1 The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... One beautiful Sunday morning, a minister announced to his congregation: My good people, I have here in my hands three sermons: a $100 sermon that lasts five minutes, a $50 sermon that lasts fifteen minutes, and a $10 sermon that lasts a full hour. Now, we ll take the collection and see which one I ll deliver. He was being just a bit facetious, of course, but he understands the importance of giving. It s interesting that in the Bible, the rich have a hard time letting go of their money, while it is the poor who gives so liberally. The story of the Widow s Mite is a case in point. Down to her last coin, the poor widow throws it into the temple treasury. For her, giving was an act or faith, and a reminder that rich or poor, God expects us to be as generous with our resources as he is generous in his love. The late R.G. LeTourneau, a businessman from Texas, understood the value of giving. In his memoirs, he writes: The question is not how much of my money I give to God, but rather how much of God s money I keep for myself. LeTourneau gave 90 percent of the profits from his company to a Christian foundation, and he and his wife contributed 90 percent of his share of the company s income to the church. Yet, he Dalton United Methodist Church MARCH 2015 and his family never lacked for what they needed. Of course, most of us don t have the money that LeTourneau did. But the question is, Are we being faithful in our giving with what God HAS given us? God loves cheerful givers, the apostle Paul reminds us. So let s get happy! Peace,

6 News from the United Methodist Women Well, the Kickoff Breakfast suffered due to the weather and had to be punted to February 28th. We had a delicious breakfast and fellowship to warm us. The speaker was Melissa Carathers who is the Dalton Elementary/Middle School Counselor. She gave us insight on what her job entails. Back when I went to school there wasn t such a teacher so I found her talk very interesting. The children of this generation have many more advantages than my generation. The new UMW booklets were also passed out with the details of an exciting year to come. I think the booklet covers, handmade by Joann Watson, are the best she has done. I think every year she has done the best but she continues to outdo herself. They are truly a work of Christian art. Thank you so much Joann for doing them for the UMW. If you were unable to attend the breakfast and want to receive a program booklet, the extras will be on the table outside the Church office. Please sign the sheet so we have a record of who has received one. Our next meeting on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 7:00 PM will be held in the Church fellowship hall. Carol Farriss will be giving the devotions on Prayer and Self Denial. Please bring your offerings at that time for the Prayer and Self Denial. Following we will be having a BABY SHOWER to celebrate the coming of Bess Treisch s baby. Doesn t that sound like a joyous occasion? Do hope you all can attend. One program of importance coming up on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 8:30 AM will be a UMW RETREAT. This will be held at the Church fellowship hall and led by Pam Domer. Keep this date open so you don t miss this special day to share with your Christian sisters. Breakfast will be provided by Marjorie Troyer and Clarabel Kurzen and lunch will be available. Don and I share devotion time together after breakfast. We have been using the Upper Room as a guide and a reading. On Ash Wednesday we read the devotion and I would like to share some of the thoughts the writer, Edward L. Kelly, Jr. from Iowa, wrote: He always thought Lent was a time of fasting in the sense of giving up something. The customary question in my faith community is, What are you giving up for Lent? I had never thought about doing anything else as a Lenten practice until one morning when I read the passage from Isaiah 58: 6-7 (God said, Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring homeless poor into your house? ) then later that same morning I encountered a divine example of that passage. Mr. Kelly continued: While I was driving to work I noticed a drably dressed, bearded man standing at busy intersection. He held a sign that read: Homeless Veteran, need help! Instantly, I recalled the words of Isaiah about what kind of fast God Desires: to share your bread with the hungry, and Page 6 Issue 3
7 bring the homeless poor into your house. I gave what help I could to that man. MY LENTEN PRACTICE CHANGED THAT VERY DAY. NOW DURING LENT, MY PRACTICE IS NOT TO GIVE UP SOMETHING BUT TO GIVE SOMETHING TO SOMEONE IN NEED. Mr. Kelly s thoughts are something we all need to try during this and every Lenten season. Giving of yourself during Lent does not have to be only money but you can reach out in many ways. A smile is a wonderfully warm way to start, praying for one another, or just listening when a friend needs you. Start being observant you may be surprised how many ways you can help someone during Lent. Who knows this may become a habit to continue all year. We will be looking forward to seeing you all at the UMW gathering Tuesday, MARCH 24 AT 7:00 PM AT THE CHURCH FELLOWSHIP HALL for Carol Farriss s inspirational message and Bess s Baby Shower. ~Beth Johnson UMW Newsletter Contributor ************************************ COMMUNITY NOTES. The fourth Saturday of each month, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm., drop off your gently used clothing, computers, and household items at the Goodwill truck at the Dalton Community Recycling Area. (Psalm 42:8 TLB) The Monthly Messenger Page 7
