1 The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... When was the last time you were at a Shopping Center? Belden Village in Canton, the Outlet at Lodi, Southpark in Strongsville or even Polaris down in Columbus? Have you ever been to a mall and stopped by a kiosk where there is a map of the mall? It shows a layout of the buildings and a diagram of where all the stores are. recently, including the loss of his family, wealth and his reputation. When something like that happens, it s easy to feel sorry for yourself. Job did. But then God gave Job a YOU ARE HERE! moment. Dalton United Methodist Church OCTOBER 2013 in our suffering the God who brought the majestic mountains into being is the same God who is with you right this minute. Trust, believe and allow God to do wonders for you by turning to him in all times that he may share in your joys and your troubles. Peace, Often, it will have a big star on it, or an arrow, and the accompanying words read: YOU ARE HERE! This is what I think of when I read the story of Job. Here s a man who certainly wasn t at a mall. He wasn t having much fun. He had suffered a lot God says to Job, in effect, Look, were you present when I formed the earth, when I brought the ocean and the mountains and the sky into being? Listen, this is where you are. But this is where I am! I am in control. You are here, and I am with you! When we are suffering and going through difficult or trying times, it s always comforting to remember that although we are here

6 News from the United Methodist Women By the time you receive this newsletter the Women s Retreat will be over and the vegetable soup will have been made and given to the shut ins. I hope you were able to take part in these two rewarding events. Now we are looking forward to the Thanksgiving Meal at the church on Sunday November 10 following the church service. As in the past, the UMW will provide the turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, drink and rolls. Please bring a vegetable, salad or dessert to complete our Thanksgiving feast. Come and give thanks with your Church family. On Tuesday December 3 at 6:00 PM, the UMW will be making candy for the Cookie Walk/Bazaar/Luncheon, which is being held on December 7 from 9:00 to 2:00. The luncheon will be from 11:00 to 2:00 pm. Also at the December 3 meeting, Maggie Conrad will be leading the Thank Offering program. Bring your contributions for the Thank Offering with you then. Thinking ahead to the Cookie Walk the UMW has to have many cookies to make it a success. We have been asking for at least 12 dozen cookies or as many as you can make. We were sold out by 10:30 last year. I hope that you can find time in your busy schedule to bake cookies for the Cookie Walk. If you have any crafts you would like to donate or consign for the bazaar to sell please contact me, Beth Johnson. The UMW will greatly appreciate all you can do to make the event a success. Going back to the Women s Retreat, Robin McFarren led a wonderfully inspiring message. Her message was based on Psalm 91. If you were not there look it up and read it. Of course, you will not have all the thoughts Page 6 Robin had for us. One thing Robin had us do was insert our own name and use she to make it a very personal Psalm. Read it again using your name. It means much more when it becomes personal doesn t it? Robin suggested searching the statement I will be with you on the computer. She said it would wow you with what will come up. I believe everyone who came to the retreat enjoyed it immensely from the feedback I received. Don receives a paper named Ohio s Country Journal and I always enjoy reading an article by Tim Reeves titled The Country Chaplain. This month he wrote about the fires that are happening in wildlife parks in western United States. He tells how beneficial fires can be to a forest. It seems strange a fire can be a good thing. The U. S. Forest Service has even adopted a policy of managed fires instead of trying to extinguish flash fires for the good of the wilderness. One of the reasons he told about is the Lodge pole cone. They actually need heat to break them open to release seeds to develop seedlings. If it were not for the fire, they would become extinct. The dead undergrowth needs to be burned away to create new life for the wildlife to eat. Tim Reeves goes on to say there is a lesson here for our town and country churches and individuals. We don t need a lightning strike to burn our churches what we need a spiritual fire to burn away the old deadwood and break open the cones of spiritual fervor that are awaiting to break forth with new growth. Chaplain Reeves continues: in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus talks to Peter about His ministry and the shape of things to come. He tells Peter that He came to bring a fire to the earth, to ignite a revolution that would bring forth new life. Every church, every individual needs a little fire and lightning once in a while to break open the stubborn seeds of new life, new perspectives, new ways of thinking and looking at life. Without that cleansing fire, the hardy seeds of new life cannot take root. He says not to let the fire to get out of The Monthly Messenger

7 control and become conflagrations. That is not good for anyone or anything. However, all of us, both churches and individuals, need some spiritual fire or flash fire to keep our hearts from becoming hardened to the point that our passion is extinguished. Here is a thought. In your church, just as in your life, take some time to look back and remember why you ever decided to become a Christian or look at why your church came into existence in the first place. Most likely the original purpose of the church was to make new disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. As an individual if, the fire of becoming a disciple has not been stoked for years our passion is ether cold or nonexistent. The truth is, Jesus does not want cold or lukewarm followers or churches. He wants people and churches with passion, with desire, with fire and with energy who want to build His kingdom on Earth and make new disciples. In John s Revelation, chapter 3, the message is quite clear to the church at Laodicea: because you and your faith are lukewarm, you will be spit out on the ground. How is your faith? Is it burning inside you? Do you have hardened cones of discipleship just waiting to be hit with the fire of faith and come bursting forth with new life? Are you ready for a little fire of faith to renew why you became a Christian? Are you ready with a fire to go out to make new disciples? Thank you for letting me share parts of Chaplain Reeves article with you. I do hope you find it as thought provoking and challenging as I did. God Bless you all. ~Beth Johnson UMW President God made the earth by his power and wisdom. He stretched out the heavens by his understanding. When he speaks there is thunder in the heavens and he causes the vapors to rise around the world; he brings the lightning with the rain and the winds from his treasuries. (Jeremiah 51:15-16 TLB) Issue 10 Page 7

8 Are you interested in becoming more involved in Dalton United Methodist Church? Are you looking for a new way to be in service to our Lord through our church? Are you a newcomer to Dalton UMC and wondering how you can be an active volunteer? Our Leadership Committee, better known as Nominations, is currently at work seeking those who would like to serve our church by being a member of Committees. These Committees meet on a regular basis and play an important role in the life of our church. No prior experience is necessary and training for these committees will be available. All that s needed is a desire to serve and be able to attend meetings and/or events that are held throughout the year. These particular Committees listed below are on a 3-year cycle. Every year, 3 new members are elected to serve on the Committee while 3 end their term. Up to 9 are on the Committees. These Committees in our Church include TRUSTEES: The Trustees are responsible with the care and upkeep of the church building, parsonage and all property belonging to the Church. They do not necessarily make repairs but make sure that repairs or updates are completed. This group meets monthly. STAFF-PARISH RELATIONS: This committee is responsible for keeping an open link between the church, pastor, and all paid staff / personnel. This group acts as a support group and provides annual evaluations, salary recommendations and job description adjustments for all hired staff persons within the church. This committee usually meets once a quarter. LEADERSHIP (Nominations): This committee is responsible for the compiling and recommending to the annual Church Conference the list of officers and committee members for the following year. This group meets from late August through October of each year, unless otherwise called. FINANCE: This group oversees the annual budget, reviews all non-budget requests and makes recommendations to the Administrative Council on related issues. They also make sure that the annual audit is completed and that various stewardship programs and events are implemented. They meet every month prior to the Administrative Council meeting. Other committees are always looking for new members who service can long as they wish to. They include Missions, Christian Education and Worship. If you would like to become a member of any committee within the church, please see Pastor Paul. Page 8 The Monthly Messenger
