1 The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... If holidays can be said to be a color, for me, Thanksgiving is a brown holiday something other than the frenzied red of the secular Christmas, the holy white of Easter, the patriotic red, white and blue of July 4th or the garish black and orange of Halloween. Brown is a peaceful, earthly tone, suggestive of fallen leaves, dried corn stalks and landscapes at rest after the harvest. A peaceful color is appropriate for the day. Other than a trip to the grocery store, there is, thank goodness, no shopping season in preparation for Thanksgiving. There are no office parties, no tinsel and no obligatory gift exchanges. More than any other special day, Thanksgiving remains private and personal. And, as someone has said, no one is complaining that they have somehow taken the thanks out of Thanksgiving. No one has needed to make that complaint, for even the most hardened of us recognize that undeserved blessings come our way. Some who are less conversant with the vocabulary of the church might substitute good luck or opportunities for blessings, but the fact remains that the majority of us are aware that life graces us with gifts we ve done nothing to earn. Most of us absorbed the meaning of Thanksgiving Day as first-graders when we portrayed Pilgrims in construction paper hats or bonnets or friendly Indians in cardboard feathers we d color with crayons. We learned that the day was for offering thanks. Christians have an advantage at Dalton United Methodist Church NOVEMBER 2016 Thanksgiving because we know who to thank, Our faith provides a perspective that enables us to see that boons and bounty are not something owed to us, but gifts from a loving God. Christians understand that even in hard times when obvious blessings seem scarce, we are still abundantly graced with life itself a wonderful gift and with the abiding presence of God. As you offer thanks to God on that special day this month, may the brown peace of gratitude flood your soul. Thankfully, Peace,

All around the world today, Christians suffer at the hands of those who oppose the Name of Jesus Christ. Hundreds of Christian leaders, advocates, and victims of persecution from many countries will be invited to come together to address this scourge. Original plans were to hold the meeting in Moscow, but government changes there have caused this event to be moved to Washington, D.C. Pray for our brothers and sisters in the Lord who endure so much for their faith. Do you want more and more of God s kindness and peace? Then learn to know him better and better. For as you know him better, he will give you, through his great power, everything you need for living a truly good life: he even shares his own glory and his own goodness with us! 6 News from the United Methodist Women ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29 AT 7:00 PM, JOANN WATSON IS GIVING THE THANK OFFERING PROGRAM AT THE CHURCH. I know Joann will have an inspiring program. Hope you will all be able to come and enjoy the evening. Also at this meeting we will finalize plans for the COOKIE WALK, BAKE SALE, AND LUNCHEON, WHICH WILL BE ON DECEMBER 3 FROM 9 AM TO 2 PM. Hope all the UMW are starting to bake cookies and goodies for the bake sale. We always need lots of cookies and if everyone could make at least 12 dozen it would make a tremendous cookie walk. Last year we tried the bake sale for the first time and we had a great success. The people who came to the cookie walk liked to pick up the baked items to take home or give as gifts. The UMW appreciate all you can do to make the day a success. Before long the Christmas decorations will be going up in the church. Be sure to watch for one special tree, that being the ANGEL TREE. The UMW will again be sponsoring the ANGEL TREE project. It is done through the Salvation Army and it helps a family have a very special Christmas which they would not have had without our gifts. Please consider taking a tag from the tree and buying a gift for a needy family. The UMW made vegetable soup on November 15 for the shut-ins. There were many hands on board to help. There were 35 quarts and 35 pints when we finished and the jars were full. Did it ever smell delicious! Also we were Page 6 treated to a light breakfast by Mary Loomis and Sharon Starling. While we snacked we had a short business meeting and Bev McGinty said she would organize the THANKSGIVING MEAL FOR CHURCH ON NOVEMBER 13. If you have not yet volunteered to help, please speak to Bev. I know she will be very happy for any help you can give. Have you ever said, That is awesome? I read an article in the Parade paper which comes in the Wooster Daily Record on Sundays. It was about feeling AWE! A psychologist, Dacher Keltner, says that awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast or beyond human scale that transcends our current understanding of things. Bet you all can come up with a lot of times you were in awe. Think about that and what Mr. Keltner s definition. In the article the experts have discovered this about awe: it binds us together, it helps us see things in new ways, it makes us nicer and happier and it alters our bodies. They say on the average of 2.5 times a week people feel awe. What are ways to find awe in everyday life? Drop the devices and gaze at the clouds or stars. Visit a local, state or national park. Take an Awe Walk in your neighborhood, noticing things as if for the first time. Describe to a friend or write about a time you once felt awe. Visit a museum or planetarium. Get up early to watch the sunrise. Play amazing music. Give them a try. There are many times in my life I have felt awe but I d like to tell you about The Monthly Messenger

7 one. I was 19 and my girlfriend and I drove to California in her VW. On the way back we stopped overnight in Provo, Utah. We met some people and they said they would show us the most awesome thing on earth. They did! We went up a mountain outside of Provo. It was dark and was I glad because it was a very narrow road with shear drop offs. When we had an oncoming car, one or the other had to back up to a pull off. Finally we reached the top. It was the awesome sight they promised! It was total darkness except for all the stars. There was no moon that night. There was one shooting star after another. Never knew there could be so many stars or shooting stars. All I could say was that it was just awesome. I remember it today as if it had just happened. I wondered what the Bible had to say about awe. I looked it up on the computer. It said there are 20 places it refers to awe. I won t list them all here but I will tell you a few. In Psalm 33: 8 it says: Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him! In Genesis 28: 17: He was afraid and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. One more is in Exodus 15:11: Who is like You among gods, O Lord? Who is like You majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders? One last thought I found in the study of Romans. In the commentary the author said that Paul had a point and it is: We should stand in awe of God because He designs and controls all of history to display His faithfulness to His promises and the glory of His mercy to sinners. Try to find how many times you find awe in the Bible and in your daily lives. It may surprise you how many times it happens. Don t forget the THANKSGIVING MEAL ON NOVEMBER 13 AFTER CHURCH AND THE THANK OFFERING PROGRAM ON NOVEMBER 29 AT 7:00 PM AT THE CHURCH. Like the advertisement says, We ll leave the light on for you. Sure hope you ll be baking cookies and goodies for the December 3 Cookie Walk, Bake Sale and Luncheon, which will be held from 9:00 am to 2;00pm. God Bless, ~Beth Johnson, UMW President I am with you, and will protect you wherever you go...i will be with you constantly until I have finished giving you all I am promising. 8 Today for Youth Sunday our youth ran the service. The message was one of appreciation. We at the Dalton United Methodist Church are incredibly thankful for our youth and the wonderful congregation that supports them. The positive impact the church family has on the children will be with them the rest of their lives. Thank you all!
