1 The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... On the 14th of this month, millions of people will be exchanging gifts and mementos posing the question: Will you be my Valentine? Florists will sell more red roses on this day than any other day of the year and more chocolates and jewelry will be purchased in great quantities as well. You will see more red hearts and cupids with arrows that week than all the other weeks of the year combined. Valentine s Day is a day that s all about love - romantic love. But romantic love isn t the only kind of love in the world. It s one type of love, but not the only type. The story is told of a certain William Dixon who lived in Brackenthwaite, England. He was a widower who had also lost his only son. One day, he saw that the house of one of his neighbors was on fire. Although the aged owner was rescued, her orphaned grandson was trapped in the blaze. Dixon climbed an iron pipe on the side of the house and lowered the boy to safety. His hand that held onto the pipe was badly burned. Shortly after the fire, the grandmother died. The townspeople wondered who would care for the boy. Two volunteers appeared before the town council. One was a father who had lost a son and would like to adopt the orphan as his own. William Dixon was to speak next, but instead of saying anything, he merely held up his scarred hand. When the vote was taken, the people of the town decided that the boy should live with the one whop had risked his life to save him. That s a very special kind of love. It s a sacrificial love that places the needs of others above our own. Dalton United Methodist Church FEBRUARY 2017 It s the kind of love with which our Savior loved us. And he needs only to raise his nail-scarred hands for us to know that it is with him that we should live, and it is for him that we serve others. Peace,

All around the world today, Christians suffer at the hands of those who oppose the Name of Jesus Christ. Hundreds of Christian leaders, advocates, and victims of persecution from many countries will be invited to come together to address this scourge. Original plans were to hold the meeting in Moscow, but government changes there have caused this event to be moved to Washington, D.C. Pray for our brothers and sisters in the Lord who endure so much for their faith. Therefore, my beloved brethren be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:58) Page 4 The Monthly Messenger

6 News from the United Methodist Women Hello, I waited to the last minute to write this in hopes I would have good news for you about the UMW. I do have some. Glenda Wyckoff said she would take the position of Vice President if she could have a co-vice president or help. Unfortunately we have not had been able to find someone to volunteer. Would you care to help? I hope the voice I just heard was yours saying, Yes, I will help. We need to get the year going and need to do some planning to have a successful year. If it was your yes I heard, let me know so we can get to work. You should see the table in our new room. We call it that because it is part of the addition we put onto the house over thirty years ago. Maybe we should rename it the newest room. Don and I were cleaning out a closet and there were books we haven t even looked at for maybe twenty years. You know how things get shoved onto a shelf and forgotten. Well they have got to go! Well, maybe just one more look. I picked up one and opened its cover and it had been given to my mom in 1973 the same year our son was born. I started thumbing through and it had two markers put there many a year ago. One I would like to share. It is titled I WOULD GIVE YOU THIS. If I could give each one of you a gift this winter season this is what it would be. I would wrap it with the glistening white of new fallen snow, and fasten it with a garland of evergreen. It would shine with the brilliance of the heavens lighted by the stars of winter. It would be a large package for it would contain many things. There would be a music box that would tinkle like the song of a tree sparrow intermingled with the sweet tones of the snow-birds. I would pluck some twigs of red maple, heavy with the red buds that cast a rosy glow over gray bark in winter sunlight. Hymns and dramatic music of great masters would be in your box. There would be a lullaby by the south wind in a forest of pines, and the lyrics of a woodland brook still pursuing its course between ice-encrusted banks. There would be a medley sung by the chickadee, nuthatch, and titmouse, interrupted by the drumming of woodpeckers and the staccato chattering of squirrels. A crashing of cymbals and brass in a mighty symphony composed during a dramatic winter storm would stir your imagination. Page 6 The Monthly Messenger
7 Jack Frost would donate an etching wrought on glass, and the King of the North would fashion an alabaster work of sculpture as he molded deep drifts of snow. All day I would spend collecting these works of art for you. Last of all, I would tuck in some extra hours in your day so that you, too, could go outdoors to the storehouse where the work of our Maker manifests itself so abundantly. With the good earth beneath your feet and the broad expanse of sky stretching overhead, refreshment of body and mind would come to help you play your part in bringing peace on earth, goodwill among men. What beautiful these words these are, that paint a picture in your mind that you can see and almost feel! My mom had tucked in the book a prayer called Intercessory Prayer. I said a prayer for you today And I know God must have heard, I felt the answer in my heart, Although he spoke no word. I didn t ask for wealth or fame I knew you wouldn t mind, I asked him to send treasures Of a far more lasting kind! I asked that he d be near you At the start of each new day To grant you health and blessings And friends to share your way! I asked for happiness for you In all things great and small. Issue 2 But it was for his loving care I prayed for most of all! Needless to say the book will go back on a shelf but on one I can get to and be able to read it more often. I might find more to share with you someday. May you have many blessings from God every day. As Don says everyday is one day closer to spring. God Bless, ~Beth Johnson UMW President For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. (Psalm 84:11) Page 7
8 The CIA youth group was hard at work Sunday morning, January 22nd; creating signs for the Operation Christmas Child drive and birthday cards to give to the youth in our church throughout the year. Their upcoming mission work will be showing some love to all God's creatures by leading a drive for the Wayne County Humane Society. Stay tuned for further details. 10 Dear Dalton United Methodist Church, On behalf of everyone at the Dalton Holidays Festival Committee, we would like to thank you for your generous support and sponsorship. Our festival is the kickoff to the Christmas season, with many local families traditions beginning with the various festival events, music, contests, and shows. Through numerous donations, we give back to assorted booster groups, the schools, local charities, and churches. We feel that by working together we can accomplish the true meaning of Christmas, while bringing back the memories of the magic of Christmas today, just like memories of our childhood. Sincerely, ~ The 2016 Dalton Holidays Festival Committee ************************************************************************************** Quoting Franklin Graham: As we begin 2017, let s commit ourselves afresh to love and honor the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us pray for our leaders. Pray for spiritual awakening across our land. Pray for revival of souls in our churches. My hope is not in either party. It is in Almighty God. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. says: It is urgently important that Christians affirm that we are not smarter or more morally righteous than those around us. We are instead the beneficiaries of grace and mercy of God because we have come to know salvation through Christ, and guidance in faithful living through the gift of the Holy Spirit.
