1 The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... Before the days of blood banks, a little girl was dying; the only thing that could save her was a transfusion. Her 13 yearold brother had the right type of blood and volunteered his services. He quietly laid beside his sister s bed, contemplating what was about to occur and the blood being drawn from his veins. They put the needle in his arm. The boy continued to lay very still. After a few minutes, the transfusion was completed. Turning to the doctor, the boy asked, Well, Doctor, how long will it be before I die? Here the boy thought that he would have to die! What a sacrifice on the brother s part! What a love! February marks the season of love on our calendar. Valentine s Day is a day to say a special word of love to those around us. Little hearts are passed through the mail, little tokens of affection are given. It s a nice little time of happiness for those who participate. Yet February also marks the beginning of another special season of love on our calendar. February marks the beginning of the season of Lent the forty day journey of the church to Easter. It is a time for us to remember the special ministry of Jesus Christ, a ministry that found itself in tiny villages and on numerous hillsides. A ministry that eventually found itself in Jerusalem, on a cross, and in a sealed tomb. A ministry of one man that can be described as a ministry of love. A love that healed, a love that taught forgiveness, a love that befriended the friendless, a love that died so that we might live. And now, a love that teaches us to love as well. Dalton United Methodist Church FEBRUARY 2013 Once a man named Jesus shed his blood so that the world might have life. Years later a little boy lay quietly on a table giving blood so his sister would live. Years later we find ourselves striving to be Christians in a world filled with turmoil, tension and uncertainty; a world desperately in need of hope and assurance. You ve got the answer. Christ lives in you. Won t you consider giving someone a transfusion of Christ s love? Won t you give it today?

4 ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE Ash Wednesday is the official beginning of the Lenten season and is traditionally marked by a worship service using ashes from the palm leaves used last Palm Sunday. The ashes are used to mark the participants with a sign of the cross to show their covenant to observe a holy and penitent Lenten season. Pastor Paul will bring the message and we urge everyone to come and shared this special service. *********************************************************************************** LENT WEDNESDAY SERVICES 9:00 am Once again the Presbyterian Church and Dalton United Methodist Church Lay Leaders have joined to give the community our annual traditional Wednesday 9 am Lent Services. 5 **************************************************************************** HELP WANTED!!! Its time for a change in the leadership of our Fish Fry fund raising project. After five years of taking charge, Jerry and Jane Koontz are stepping down and we are in need of someone, some couple, or some group to take the reigns for this coming year. The Fish Fry project has been a great boost for our church and enjoyed by many throughout our community. Since our first Fry in 2007 the project has netted over $26, for projects within our church. Jerry and Jane have kept a good record of how the project has operated for the past five years, so the new leadership can easily run with the ball. Anyone with questions can call Jerry and Jane to get more information. Many thanks to all who have helped over the past years and we hope they will continue for many more. ************************************************************************************ BIBLE STUDY The Wednesday morning Bible Study group will still meet during Lent on Monday mornings at 9:00 am. They will also gather for the weekly Breakfast and Devotions programs which begin on Ash Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church at 9:00 am. Nothing will ever be able to separate us from the love of God demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ when he died for us. (Romans 8:39 TLB) Issue 2 Page 5

6 News from the United Methodist Women The New Year calendar was officially started with the Kick Off Breakfast at the Das Dutch Kitchen on Saturday the 26th. It was a cold day but we warmed it up with good food, fellowship and an outstanding program by Laura Grimm of her visit to the Space Academy. It was amazing all the things Laura related to us that she learned in five days. She had a time of rewarding education about the space program, which she has incorporated into her teaching. Hope all that came enjoyed it as much as I did. The new program booklets were passed out at the January breakfast. If you did not receive one, please see me and I will be sure you get one. You will want to be sure to get a booklet so you can mark your calendars for upcoming events. We want to thank Joann Watson for her artistic covers and Emily McGinty for completing the booklets. What a good job you both did! The February meeting on Tuesday the 26th at 7:00 PM I am sure will be another informative meeting. We will be holding the meeting at the Church fellowship hall. We are having Karen Geiser from Kidron speaking about Page 6 Inspirations of Gardening. Karen is quite a gardener and I think she will make us excited about the arrival of the spring planting season and how to extend our garden through the year. Come and see the surprises Karen will have for us. On Tuesday, March 26 at 7:00 PM Bess Treisch will be leading the program on Prayer and Self Denial. Please come and hear Bess words of Christian encouragement. I gave the devotions for the Church s Bible study group this month. I read the following poem and had everyone reflect on the fun they had as children in the winter. I hope you enjoy the poem and reflect on your fun times you had as a child. A WONDERFUL WINTER S DAY The first snowfall quietly came, This morning with God s rising sun; He left a blanket clean and white, So we might have some winter fun. Let s break out our boots and our sleds, Find a steep hill to slide on down; We ll play till we can t feel our toes, Then pass the hot chocolate around. We ll light a fire in the clearing, The Monthly Messenger

7 Just big enough to warm our hands; Then call all the children around, Tell them about God s winter plans. How God provides the snow for us, Simply one of His many gifts; Along with the ice on the lake, In His way, our sprits He lifts. We ll cur a hole in the ice and fish, Atop of the ice we can skate; There is so much to see and do, On this, God s wonderful winter day. It s all in how we look at it, Blessings from God or nature s wrath? It depends on what s in our hearts, The answer is as simple as that. By Paul D. Berube (2008) With God s Blessings, I hope you have the right thing in your heart this winter. Christian Women s Prayer Breakfast A special invitation is extended to all area women for the 21st Annual Women's Spring Prayer Breakfast, "Godly Women--God's Riveters" This event takes place on Saturday, March 16, from 8:30-10:30 a.m.at Jake's Restaurant, 6655 East Lincoln Way, Wooster. Music will be provided by Sarah Gentry, and Dr. Amy Jolliff will be speaking. A buffet breakfast will be served for $12 each and is due with your reservation by March 9. (See Beth Johnson for reservation form and more details.) All women are invited to join in a special morning of fellowship, music, inspiration, and prayer. ~Beth Johnson UMW President May those who love the Lord shine as the sun! 10 The Lenten season is a time for a renewed commitment to prayer. Though I do pray for our congregation on a daily basis, I am observing a Lenten discipline of praying for each individual and family by name on a particular day. If you have a specific need or concern that you would like me to pray for, please let me know. Praying for you and your personal joys and concerns is a privilege for me. In addition, I believe my prayer life is deepened by this opportunity as a part of my own Lenten observance. I would encourage you to consider praying for me as your pastor and the other members of our parish as a part of your own personal Lenten journey, too. I pray this time of intentional prayer will make a difference for all of us as a church family.
