1 The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... The Canadian northlands experience only two seasons: winter and July. As the back roads begin to thaw, they become muddy and slick and vehicles that make it through the backcountry leave deep ruts. The ground freezes hard during the winter months and the highway ruts become a part of the traveling challenges. Many roads are unpaved and only a layer of gravel is added from time to time. For vehicles entering this undeveloped area during the winter, there are signs which read: Driver, please choose carefully which rut you drive in because you ll be in it for the next 20 miles. The lesson here is that ruts aren t bad you just want to be in the right rut. To make that choice wisely will depend on the values you ve embraced. Lou Holtz was born and raised in East Liverpool, Ohio and coached football at five colleges. He also took those teams to a bowl games because he taught his players three simple rules or values. These values, he thought, would guide his players into the right ruts of life. (1) Do what is right. Be on time, polite, honest, remain free from drugs and if you have any Dalton United Methodist Church SEPTEMBER 2014 questions, get out your Bible. (2) Do your best. Mediocrity is unacceptable when you are capable of doing better. (3) Treat others as you would like to be treated. Practice love and core values drawn from the Bible, the ruts you fall into will be transformed from ruts to rails rails on which you can ride to a full and meaningful life. May we all have the insight to embrace the good, shun the bad and move forward steadily in a life of love and service to all. Peace,

6 News from the United Methodist Women Are you asking where did the summer go? It s time to get back into the groove of schedules, school, the weekly routine and probably a whole lot more. And it s time to get back into the swing of UMW! The UMW is back from their summer break also. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 20, The Dalton UMW group is hosting the Sisters in Service Fall Gathering. This is the Canal District s fall meeting. Registration and breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. The cost of breakfast is $5.00. The service/meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. and will be held in the sanctuary. Shane Geisheimer is the speaker for the morning. Shane is involved with The Heart of Rock and Roll Prom, an unforgettable event for individuals and families who are a part of the special needs community. Please see the flyer in the newsletter for more information. Please have your registration form into the church office by September 12. Since Dalton UMW is hosting this event, it is important that we have as many ladies from our church attend as possible. We realize that this event falls on a Saturday, however, the meeting should be over before noon, leaving you the rest of the weekend for your own activities. As well as attending, there are also many opportunities to volunteer or donate. We will be having two church cleanup times. The first is Friday, September 12, starting at 6:00 p.m. and the second is scheduled for Saturday, September 13 at 9:00 a.m. These times are scheduled to clean the church and have it sparkling for the district meeting. We will need food prepared for the breakfast, setup and cleanup, greeters and some signs printed. If you are interested in helping, please contact Jane Koontz at All ladies of the church are encouraged to participate. The October meeting for soup making has been rescheduled. The new date for making soup is October 4, 2014 starting at 8:00 a.m. It was decided to change the date to a Saturday morning so hopefully more ladies would be able to help with the soup project. Garden produce will also be more Page 6 Issue 9

7 plentiful at the beginning of the month rather than later. This is always a fun time for everyone to get together and do a good deed for the older members who have done so much for our church throughout the years. A light breakfast will be served. Susan McMullen has devotions and Sharon Starling and Mary Loomis will be our hostesses. Lots of activities coming up and lots to do. We hope everyone will mark their calendars and plan on being involved with the UMW activities in September and October. ~Jane Koontz UMW Vice President May God who gives patience, steadiness, and encouragement help you to live in complete harmony with each other each with the attitude of Christ toward the other. (Romans 15:5 TLB) Foster Parent Informational Dinner Invitation Ohio Guidestone Foster Care Services is searching for loving homes to participate in the healing mission of being a Foster Parent. Our agency holds a covenant relationship with the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. One important service that we are providing is Foster Care. There were almost 4,000 children in Foster Care placement in Summit and Stark counties last year, and you or someone you know can provide a healing home to a child in need. We are actively recruiting new Foster Parents to join our faith based and supportive team. Please call Sherry Doherty at # for more information. We will be starting our Fall Pre-Service Class Tuesday, September 2, from 6:00-9:00 pm. ******************************************** NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE Has begun its work to elect those who exhibit gifts and graces to share and strengthen our committees in the church. If the Nominations Committee calls on you, please prayerfully consider the position to which they are nominating you for. There is plenty of help and guidance available for every committee and position in the church. If you are currently serving our church on a committee and would like to continue in that service, we THANK YOU and will certainly keep you in that position. However, if you feel a need to step into another area of ministry please let our committee know by September 14. Leave a note in Pastor Paul mailbox. The Monthly Messenger Page 7
