The Monthly Messenger Dalton United Methodist Church JUNE 2017 A Note From The Pastor... As I sit here in my office, the words won t come to me. 36 years! How can it possibly be? And yet, memories, events and so many people...they race through my mind. Where has the time gone? It seems as though it was only a short time since I baptized my first infant, celebrated at my first wedding ceremony and presided at the funeral of a pillar of the church. I know July 1st is coming and it won t be too much longer. Retirement is one of the hallmarks of one s life. It is the crowning achievement for a job well done. And even in my retirement years, I am still ordained and can perform these same duties. Yet, I do them but not as often. I will be free to do the things that I have put off or not taken the time to do for so long. I look forward to the freedom that retirement holds and yet, I will truly miss the responsibility of pastoring a local congregation. For 36 years, I had a routine of preparing services, meetings, visiting folks and so forth. It will truly seem strange not to do those things week in and week out. I guess I have mixed emotions and I bet some of you have experienced these feelings as well. I would like to take just a moment though to thank my wonderful wife, Lynn. For nearly 33 years her dedication and willingness to put up with me and the job that comes with the ministry is so deeply appreciated. I thank my children, Kristy and Jon too. Being a PK in school isn t an easy life either. But they have made me so proud. And I also thank my son-in-law Travis, and my late parents and my late father -in-law, Fred, and my mother-in-law, Marilyn as well. They, too, realize the amount of time and energy the ministry requires. But most of all I want to express my sincere and heartfelt thanks to the members and friends of The Dalton United Methodist Church and all the other parishes that I had the honor and privilege to serve. To come to an area that is unfamiliar to you, have no knowledge of or relatives near, to start with a blank slate so to say and build a life around is no small task. And yet, all of you have made it possible. We feel as though you made us a part of the community that we served and we will truly miss seeing you and being a part of your future. Dalton, you are receiving a wonderful couple in David and Paulette Martin. Although I do not know them well, I can tell you that they will be a tremendous influence at the church and in the community. I will pray for them and for you as you continue to do God s work in Dalton and the surrounding area. As a final word, remember the familiar saying God is Good, All the Time and All the Time, God is Good. Remember that God is present with you and is always working with you and for you. And remember that good things come from a wonderful relationship with God. Build that relationship by studying the Word, enjoy fellowship with one another and be bold by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with everyone you meet. With Love and Blessings Always,

News from the United Methodist Women The UMW finally got a start this year with having breakfast at the Time Out Café. At the start I gave everyone a paper with a list of activities the UMW had done in the past. I asked everyone to decide which things are the most important to keep and how would they be able to help. The most important was that all who were there wanted to work to keep the UMW going. Amen to that!!! After checking the sheets the most votes were given to making soup for the shut-ins and the cookie walk and most said they would help. One person mentioned they really liked the meetings on Saturday mornings. They did not like to go out in the evenings. That is a good thought. We had a few votes for the Prayer of Self Denial and the Thank Offering. One person spoke of wanting to set up a one day retreat. So it sounds as if the UMW is alive and going strong with God s help and everyone working together. Myrna Streb, vice president, Jane Koontz, secretary and Sharon Starling, treasurer and I will be putting together a schedule for the rest of the year. Of course during June and July the UMW does not normally meet. This year due to a late start we could not have a Woman of the Year on UMW Sunday. We did recognized all the ladies (Oh! and Harry Weibel who was chosen one year) who were Woman of the Year from the past. We did this during a very busy Sunday morning service on May 21. During that service was the last for the children s choir to sing and play bells before their summer break. Everyone gave Bev McGinty a special thank you for the dedication and work she does in directing the children. The graduates Dylan Domer, Nina Schultz, Cory Merriman, and Taylor Reynolds were honored during the service. Maggie Conrad introduced the grads and she had an extra surprise for Nina and Dylan. She had T- shirts for them. For Nina a pink one with ballet slippers and for Dylan a bright orange one with a big smile to match the one he always has. The speaker for the UMW Sunday was Raylene Hlavilty portraying Fannie Crosby. If you weren t there you really missed a great performance by Raylene because you really believed Fannie was there. She did an excellent job portraying Fannie and bringing her to life. So many ladies gave of their time to make UMW Sunday a success. I tried calling everyone who helped and I hope I didn t miss anyone. Because of everyone working together made an awesome morning. Thank you to you all. Becky Jones gave me information about a family named Stone, Nate, Rachael, Aebrie, Taedym, Landon, and Kinslaey. They are a family from Ohio who are hoping to create a bi-lingual Latin American rescue center that reaches at risk students in the fight against human trafficking and actively restoring their identity in Christ. They hope to establish the program in the Dominican Republic. They completely rely on the support of ministry partners. This sounds as if this is something the UMW might like to look into and possibly lend support. The UMW do hope to bring you more information about the Stone s and their mission later in the fall. Some months ago I wrote about things that are awesome. I have another one to add to the list. Don, Garrick and I drove to Garrick s home in Missouri. We left on that surprising snowy morning in April. That wasn t the awesome part. Well, maybe because we made it to Missouri. The really awesome part was coming home. When Don and I left, it was before dawn. The sky was so very dark on our left and there was lightening strikes one after another with claps of loud thunder. On our right the moon and stars were shining brightly. I hope you can picture it because it was awesome! Another surprising part was we never got in the rain. I have a new word for you to think about this month. JOY! Adela Rogers St. Johns says, Joy seems to be a step beyond happiness - happiness is a sort of atmosphere you can live in sometimes, when you re lucky. Joy is a light that fills you with hope and faith and love. Another writer, Anne Lamott, said, Gratitude, not understanding, is the secret to joy. Each of us has the choice of finding joy in the moment or drudgery. It is in our daily choice of how to approach and accept Page 6 The Monthly Messenger

all the details of our life with a happy heart that makes all the difference and brings joy. As you know from past newsletters I enjoy reading the words to songs and hymns. This song I Dreamed of Rain I first heard when Sonnenberg Station sang it and it has such a beautiful melody that stays with you. I had to look up the words to really understand it. It is a rather new song which was written recorded in2003 by Jan Garrett and has won many awards. You may not see the word joy in it but as you read the words it is there. I hope you can bring it up on your computer and listen to the music. I Dreamed of Rain Words & Music by Jan Garrett 1) I dreamed of rain, and the rains came Soft and easy, sweet and clear I dreamed of rain, and the rains came, and peace spread over the land 2) I dreamed of summer, and the winds changed And the green was easy, and the rivers ran clear I dreamed of summer, and the winds changed, and peace spread over the land And the flowers bloom in the desert, And the air is fresh and clear I dreamed of rain, and the rains came, and peace spread over the land 3) I dreamed of freedom, and the moon rose And the way was easy, and the path was clear I dreamed of freedom, and the moon rose, and peace spread over the land And the guardian stars are shining And the night is bright and clear I dreamed of freedom, and the moon rose, and peace spread over the land 4) I dreamed of heaven, and the earth sang And the sound was easy, and the song was clear I dreamed of heaven, and the earth sang, and peace spread over the land And the ancient pain is forgotten And the father s debts are clear I dreamed of heaven, and the earth sang, and peace spread over the land. During this month, think, listen and look at what does give you JOY! The more you think about what brings you joy the happier you will be. God Bless, Beth Johnson UMW President The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the Word of our God shall stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8 TLB) Issue 6 Page 7

God s Grace In March of this year, Brad received a letter from the Virginia Beach Police Department, stating that he was receiving a Life Saving Citizen s award and the ceremony was on May 19. Last year in June, while on a Jones Family vacation, we were on the beach when Brad pulled a victim out of the water and Rachel Jones helped to save her. When the EMS arrived on the beach her pulse had returned and she seemed to make a recovery. Everything happened so fast that we were not able to talk to anyone to find out how she was. We learned the next day from a patrol on the beach that she made a full recovery and was released form the hospital. The victim s name we were told was Grace. Brad, Becky, Callie, and Collin attended the ceremony on May 19 in Virginia Beach. Brad along with four of Grace s family members received the award. Grace was alive because God put us where he needed us to be to do his work. This is truly, God s Grace. Our DUMC Praise Choir provided beautiful music to celebrate Mother's Day. And we had a special treat to have Maggie Conrad 's grandson Cy alongside her singing today What goes better with a hot Memorial Day parade than nice cold ice cream?!! We were on the front lawn today passing out sweet treats to everyone who was in and watching the parade. It feels so good to give to this wonderful community! Page 8 The Monthly Messenger

Dylan Domer graduated from Ida Sue School on May 24,2017. He had been attending their programs for most of his life, starting when he was just 9 months old. The last 3 years he has been at a satellite classroom of Ida Sue at John R Lea in Southeast Local School District. He participated in many school and community events, one being a favorite Ticket Taker for our church Fish Fries. He has been an active member of Boy Scouts, and he has worked with other troops to advocate for individuals with disabilities. Dylan is a 4 Star Recipient of the Programs of Religious Activities with Youth. (P.R.A.Y) In 2009, he was presented The Exchange Club of America s Young Citizenship Award. This year Dylan was honored as the Wayne County recipient of the R. A. Horn Outstanding Achievement Award for a student. After graduation, he will be attending Midwest Community Services in the old YMCA in Dalton. He is very excited to be moving on to new things to do and meet new people, but will very much miss the many people at Ida Sue that have helped him so much in his life s journey thus far. ************************************************************************************************ Nina Schultz was born to Lee Scott and Karen Schultz, on November 10, She went to Bright Beginnings Preschool and started attending Dalton in Kindergarten. When she was 8 years old, she began dancing classical ballet at Wayne Center Ballet, then followed her instructors to Ballet Wooster in She has participated in many ballet productions, such as The Nutcracker, and her latest and last performance, The Enchanted Toy Shop. After graduation, she plans on attending the University of Akron: Wayne College Campus for her core classes, then transferring to another campus for classes pertaining to her major. She would like to thank the members of the church family and friends for all the years they have supported her. Issue 6 Page 9
