The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... Dalton United Methodist Church SEPTEMBER 2012 NEW WEBSITE! Try it! After the end of World War One, the famous desert fighter, Lawrence of Arabia, brought several Arab leaders to Paris to represent their interests at the Versailles Peace Conference. Those men of the desert were filled with astonishment at the sights of Paris, that s for sure. But nothing intrigued them quite as much as the running water in their hotel rooms. In the desert, water was so rare and hard to come by, yet in their rooms it seemed to be free and never ending, simply at the turning of a tap. When it was time to leave Paris, Lawrence of Arabia encountered a unique problem. It seems that the visiting Arabs had begun to remove the faucets in order to take them back to the desert! They had come to believe that these magic instruments would give them water at will in their native Arabia. Only with great difficulty did Lawrence convince them that the faucets were no good if detached from the water supply. No good if detached! How true. We are not much in faith if we are detached from the love of Christ, that free and never ending flow of love that enriches and enlivens. Without that open faucet of love from above we struggle to keep life in perspective. We find it difficult to forgive and be forgiven, to love and to be loved, to cleanse and be cleaned, to give and receive, to share and to listen. Only when we are fully hooked up does the power and peace of the Gospel flow through us. Are you hooked up with the love of Christ? Does that love guide you as you worship and work in our church? Does the flow of the Spirit lead you in your job and in your home? Does it help you set priorities and direct you in your habits and disciplines? It can. This week why don t you play plumber and check out where your faucet of life is hooked up. I look forward to sharing with you as we experience the presence of Christ flowing through you and me. Peace,

Ice Cream Social The evening was chilly, but well attended. Delicious ice cream and great conversation! Issue 9 Page 5

News from the United Methodist Women How can it be very hot all summer and just when we have the ice cream social it cools off? I believe that is what kept some of the people away. We who were there had a very nice evening. The ice cream was delicious, the company enjoyable, and not all that cool in the building. Overall, it was a fun evening. Oh, by the way Ed Starling s flavors were Vanilla, Orange Dreamsicle and Butter Pecan. An extra surprise was Dixie and Bill Jones made Strawberry. M-m-m-good! All were delicious! It is going to be a long year to wait to have more. Don and I also would like to thank everyone who helped to make it a successful event. (see photos on previous page) The time is almost here for our UMW Retreat led by Ruth Ann Robinson. It will be on Saturday, September 15 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the new fellowship hall. We will serve a light breakfast and Penny s Pantry will cater lunch. There will be a sign up sheet on the office door to register if you are coming and to make your luncheon selections. The selections for sandwiches are: chicken salad, egg salad, or tuna salad on a Kaiser roll and selections for the side are macaroni salad, potato salad or cole slaw. The charge for lunch will be $4.50, which you can pay to Dixie Jones on the 15th or before. If you would like to bring a friend, we would be delighted to have them. Be sure to register their name and selections for lunch. I am looking forward to the day and meeting Ruth Ann. Please join us for a day of Christian fellowship. Ruth Ann ed me a message she wanted me to convey to the ladies of the Church: In the weeks preceding the Women's Retreat (Sept. 15) please join us in praying for this event Ask the Lord to prepare our hearts and make them open for what He would want us to learn 2. Pray that the Lord would bring the women who he would desire to be a part of this day 3. Pray that the Lord would Page 6 The Monthly Messenger

increase unity and joy among the women of the church 4. Lastly, pray that the day would be a time of refreshment, laughter, and inspiration for all who attend. Do not forget to men of our church know they will be free to join the UMW on the evening of Tuesday, September 25 at 7:00 PM in the old fellowship hall. Mark Basinger the Stark County Wildlife Officer will lead the program on Wildlife and Birds. I am sure it will be an interesting program for all. On October 9 at 6:00 PM, the UMW will be making vegetable soup for the shut-ins. On the same evening, Teri Weaver will be giving the program on PEAK Education. We will be enjoying a light meal and dessert that evening. Sunday, November 11th will be the Thanksgiving Dinner for the church family following the service. November 27th: starting the evening off at 6:00, we will make candy for the Cookie Walk/Bazaar/ Luncheon then Sally Slusser will have the THANK OFFERING PROGRAM. December 1st is the date for the Cookie Walk. Hope everyone can bake at least 12 dozen cookies. We will need many cookies to make the event a success. The event will be a total success when we have helped people through our mission projects. Come and join us for all the programs we have planned. I will leave you with this thought: God does not ask about our ability or inability, but about our availability. God Bless You All, ~Beth Johnson UMW President You have become living building-stones for God s use in building his house. What s more, you are his holy priests. (1 Peter 2:5 TLB) Issue 9 Page 7

********************************************************************************************** VBS NOTES VBS 2012 was held Aug. 5-8 at the Dalton Presbyterian Church, with the theme "What's Cooking...God's recipe for our lives." The theme focused on how God's cookbook (the Bible) contains all the recipes we need to follow to cook/bake our lives the way He would want us to live it. There were approximately 50 different children attending throughout the week. The children enjoyed learning about God's plan for our lives, making some awesome crafts, singing fun songs, and having some snacks. My thanks to Pastor Paul for coming and helping out each night, Carol Farriss for planning and serving the snacks, Bev McGinty for pinch-hitting with the music one evening, and our helpers...chelsey Detwiler; Alexzandra Haer; John, Jake, Emilee, and Abby Gregory; Ellie Martinez; and Kourtney Argabrite. From DPC...The Greg Miller Family, the Chuck Henning Family, June Hiner, Shirley Hare, Karol Niehaus, Jocelyn Carver, Bree Wilson, Pastor Trubee, and especially Lisa and Nate Elett. My sincere apologies if I omitted anyone.
