1 The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... Have you ever been frustrated? Have you ever been upset? Have you ever struggled in some area of your life? Well, I remember a story of a young person who was and couldn t stand it any longer. Sooo, he went to the chapel and paced up and down the aisle, slapping the back of the empty pews. He shouted, God you created this world look at all the difficulties, agony, cruelty, anguish, starvation, neglect, waste, abuse people face. Everywhere I look I see dysfunctional, heartbroken, lonely people! The young person went on and on and on, raging and gibbering at God. Finally, drained and exasperated, he gazed up at the stained lead crystal cross and yelled, This world is such an awful mess! Why even I could have done a much greater job than this!!! Then, out of the quietness, he heard these words, And that is precisely what I want you to do. It s sooo easy to identify all the problems that exist Dalton United Methodist Church NOVEMBER 2018 all around us. However, just like the young person in the story, Jesus is calling us to be His body in this world to make a difference. Will you do your body part? 3 ABOUT OUR MEMBERS... MISSIONS NEWS Help us minister to those in need. Elijah s Cupboard can always use non-perishable food items for The Salvation Army. Please bring an item or two with you and place them in the good cupboard in the hallway. We also continue to collect labels for the Red Bird Mission. -Labels include: "General Mills Boxtops for Education"; and "Tyson Project A+ Labels for Education". A collection envelope for the labels is located on the bulletin board, in the narthex of the Church. 5 News from the United Methodist Church LITURGIST CHILDREN S CHAT For those interested in being liturgist or leading Children s Chat for the Worship Services this Fall, there is a sign-up sheet located on the Church Office door. 7 Subject: FW: Article in the Daily Record from 1961 Welker A. Mumaw Being in Choir for 70 Years From: Susan Vernon My Grandfather was Welker Mumaw. I spent a lot of time in Dalton when I was a child, going to see him and hanging out in the greenhouse where he and my two uncles worked. We also had many dinners at the restaurant downtown (called Gregory's); I think it's been long gone, so you may not know of it. My dad & grandpa would always argue who was paying the check; they finally decided to take turns! Many, many fond memories. Oh, by the way, I'm still a devoted Ohio State fan (that's NEVER going to change) & still cheer for the Browns, too (at least they have one win now-got to watch them beat the Jets last Thursday night). My dad was a big football fan and so were my sister and me. He went to Massillon High School when Paul Brown was going there (think dad was a year or so younger). He was a very special grandpa, as he was the only one my sister & I had (my dad's father died when he was only 6). Grandpa had 16 grandchildren among his 8 children and loved us all, as we did him. He died the summer before my senior year in high school, I'm glad I had him as long as I did (he was 90 when he passed). My family vacationed up at Lakeside many summers and grandpa came with us. I have attached a copy of the newspaper article regarding my grandfather's 70 years in the choir, and a copy of the cover of the Methodist Hymnal he was presented with. ~Sue Vernon Issue 11 Page 7

8 Saturday, October 6th, we gathered in the church kitchen to prepare soup to give to our shut-ins, and friends in the community. As the soup simmered on the stove, we enjoyed fellowship and lunch with each other. What a wonderful time we had! Page 8 The Monthly Messenger

10 Trick or Treat Bible Booths We had a wonderful time with the trick-or-treating today. Our booths got them in from the rain and warmed them with God's goodness. (And goodies and hot chocolate.) Jesus lights our way. Dylan helps make sure the serpent doesn't take the lollipops from the tree. Filling the basket with loaves and fishes. Pin the nose on the pumpkin. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
