2 Local A2 Newfoud schools to adopt Eureka math curriculum BY THOMAS P. CALDWELL Cotributig Writer BRISTOL The Newfoud Area School District will be switchig to a ew mathematics curriculum that admittedly will be challegig, but which will see studets build their skills upo a strog foudatio, accordig to curriculum coordiator Therese Wetherigto. The Newfoud Area School Board voted to sped $24,797 i uecumbered year-ed fuds to purchase textbooks ad workbooks to implemet the Eureka Math program ext year. It will replace the Everyday Math curriculum curretly i use. Wetherigto said Everyday Math was hailed as a breakthrough whe it was itroduced, ad may school districts adopted the teachig method that moves quickly through math skills i order to expose studets to a variety of cocepts. The problem, she said, is that is a oe-size-fits-all curriculum that leaves studets behid if they do ot grasp a cocept before the class moves o to aother. We use it, but it did ot do very well, she said. I cotrast to that approach, Eureka Math, based upo Commo Core cocepts, puts a greater focus o fewer topics i order to emphasize coherece i the lessos ad rigor i coceptual uderstadig, procedural skills, ad applicatios BRISTOL Due to a typographical error, a article published i last week's editio about the Newfoud School Board's reluctace to sped from the district's curret budget surplus cotaied a passage cocerig the district's lease o the SAU office that did ot read as iteded by our correspodet. The passage i questio should have read as follows: Limai said that, while the of kowledge. Durig a presetatio to the school board o May 9, Wetherigto reviewed how the program works, based o Commo Core State Stadards, begiig i kidergarte. Studets begi by learig cocepts ad procedures, ad proceed o to problem-solvig oce they have mastered the earlier material. She emphasized that the teachers will focus o idividual achievemet so a studet does ot move o util the teacher is cofidet that the targets have bee met. Next, studets move ito commuicatig ad reasoig, buildig viable argumets to support their ow reasoig ad to critique others. Fially, they get ito modelig ad data aalysis, usig mathematical models to iterpret ad solve real-life problems. Wetherigto said teachers have bee focusig o kidergarte through Grade 5 for the past couple of years, recogizig the importace of groudig the studets i a solid uderstadig of math at a early age. She praised the school board for recogizig the importace of all-day kidergarte ad oted that havig access to computers helps teachers by ehacig their lessos. I order to teach the ew Commo Core lessos, teachers first Correctio SAU office is owed by TD Bak, there is a possibility of the district acquirig the buildig. He said he would ot recommed spedig the moey without owership or a log-term lease. Curretly, the district s use is o a moth-tomoth lease. The Newfoud Ladig deeply regrets ay cofusio that may have resulted from this uitetioal error. How to Submit Aoucemets & Obituaries To Salmo Press Publicatios have to lear about the process themselves, movig away from rote learig to focus o cocepts ad skills. You eed to justify how you got the aswer, said Wetherigto, who is familiar with Commo Core from her earlier work elsewhere. Wetherigto oted that purchasig a whole ew set of textbooks is a expesive decisio, so they waited for studies to determie which textbooks are the most effective ad alig most closely with Commo Core. Eureka Math, published by Great Mids, a small Washigto-based oprofit orgaizatio, was foud to be aliged to the Commo Core State Stadards at all grade levels reviewed. School board member Christie Davol of New Hampto, who teaches at Gilford Elemetary School, said they had recetly adopted Eureka Math. It s bee a huge chage, she said, but I m very excited about it. I thik it s a great program, ad love that we re askig studets to thik harder i a commo-sese way. I feel these studets are completely capable of doig this, but they have to pay attetio ad liste to the teacher, or they ll struggle. It makes studets resposible for their ow learig. She added, I love math, ad I was ot a math-lover before. Wetherigto said, Oe textbook is ot the aswer to everythig, ad we will wat to supplemet the lessos with techology, ad she also oted that teachers will eed to pay close attetio to where studets are academically to make it work. If a studet gets a Your Favorite Decorator For Sewig doe right Jodie Favorite Ower 80 o a test, you eed to look at what they re missig ad focus o that, to take care of that hole, she said. It ll probably be five years before you really see a shift i test scores. Superitedet Stacy Buckley summed it up, sayig, We ve got to make a chage. [Everyday Math] is ot workig. What we buy ow will be good for some time, with o revisio i the textbooks plaed for at least three years. It gives teachers back some autoomy, but also works o the commo framework. The school board uaimously supported the purchase of the ew curriculum. 4 Opiio A4 Thursday, MAY 19, 2016 Decrimializatio of marijuaa would add to curret drug crisis BY KATE FREY Deputy Director New Futures New Futures disagrees with the recetly published editorial i the Portsmouth Herald i support of decrimializig the possessio of marijuaa. House Bill 1631, which was itroduced this past legislative cycle ad was voted dow i the Seate, would have allowed a half ouce of marijuaa (the equivalet of joits) to be decrimialized uder New Hampshire law. New Hampshire is i the throes of a opioid ad heroi epidemic. Now is ot the time to decrimialize a addictive substace. The Ceters for Disease Cotrol published a morbidity ad mortality report titled Vital Sigs: Demographic ad Substace Use Treds Amog Heroi Users. The report aalyzed data from 2002 to 2013, ad foud that the problem of heroi abuse or depedece is ot occurrig i isolatio. Past-year alcohol, marijuaa, cocaie, ad opioid pai reliever abuse or depedece were each sigificat risk factors for heroi abuse or depedece. The study also reported 96 percet of past-year heroi users reported use of at least oe other drug durig the past year. Those workig i the field of New Hampshire substace misuse are, sadly, ot surprised by the recet epidemic sice youth drug use is a key determiat of well-beig, ad the Graite State already has some of the highest rates i the coutry. The Partership for a Drug- Free New Hampshire s Check the Stats campaig demostrated that 29.7 percet of youth over age 12 said there was o risk associated with usig marijuaa oce or twice a week. Whe youth fail to perceive the harm associated with drug use, rates of drug use by youth have bee show to rise. The Natioal Ceter o Addictio ad Substace Abuse reported that 90 percet of Americas who met the criteria for addictio started smokig, drikig or usig other drugs before age 18. Lastly, there is o disputig the evidece that marijuaa use early i life ca harm brai developmet ad lead to addictio. Regular marijuaa users who started smokig before the age of 16 had marked differeces o MRI scas, accordig to a recet study published i the joural of Developmetal Cogitive Neurosciece. The drug ca have developmetal damage o thikig, memory, ad learig fuctios. With other states decrimializig marijuaa, New Hampshire has the opportuity to aalyze emergig data treds ad should proceed with cautio, especially i light of the curret drug crisis. New Futures is a opartisa, oprofit orgaizatio that advocates, educates ad collaborates to prevet ad reduce alcohol ad other drug problems i New Hampshire. Last moth, the board uderstood that the Tow of Hill would provide the service to the Blake School. The tow s isurer, though, advised the selectme that it would be a liability, ad they decided to withdraw the offer. Bergquist said it costs $140 a moth, or $1,680 a year, to have weekly trash pickup, but the budget does ot have that much moey i the accout. Lewis suggested tryig a pickup schedule of oce every two weeks durig the summer, whe less rubbish is geerated, to stay withi the budget. 13 Seior Projects FROM PAGE A1 display. The projects are desiged as a core requiremet for graduatio that requires studets to advace their learig through research o a project of their choice. Amy Yeakel is the Exteded Learig leader ad Seior Project Coordiator at NRHS, ad was pleased to preset a few of the may outstadig projects that studets submitted this year. We ask them to fid somethig they re iterested i, the stretch it i some way where they step out of their comfort zoe ad explore ew thigs, Yeakel explaied. Zach Gould of Bridgewater was iflueced by a horticulture course he took i school that spurred his iterest i plat growth. As a result he costructed a woode hydropoic herb garde that ow has basil, mit, rosemary, ad curly parsley sproutig uder its grow lights. We re growig up i a time whe ot everyoe has room for traditioal gardes, so I built this as a alterative. I leared a lot while doig itmore tha I thought I would, said Gould. He will be headig off to the service after graduatio but as a partig gift, he is leavig his hydropoic garde to the school s sciece departmet. Seior Alicia Meega of Bristol is iterested i political sciece ad before she heads off to Stoehill College i Easto, Mass., she decided to coduct a experimet i eyewitess testimoy. There ca be a lot of faults i eyewitess testimoy so I wated to see how accurate or iaccurate it could be due to memory errors ad outside factors, said Meega. She elisted the help of Eglish teacher David Harlow who allowed her to have a staged verbal fight erupt i his classroom. A studet was set i to start a cofrotatio with Harlow i frot of a class filled with ususpectig witesses. Assistat Pricipal Chris Ulrich stepped i to cotrol the situatio ad take what appeared to be legitimate statemets from them all. Meega the re-iterviewed the studets a week later ad compared those results with the statemets Ulrich obtaied. I lookig them over she foud may of those witesses had chaged their stories somewhat sice the icidet occurred. Oly half of them eve remembered the face of the studet who started it all, she said. Her coclusio, i part, was that may people ideed forget or alter may details of a icidet i their mid ad, i time, ca eve imagie some thigs that actually ever took place. Bridgewater seior Mike Herig also had a outstadig project that actually caot be discussed i detail because he hopes it will evetually become a marketable product. His research cetered o how music has iflueced culture through the decades ad ways i which a particular music gere ca become a reflectio of cultures i the Uited States. With music ow becomig more persoal through ear buds ad other sigular listeig devices though his project hopes to chage that oe day soo. What I the did was prototype a music applicatio that would allow music to be more of a social experiece- agai! I ll possibly patet this idea i the future but first I eed to get to college where I ca build up my adroid skills ad lear more tools to make this a reality, said Herig. It s basically all about how people ca use moder music to be social agai. He will be pursuig those skills through his egieerig studies at the Uiversity of Colorado i Boulder ext fall. Bristol s Alissa Keeler was the fial studet Yeakel chose to spotlight whose project covered yet aother field of study. Next year Keeler will be attedig Plymouth State Uiversity for a ursig degree. Comig from a family that is ivolved i the medical field, she realized there are may differet areas of ursig available i a hospital eviromet but was ucertai as to which of those she would like to focus o i her ow career. Last summer, she joied the Carig Studet Itership at Lakes Regio Geeral Hospital where she got to experiece several fields of ursig though ad decided she prefers the high-paced atmosphere of the Emergecy Room ad Itesive Care Uits. Keeler realized others at NRHS may be iterested i ursig but uaware of their optios so for her seior project she developed a writte presetatio that explais the may opportuities her itership provided ad how it ca help studets i their career choices, too. It s a really good program where people ca explore all areas of the medical field ad I wated to help get the word out to the public so others ca take part i it, said Keeler. As aother factor i her project she created a brochure for the Carig Studet Itership that she looks to distribute at other area schools. The studets also had the added optio of submittig their projects for additioal Distictio awards where each year the public ad a pael of judges examie the submissios the vote for two studets to receive either a People s Choice Award or a Judge s Award for their hard work. Yeakel said the Seior Projects have become a very importat part of the fial learig experiece at NRHS. To see them thik ad come up with ideas for their project, the watch them blossom ad grow as it all comes together the evolutio is amazig, she said. Leather Swivel Bar Stool By Hacock & Moore Reg. JOSHUA SPAULDING Natalie Haskell comes up throwig at third base durig her team s game last week agaist Lacoia. Bears rally but come up just short Newfoud softball team edged by Lacoia BY JOSHUA SPAULDING Sports Editor BRISTOL Playig a team right aroud his squad i the Divisio III stadigs, Newfoud softball coach Corey Johsto kew there was a chace to pick up aother wi o Thursday, May 12, whe Lacoia came to tow. However, the Sachems took advatage of a couple of Newfoud errors i the first iig ad by the time the Bears came up i the fourth iig, they were trailig by a 12-0 score ad i dager of havig the game called by the mercy rule. But the Bears did t give up. They scored six rus i that fourth iig. They added aother i the fifth iig. Ad the they scored two i the seveth ad were chargig toward the tyig ru. However, the deficit was just a bit too much ad the Sachems got the 12-9 wi. I m proud of the girls for ot givig up, Johsto said. But if you spot a team five rus i the first iig you ca t expect to have a successful day. The first Sachem batter was hit by a pitch ad after a walk ad a ifield hit, a Newfoud error allowed two rus to cross the plate. A sacrifice grouder got the first out of the iig ad catcher Ashlee Dukette made a ice catch of a foul ball behid the plate for the secod out. However, a walk ad aother base hit made it 3-0 ad aother error allowed two more rus to score ad Lacoia had a 5-0 lead before pitcher Amada Johsto got the fial batter to pop to Natalie Haskell i foul territory at third base to ed the iig. Hayleigh LeToureau beat out a ifield hit with oe out i the first iig ad the stole secod, but she was straded there. Johsto gave up a base hit ad aother error put two Sachems o base i the top of the secod, but the Bear juior struck out the ext two batters to get out of the iig with o more rus. Newfoud wet dow i order i the bottom of the secod iig ad Lacoia added three i the third iig ad four more i the fourth iig to push the lead to 12-0 after three ad a half iigs, puttig the Bears dagerously close to the mercy rule. I the bottom of the fourth, LeToureau beat out aother ifield hit ad after she moved up o a groudout by Johsto, Ashlee Dukette worked a walk to put ruers o first ad secod. What followed was quite possibly oe of the stragest plays ayoe would see. Juliae Marchad lauched a fly ball that hit off the fece. LeToureau was betwee secod ad third to make sure it was t caught. However, Dukette was steamig aroud secod. As LeToureau headed toward third, Johsto yelled to Dukette to get back ad LeToureau thought the istructio was for her ad retreated. Meawhile Dukette came chargig toward third ad Marchad ra ito secod. The ball came ito the ifield ad somehow, with obody gettig tagged, LeToureau got back to third, Dukette got to secod ad Marchad back to first, with a log sigle. Mackezie Rya followed by reachig o a error to plate LeToureau ad Hailie Clarke worked a walk to plate aother ru. A pair of wild pitches allowed two more rus to score ad Victoria Roma reached o a error to drive i aother ru. Kylee MacDoald came up with a base hit ad it appeared that the iig was over whe LeToureau flied to left. However, the umpire called a illegal pitch after the Lacoia pitcher seemed to be tryig to swat away a swarm of black flies (which were a uisace throughout the game for everyoe). That allowed a ru to score ad allowed LeToureau aother chace ad she got a hit. However, she was straded ad the iig eded with Newfoud dow After addig aother i the fifth iig, Rya held strog i the pitcher s circle ad Newfoud got oe more crack at thigs i the seveth. Dukette led off the iig with a double ad oe out later, a base hit from Rya made it Clarke followed with a base hit ad Vicki Steele took over o the bases for her. Oe out later, Roma delivered a base hit to drive i aother ru but that was as close as the Bears would get, as the Lacoia got the fial out. We were oe hit away from tyig it, Johsto said. Hats off to them (Lacoia), they outplayed us today. The Bear coach said it seemed like his team did t really wake up util the third iig. It was like they were t ready util the third iig, Johsto said. We told them, just oe at a time. The Newfoud metor praised the work of Rya, who kept the Sachems off the board for the fial few iigs while the team battled back. Newfoud dropped a 15-3 decisio to Belmot o Tuesday, May 10. Rya started i the circle ad gave up six eared rus but Belmot capitalized o defesive mistakes. Rya, Clarke, MacDoald, Dukette ad Johsto each had a hit for the Bears ad Mac- Doald threw out two ruers at home from her positio i ceter field. Newfoud picked up its third wi of the seaso agaist Mascoma o Moday, May 9. The Bears scored five i the first, icludig a three-ru homer by Dukette, who fiished the day four-for-five with a double, a triple ad two homers. Phil Morris came o to pitch i the top of the third iig for the Bears ad after a pair of walks to ope the iig, the Sachems got a three-ru homer o to the hill i left field, pushig the lead to Morris walked the Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet What Ca Golf Teach You About Retiremet Plaig? If you re a golfer, you kow the joys (ad occasioal frustratios) of the game. But you might ot realize that some of the lessos you lear o the liks ca carry over to other areas of your life such as retiremet plaig. So whether you re already retired or are plaig to retire i the ext few years, cosider the followig suggestios: Try to overcome the yips. Whe you miss those short puts the oes you kow you should be makig you might be i the grip of your old fried, the yips. As you kow, it s ot always easy to shake this problem, but may golfers have beefited by workig to improve their cocetratio, especially by adherig to a strict pre-shot ad i-shot step-by-step routie. Whe ivestig for retiremet, or maagig their portfolios durig retiremet, may people ca get the ivestmet versio of the yips that is, they get ervous durig market dowturs, ad the they make mistakes, such as sellig quality ivestmets whe their price has dropped. (Remember the first rule of ivestig: Buy low ad ext batter but the got a strikeout. A base hit ad walk loaded the bases, but Morris iduced a double play to get the Bears out of the iig with o further damage. The Bears were able to get o the board i the bottom of the third iig. Jarrod Fairbak ad Ricky DeLuca both reached ad Miller followed with a three-ru homer, cuttig the lead to The two teams cotiued scoreless through the fourth iig ad Lacoia threateed i the top of the fifth iig. However, MacDoald, playig i right field, gued dow a Lacoia ruer tryig to score ad Miller struck out the ext two batters to get out of the iig with o damage doe. Thomas Rhatiga led off the bottom of the fifth iig with a walk ad stole secod. However, he was straded o base. Lacoia was able sell high.) To overcome this type of yips, the solutio is the same as for golf: Maitai your focus ad cocetrate o makig appropriate moves, such as buildig ad maitaiig a diversified portfolio that s suitable for your eeds, goals ad risk tolerace. Forget about that holei-oe. It s every golfer s dream: a hole-i-oe. Whe you tee up o that temptig par 3, ad you re feelig good, you might just wat to go for it but whe you do, you could ed up overshootig the gree or plukig ito the water. May ivestors also try for a hole-i-oe, i the form of pursuig that oe hot stock that s goig to make them rich. However, by the time they hear about such a stock (if it eve exists), it may have already cooled off ad, i ay case, it might ot be right for their eeds. Istead of lookig for that ultimate, oe-time wier, look for solid ivestmets that you d be comfortable holdig for the log term. Study the course. The more you kow about a course you re goig to play, the better off you will be. You ca pla the approaches you ll take o various holes ad thik to take advatage of a walk ad two hits to plate aother ru i the top of the sixth iig but Miller came back ad got a strikeout ad fly ball to left field to ed the iig. Nate Desrochers got a oe-out walk i the bottom of the sixth iig ad took secod o a wild pitch. However, the ext batter flew out to left ad a strikeout eded the game with Lacoia takig the mercy-rule shorteed game by a 13-3 score. The Bears opeed the week with a 9-5 loss to Mascoma ad also dropped a game to Belmot o Tuesday, May 10. The Bears will be at White Moutais o Moday, May 23, ad will be hostig Iter-Lakes o Wedesday, May 25, both at 4:30 p.m. Joshua Spauldig ca be reached at or sportsgs@salmopress.com. about how to avoid the sad, water ad rough. Whe plaig for your retiremet, or eve whe you re livig it, you also eed a strategy, oe that addresses questios such as these: How ca I structure my ivestmet mix to provide me with a log-term icome stream? How much should I withdraw from my portfolio each year? Whe should I start takig Social Security? Am I doig all I ca to cotrol ivestmetrelated taxes? Visualize. Cosider these words from World Golf Hall of Famer Nick Faldo: Visualizatio is the most powerful thig we have. If you ca visualize what you wat to do o each hole you play, you are well o your way toward a successful roud. The same idea holds true for retiremet plaig: If you ca evisio the type of retiremet lifestyle you wat, you ll be more likely to achieve it by stickig with appropriate fiacial ad ivestmet strategies. So, there you have them some ideas that play well o the golf course ad i the retiremet area. Put them to work soo. 20 B6 The grad DVR pla spoiled by power outage As I metioed at the ed of last week s colum, I am way behid o my televisio shows. I watch way too may shows ad with games every afteroo ad tos of writig to do, I rarely get home early eough to be watchig the shows I ejoy. Of course, Survivor is the oe exceptio, as I ever go to bed o a Wedesday ight without watchig that SPORTING CHANCE By JOSHUA SPAULDING ight s episode, sice I kow I will ed up spoiled if I do t see it. This week, I got home at a fairly decet hour o Friday ight ad was able to watch the seaso fiale of The Amazig Race before headig to bed, but be- yod that, I have multiple episodes of may of my shows backed up o my DVR. After headig out to Bristol o Saturday for the Bristol Lios Ivitatioal, I headed to Plymouth to do my grocery shoppig ad the spet some time i the office gettig some writig doe. My purpose i this was to avoid havig to write too much o Suday. I was able to get a few thigs doe before headig home ad I was able to watch last week s Saturday Night Live ad a episode of Scorpio, which was still backed up from about a moth ago. My grad pla was to sleep i a bit o Suday morig ad the sped a few hours cleaig out a few thigs from the DVR. I got up a bit after 8 a.m. (that was sleepig i for me) ad fiished up the fial two episodes of Scorpio, which was oe of my favorite ew shows of last seaso. I the started this week s editio of Saturday Night Live ad the, of course, the power wet out. Sice I could t get much doe at home with o power, I decided to head to the office ad hope that power was o there so I could get some work doe. Luckily, the power was still flowig i Wolfeboro, so I got a few stories writte ad a few thigs edited before the call came from Eversource that power had bee retured to the area. I headed home ad fiished off the SNL episode before headig to Dover for a little Five Guys. My love of Five Guys is well-documeted but I try to limit myself to oce a moth sice I kow it s ot the healthiest food i the world. Ad the Dover locatio ow has milkshakes, which is a added bous. I had oe with chocolate, baaa, peaut butter ad baco ad it was pretty dared good. The it was back to the office to cotiue to write ad get the orther papers off to the pagiatio departmet for their Moday morig deadlies. My hope was to be home fairly early o Suday (sice we did t have rehearsal for the Village Players summer productio), but that really was t happeig, as this is beig writte at 9:45 p.m. ad there s still more work to do. But, o the positive side, the shows are widig dow so there s a good chace ot may will be added to my DVR i the comig weeks. Fially, have a great day Ali ad Brett Cushig.
