1 The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... Anticipation Hope...Expectation Optimism The grass is green, the trees are budding, and April showers will bring May flowers. By the calendar, winter has ended and spring has begun. The signs of new life are everywhere and the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, who brings us new life, and Easter has come. Old things have passed away, behold all things are becoming new. Because God is continually doing a new thing and wants each of us to be a part of that new thing by being transformed to be more like Jesus. When we submit ourselves to the will of God and listen to the direction of the still small voice of the Holy Spirit, Jesus love can bud and blossom and bloom in our lives like the flowers of spring. Then, others can encounter Christ s love for them by the love that blossoms within each of us. Dalton United Methodist Church APRIL 2018 Sooo, continue to allow the Lord to do a new thing in you and continue to experience the resurrection power of God s love as the Disciples did so long ago. God Bless, Pastor Dave

5 COMING TO DALTON U.M. CHURCH SUNDAY APRIL 29 During the morning worship service Come worship with us on this Sunday. See and hear about God in a unique way. The Puppets of Grace have performed all over Ohio, parts of Pa. And even in Oklahoma. They are holders of many awards in the field of puppetry. Free will offering will be taken. Issue 4 Page 5

6 News from the United Methodist Women I d like to invite all the ladies of the church to the meeting on Tuesday, APRIL 24 AT 7:00 P M To hear Addy Fletcher; Parent Mentor of Ohio, for the Tri-County Educational Services Center, speak about Autism. Many of us know so little about autism. This will be a chance for all of you to learn more about autism and ask questions. Education is the best way for everyone to become an advocate and be aware of what autism is and find ways to help. Don t forget the ALL- DAUGHTER TEA ON SATURDAY, MAY 12 AT 2:00 PM. This will be a special time to celebrate being a daughter. No matter what age you are you are still someone s daughter. Hope we will fill the fellowship hall with merriment and laughter. The next date to put on your calendar is SUNDAY, JULY 22 AT 4:00 PM. Ed & Sharon Starling have graciously invited everyone to an ice cream social at their home. Their address is 5008 Shreve Rd, Wooster. This event will be for the whole church family! Sure hope you all can come!! SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, AT 8:00 AM The UMW will be making vegetable soup. I am reminding you about this early so if you plant a garden you can plant with this in mind. This has become a yearly tradition of the UMW. So many people look forward to receiving a quart or pint of soup. This is a wonderful way to reach out to shut- ins and people who need a helping hand. It is a way to show them someone cares and hasn t forgotten them. These are good times to look forward to and share time with our church family. The UMW Sunday really turned out to be a very special day. The guest speaker, Brian Ziegler, is a true Christian. It came through in his message about how he became a Christian. Christ has truly helped him turn his life around and help him get through many ruff times full of poor decisions. I am thankful (as I am sure I share the same thought with all who were there) to have had the privilege to hear his message. Sharon Starling was completely surprised to be the UMW Woman of the Year. Sharon you do deserve the honor for all you do for the church and UMW. Congratulations! After church the fellowship hall was filled with good fellowship, tasty soups and bread and delicious desserts. Remember if you didn t get Broccoli Cheese Soup, Dixie will no doubt be making more at the Cookie Walk/ Luncheon on December 1. It was a day to remember! This year Easter falls on April Fool s Day which is April first. The last time this happened was Since 1900 the Easter and April Fool s Day have only fallen on the same day four times on 1923, 1943, 1945 and It won t happen again till While the Bible does not mention "Easter," it's believed the name comes from early celebrations of the pre-christian goddess Eostre, who was typically celebrated at the beginning of spring. Eostre's name remained as early Christians marked the time of Jesus' resurrection and the title survived through history, though it was changed to "Easter" by English speaking Christians. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the spring equinox. The spring equinox occurred on March 20 this year. The Easter season coincides with Passover, one of the most important festivals on the Jewish calendar. In 2018, Passover will begin on the evening of Friday, March 30 and ends in the evening of Saturday, April 7. Passover commemorates the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. That is a little information about Easter and then I got to wondering about April fool s Day and where did it get started. In 1700, English pranksters begin popularizing the annual tradition of April Fools Day by playing practical jokes on each other. Although the day has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, its exact origins remain a mystery. Some historians speculate that April Fools Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes. Page 6 The Monthly Messenger

7 People would make house calls on others to make them believe the new year was still April 1 and they were there for a celebration to trick them. Another trick was placing a paper fish on people s backs and being referring to them as poisson d avril (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish or a gullible person. Historians have also linked April Fools Day to ancient festivals such as Hilaria, which was celebrated in Rome at the end of March and involved people dressing up in disguises. There s also speculation that April Fools Day was tied to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather. April Fools Day spread throughout Britain during the 18th century. Also in Scotland, the tradition became a two-day event, starting with hunting the gowk, in which people were sent on phony errands (gowk is a word for cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool) and followed by Tailie Day, which involved pranks played on people s back side such as pinning fake tails or kick me signs on them. This was similar to that of the April fish. In modern times, people have gone to great lengths to create elaborate April Fools Day hoaxes. Newspapers, radio and TV stations and Web sites have participated in the April 1 tradition of reporting outrageous fictional claims that have fooled their audiences. In 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from trees. In the broadcast, it was told to start the plants after receiving them in spaghetti sauce. The cultivation was made in a straight faced manner. The spaghetti s oddly uniform length was explained as the result of years of dedicated cultivation. They also told, The ravenous spaghetti weevil which had wreaked havoc with harvests of years past had been conquered. After hearing the broadcast many people flooded the phone lines, wanting more information on the spaghetti plants and how to buy them. In 1985, Sports Illustrated tricked many of its readers when it ran a made-up article about a rookie pitcher named Sidd Finch who could throw a fastball over 168 miles per hour. In 1996, Taco Bell, the fast-food restaurant chain, duped people when it announced it had agreed to purchase Philadelphia s Liberty Bell and intended to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell. In 1998, after Burger King advertised a Left-Handed Whopper, scores of clueless customers requested the fake sandwich. I can remember trying to play fun tricks on classmates and family when I was young. Do you have such memories? Now for something to share with you that is not so silly. It is a poem titled TEN COMMANDMENTS OF HUMAN RELATIONS. 1. Speak to people. There is nothing as nice as a cheerful word of greeting. 2. Smile at people. It takes 72 muscles to frown-only 14 to smile. 3. Call people by name. The sweetest music to anyone s ears is the sound of their own name. 4. Be friendly and helpful. Everyone needs a helping hand at some time. 5. Be cordial. Speak and act as if everything you do is a genuine pleasure. 6. Be genuinely interested in people. They will feel your concern. 7. Be generous with praise-cautious with criticism. 8. Be considerate of feelings of others. It will be appreciated. 9. Be thoughtful of the opinions of others. There are three sides to a controversy-yours, the other guy s and the right one. 10. Be alert to give service. What counts most in life is what we do for others. God Bless you all Beth Johnson UMW Newsletter Contributor The quiet words of a wise man are better than the shout of a king of fools. (Ecclesiastes 9:17 TLB) Issue 4 Page 7
