kites fly high, may your team win, may your yards be carpets of green, and your flower beds be filled with color. Most of all this spring of 2018, may your life be filled with the joy of rebirth and may you celebrate the eternal life in Christ. We celebrated the March birthdays of Jaynee Brown and Lin Gallagher by singing to them, we signed cards for the sick, and awarded door prizes to Clifton Greeson, Lloyd Gilliam, and Pat Huizinga. We have an extra meeting on April 4 to go to the Greensboro Science Center. Everyone is welcome to join us. We will leave the church at 9:30. There is a cost of $ After visiting the Science Center, we will enjoy lunch at Karonda s before returning to the church. Our April 17 meeting will feature a speaker from Guilford Metro 911. We will meet at the church at 10:30. Lunch will be at Western Steak House. The Friends and Neighbors group met in the church fellowship hall on Tuesday, March 20. Leader Dottie Deeter welcomed everyone and read a poem about five things you cannot recover in life. You cannot recover the stone after it has been thrown A word once it is spoken An occasion once it is missed An action when it is done And time once it has passed. Doug Clapp had devotions which centered around March. What are some thoughts you have when you think of March? In like a lion, out like a Greensboro Urban Ministry: Our April collection dates are Sunday, April 1 and Sunday, April 8. Of course, you are welcome to bring your donations at any time during the month. There is also a container in the Carport Entryway for cash donations if this is the way you prefer to donate. Any cash that is donated will be used to purchase additional items to send to Urban Ministry. This ministry is important as we have the responsibility to help those in need. Your donations are also so welcomed by the folks at Urban Ministry. Please continue to support this needed ministry. May God bless you for all that you give!

4 Spring Chicken Pie / BBQ Supper Thanks to everyone for your terrific support of our recent Chicken Pie & BBQ Supper. Other funds from this upper will go to pay for the new replacement refrigerator in the kitchen in the fellowship hall and to support church projects. Thank you for being an important part of this project making it a successful event. Supper Committee

Applications for this FREE CAMP can be found online at catawba.edu/discover Hey friend! Are you thinking about camping at Outpost this summer? You may have heard that it's a great place, but still have some concerns. This document shares some facts and thoughts about Outpost, grouped by major topics. Logistics So before, I get into questions here are a few details. Outpost is about half a mile from Main Site of JRVC (near the Archery Range). It includes one cook shelter, four A-frames (platform shelters with an A-frame roof and screen door), two latrines, a campfire/eating area, an outdoor chapel, and a covered activity shelter. On top of this, campers use the regular Main Site bathhouses, store, field, and of course the River! Outpost Camp Campers usually eat dinner at Main Site on Sunday night and breakfast Saturday morning; otherwise they cook together at the Outpost site (counselors will be facilitating and helping). Most Outpost camps have shower time at least once a day at Main Site. Bathhouses are FAR away/what is a latrine? Outpost has two (!) latrines (fancy name for a porta-john) and since you will help take care of them, you will know they are clean! Toilet paper is something we all love, so that is definitely available at all times. We also use (and help clean) the Main Site bathhouses at least once a day. Our community is not smelly we will all be showering regularly! Dirty clothes Yep, your clothes will get dirty! But you won t be in any trouble for that, plus all your new Outpost friends will also have dirt on their clothes. We can support each other! The AFrames have space for your duffle bag, and clean clothes. Just make sure to use the packing list for camp (and campers should pack their own stuff (not their mom!) That way campers know where things are once they get here. Food Outpost is a community, so we take turns cooking for and with each other. The directors plan meals beforehand, and we all carry food up from the Main Site kitchen a couple times a day. Counselors help facilitate meal prep at each meal, so you have help! The food is usually pretty awesome, and bonus, when campers come home they will have some awesome meal prepping experience! Yummy meal examples: Pancakes/Sausage and a cereal option for breakfast, Sandwiches/chips/fruit and dessert for lunch, and Hamburger/veggie burger hobo meals with your choice of veggies, cheese and toppings + cobbler for dessert at dinner. Snack time every afternoon! Dirt/General Outdoor and Camping Issues Dirt Yes, dirt. It's a part of creation. Sometimes (when it rains) there will even be mud. I promise we won t throw it at you, and if you are a neat and clean person, you will generally be able to stay that way. Bugs Also, yes, bugs. However, you can bring bug spray, and wear long sleeves/pants if they really get to you. Counselors are great about being mindful of ticks. By the time you leave on Saturday, you will be a master-camp waver. So, spiders are totally not my deal, but I have learned to appreciate them at Outpost. They help with the bugs. I might get wet, cold, lost I ll go back to remind you that Outpost is a community. You may get wet or cold, but if you are, we all are. I promise the counselors and directors will keep you safe, and as soon as possible we ll work on getting everyone dry and warm. Also, we have the shelter for group time, so we ll go there if it is pouring and we need a sheltered space. You should not get lost. Adults will be with you at all times. Camp is actually smaller than you think, and when we go offsite we ll keep at least two adults with any group at all times. Hiking Hiking can be fun (and possibly a bit intimidating, if you ve never done it before). It generally depends on your shoes and food supply. We ll let you know ahead of time, so that you have the right shoes on, and counselors will make sure you have plenty of food. Outpost campers usually go on at least one hike. I promise it will be fun, and you ll be part of a group. Maybe think of it as walking, but in a cooler place with no concrete, and possibly a waterfall at the end The WOODS/Creepy Noises freak me out! Yep, if you are not familiar with the woods they can

9 intimidating, but they can also be FUN. Some things I have learned about the woods usually the creepy noises are things you can figure out if you calm down and listen. If you can t figure it out, check in with your counselor/director. The woods are also a great place to see things you cannot see at school or your home. There will be the dirt/bugs but there will also be flowers, fun critters like skinks, stars, and if you get up early or go to bed late amazing sunrises and sunsets. The Wilderness has NO Technology No phone/no internet Yes, it s true. These things are much less plentiful at camp. It s an opportunity to see what life was like for the pioneers. Just kidding, it is a chance to unplug. You can do it! It is even healthy. Our society leaves us very little time to disconnect and spend time with people, in person. You will get a whole week to actually talk to people face to face instead of through a screen. (Parents in case of emergency there is a landline at the Main Site. We ll call you, if we need you). No electricity Also true. But we have lanterns and a campfire. You can do it. By Saturday, you won t even notice. Life is quieter without electricity. Friends and Social Stuff Never been there The first time anyone goes anywhere, they haven t been there before. Think about school, church, soccer practice your house. You tried those things for the first time, once upon a time. You can do it! You are brave you can come to Outpost for the first time! I would have to come alone; my friends from home are not brave enough No one has to be alone at Outpost. We all go up to the camp together with at least two people (you will probably need help carrying your things!). Camp is the BEST place to make friends. Almost all my best friends were made at Johns River, and I think there are some folks you need to know and they need to know you! Miscellaneous Its too church-y Johns River is a camp with a faith focus, and is an outdoor ministry of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ. BUT, and this is a huge BUT you are welcome, no matter who you are and/or what you believe. Lucy and I mean this. We will offer devotions/quiet time most days, and these will usually include scripture readings for context. We will try to create a safe space for ALL questions, doubts, beliefs and disbeliefs. Camp is a place to grow, learn, question, and support each other. General community norms include respect (for people and creation), kindness, and a willingness to listen. We do ask that you respect everyone else s thoughts and beliefs as well. That s all. Zombies So, this is not really my area of expertise, but Lucy knows about Zombies. The Outpost community is pretty tough and hearty if Zombies become real, we ll make it. Plus we have an axe for chopping wood. We are usually lovers not fighters maybe we can convince them to join us singing songs around the fire? If you have concerns or questions that this list doesn t address, feel free to me (easchiemann@gmail.com) or give me a call ( ). Note, I have a dumb phone, so just Proctor for EOGS? Nathanael Greene Elementary School EOG: May 30 th June 2 nd 2017 Call if you can help Thank you: Bob and I are so blessed to have you as our church family and friends. Thanks so much for all the nice things you did during my illness - - your prayers, cards, calls and the treats! You are all in my prayers and may God bless you. Hugs and Love, Dottie Deeter Thank you: Dear Friends at Mt. Hope Church, Thank you for your calls, visits, cards and, most of all, your prayer during this time of transition. God has a plan for each of us an I pray we can stand before God and He can say job well done thou good and faithful servant. May God bless you! Carol O Ferrell (Ralph s sister)
